HENRY COW

Henry Cow - Cow Box Redux (50th Anniversary Box) [2019] (17 x CDs)

Henry Cow were an English experimental rock group formed in Cambridge in 1968, active until 1978. Founded by Fred Frith and Chris Cutler, the band became known for a radical approach that blended rock, free improvisation, and contemporary composition. Rejecting conventional song structures, they emphasized collective authorship, complex ensemble writing, and musical exploration.

Closely associated with the Rock in Opposition movement, which they helped initiate, Henry Cow combined artistic ambition with a strong ideological stance against commercial constraints. Though their audience was limited during their lifetime, their influence has been lasting, and they are now regarded as one of the most uncompromising and innovative groups to emerge from British experimental music.

The Henry Cow Cow Box Redux Box was released by ReR Megacorp in late 2019 to coincide with the group’s fiftieth anniversary. The set gathers extensive studio and live material recorded between 1971 and 1978 across multiple discs, accompanied by detailed booklets and documentation that frame the band’s work as a unified and historically significant body. It revisits one of the most uncompromising catalogues to emerge from British experimental music, reframed as a unified body of work rather than a sequence of isolated releases. Henry Cow’s output has always resisted easy categorisation, sitting somewhere between rock, free improvisation, modern composition, and political statement. Presented in box form, the music gains a new sense of continuity, allowing the band’s restless intelligence and collective discipline to unfold over extended listening.

What becomes immediately apparent is the group’s commitment to structure within freedom. Even at their most abrasive or abstract, Henry Cow operate with intent. Themes recur, dissolve, and reappear in altered form, and the tension between composed material and open improvisation remains central throughout. Heard in this context, the music feels less confrontational than purposeful, demanding attention but rewarding it with depth and coherence.

Rather than flattening the material into a historical document, the track ordering allows shifts in approach to feel organic. Early recordings carry a raw urgency, while later material reveals increasing sophistication in ensemble interaction and compositional thinking. The transitions between studio pieces, live recordings, and improvisational passages highlight the band’s refusal to draw firm boundaries between formats or intentions.

The Redux presentation reinforces the sense of Henry Cow as a collective rather than a vehicle for individual expression. Multiple voices and ideas coexist, sometimes uneasily, but always in dialogue. This friction is part of the music’s character, reflecting a group more interested in process than polish. The material invites repeated listening, not for comfort, but for clarity, each return revealing new relationships between parts.

As a whole, The Henry Cow Box Redux functions as both archive and statement. It offers a way to engage with Henry Cow’s music on its own terms, patient, demanding, and intellectually charged. Exploration is essential here. The reward lies in giving the music time to unfold, allowing its complexity and conviction to emerge through sustained attention rather than immediate impact. (B)

Please thanks CPT. HATEMONGER for this great box set.

  1. Thanks for this BB - another jewel! Half a century down the line, I still find Henry Cow challenging. Imagine the shock to my teenage system I searched out the super-cool musicians playing with Mike Oldfield on the Old Grey Whistle Test (to this day, a superb performance) and was hit by an aural, artistic, avalanche the like of which I had never encountered. They educated my ears to be able to appreciate Faust and Magma. I always found odd the fact that Cambridge gave us Pink Floyd, Henry Cow, Nick Drake and The Soft Boys yet these never coalesced into a "scene" like Canterbury.

    1. Maybe it has to do with time frames, Drake passed away, Soft Boys came later on, and Pink Floyd went galactic after DSOTM and probably weren't very accessible after, neither for fans nor for other bands. Well spotted indeed, wonder if those bands themselves gave it any thought as to why there wasn't a scene.

  2. I had no idea who they were or what they played when I first encountered this band. I just saw a sock. What an album! I later found the other socks and even later realized that The Fall ended up covering a track from that third Sock. Had fun following the various members. Nice to see this put together. Thanks, Capt. Hatemonger!

  3. Thank you very much Capt. H. and BB. Dare I say highly recommended for fans of Gong? They blend well together on a playlist. The complete Callas, Henry Cow boxed... you're really spoiling us, BB (and Cpt., thanks again for the Ayler collection.).

  4. 17 CDs of Henry Cow, wow, man you might as well upload Bruce Hamptons output, Pere Ubu's stuff and Blacklight Braille's output in case anyone wants to drive their spouse out of the house.

    1. Viva Colonel Bruce Hampton! 'Music To Eat' will make the ladies swoon

    2. I don't know Bruce Hampton but I just snagged 'Music to Eat' and it looks pretty interesting. I have about half of Pere Ubu already, I could almost certainly root up the rest of their disco if y'all really want. It would be in the form of those box sets they released about a decade ago, but I doubt anyone here minds that too much.

  5. Thank you very much, what a great band that was. And these superb musicians went on to make a cathedral of music. And I concur with the anonymous above, Pere Ubu is also great to make an extra-large post about. I am going to research his other choices. P.S. my wife got me into this music in the first place. Keep up Captain, K, BB

  6. Pere Ubu is so cool! Saw them live in NYC back in the 90's when they got back together. So good live!
