  2. Hello BB and thank you for this very interesting compilation. I always wondered whether the Germans themselves easily accepted this name "Krautrock", Sauerkraut rock... I think it came from the English music press who wanted to make fun of the genre a little. Julian Cope, a scholar of the movement, said that krautrock was "a subjectively British fad" based on how the term emerged in the United Kingdom rather than the German music scene from which it arose... One day we talk about English “pudding pop” or American “burger rock" ?

    1. Hi Herve,
You're absolutely right! The term "Krautrock" did indeed originate from the English music press, and it was initially used somewhat pejoratively. However, over time, the term has been embraced by fans and musicians alike, and it has come to represent a unique and influential movement in music history.
The German musicians themselves were more focused on creating innovative and experimental sounds, often blending rock with electronic music, jazz, and avant-garde elements.
As for "pudding pop" or "burger rock," who knows? Maybe one day we'll see those terms catch on! Music genres often get quirky names, and it's all part of the fun and evolution of music culture.
      Cheers.

    2. As Hervé and BB both note the term is really quite imprecise: the British music press labeled music of all stripes - except pop music intended for the German charts - played by German bands and performers as "Krautrock." Thus it is rather misleading, as it lumped together a wide range of music that could hardly be more different from each other: straight rock (often w/lyrics in English), folk music (ALWAYS w/lyrics in German), jazz-inflected instrumentals, prog in all its varieties, and electronic experimentation with a remarkable and - in my view - unrivaled range of approaches and results. Explicitly political bands played next to those that avoided spelling out the political implications of charting new musical territory at a time of significant social and cultural change.

The present collection clearly intends to showcase the wide range of styles and approaches under the Krautrock umbrella (and does that rather well). In case anybody would like to explore the more experimental and "far out" bands further, BB has posted a very good collection that does just that called "Deutsche Elektronische Musik."

    3. Thanks for elaborating, albrecht koschnik .
I see what you mean. The term "Krautrock" indeed captures a broad spectrum of musical styles and approaches, making it somewhat of a catch-all label. The diversity within Krautrock—from straight rock to folk, jazz-inflected instrumentals, prog, and electronic experimentation—showcases the innovative spirit of German musicians during that era. The "Deutsche Elektronische Musik" collection is a fantastic resource, offering a deeper exploration into the genre's more avant-garde aspects. Additionally, the political and social context of the time significantly influenced these musicians, adding another layer of depth to their work. The blending of different genres and the willingness to explore new musical territories were not just artistic choices but also reflections of the broader cultural shifts occurring in Germany and beyond.
      Cheers.

  3. BB and Albrecht Koschnik, thank you very much for your details. Indeed, I had forgotten to mention that, moreover, the famous Krautrock is extremely varied in terms of musical genres. We go from the first Kraftwerk to Neu!, Can, Tangerine Dream or Dissidenten. The gap is very vast!
