MELLOW PSYCH
VA - Mellow Psych, A Soft Focus on the Psychedelic Drift (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)
Mellow Psych lives in that gentle space where the psychedelic impulse turns inward. Instead of fuzzed‑out guitars or kaleidoscopic overload, this set leans toward the softer end of the spectrum, drifting harmonies, warm textures, and a kind of introspective glow that sits just outside the everyday. Across these 4-CDs, private‑press gems sit comfortably beside sunshine‑psych deep cuts, all sharing lightly lysergic colours, melodic ease, and a sense of emotional weightlessness. These aren’t tracks for the dancefloor or the freak‑out, they’re for the quiet hours, when the world softens at the edges and everything feels a little out of phase.
You’ll hear the hallmarks of the style throughout: chiming guitars, hushed vocals, and arrangements that favour space over spectacle. Many of the rarities come from regional 45s and micro‑label LPs, young bands chasing the psychedelic moment with limited means but surprising sincerity. That’s part of the magic. The production may be modest, yet the ideas are vivid. Cuts like “The Phycle,” “Crystalize Your Mind,” and the more fragile folk‑psych moments carry that handmade quality collectors love, small‑run records capturing big, dreamy ambitions.
The first two discs trace the classic era, where melodic psychedelia and sunshine pop overlap in bright, buoyant ways. The third disc turns inward, drifting into pastoral, reflective, and occasionally haunted territory. The final disc widens the frame, showing how the mellow psychedelic impulse continued to evolve long after the sixties, still glowing, still drifting, still inviting.
What ties everything together is the emotional clarity. These tracks aren’t here to overwhelm; they’re here to invite you in. A soft‑focus journey through the quieter corners of psychedelia, rewarding close listening and late‑night immersion. (B)

Thanks Mike,
DeleteIt's a real pleasure to present my Compilations each Friday.
Glad you like it.
Cheers.
Well this one surely caught my attention and looks like an incredible compilation, B!
ReplyDeleteThere is so much for me to immediately like here... glad you went with at least 4 CD.
I'll comment on a few: That Peppermint Rainbow tune to me is one of the catchiest
little lesser played pop gems, the melodic breaks, drumming and girl harmonies are
exquisite! To me The Critters Mr. Dieingly Sad exists in some class by itself, it is so
mesmerizingly beautiful and well produced. The New Colony Six are acquaintances
and had around a half dozen memorable pop tunes like the one here which is a fine
example of how a producer's insight and some orchestration can make a song work.
Also, I want to acknowledge B, how much the "year" labeling adds to my experience.
I've been meaning to mention it again for a while now, it really helps. Thanks for this!
Hi mrRadio.
DeleteReally appreciate you taking the time to dive in so closely, that’s exactly the spirit I hope for.
The Peppermint Rainbow track is such a sweet little marvel, all those soft edges and bright harmonies working in perfect balance. And you’re right about The Critters - Mr. Dieingly Sad has a kind of suspended‑in‑air beauty that never quite leaves you. The New Colony Six note made me smile too. They always knew how to wrap a tune in just the right amount of shimmer.
Glad the year tags help shape the journey; they matter to me as well.
I am delighted this set offers that kind of evaluation.
Cheers.
Thanks! Although 'Desiree' is actually 'Sunshine' by Gun.
ReplyDeleteHi Sjm,
DeleteGood catch. Thanks for pointing that out.
I’ll update the listing so it’s correct. But for the moment I have added a link For the Track I should have used. Appreciate the sharp eye.
Cheers.
Thanks for catching and shaing this. I have only listened to CD1 so far...
DeleteCheers,
Mike M
I also appreciate that you including the year in meta data.

Τhank you ΒΒ for another walk through the colorful mental paths of the soul!
ReplyDeleteHi John,
DeleteAlways a pleasure to offer these softer, dream‑lit journeys.
These tracks drift like light through stained glass, each one colouring a different corner of the soul’s path. Thanks for walking it with me.
Cheers.
I'm lying in the sunshine...just outside my door...actually,no...it's a chilly, wet, breezy but occasionally sunny morning here in the Western Isles of Scotland. This set rules!
ReplyDeleteHi Montax,
DeleteThat sounds like the perfect setting for this one, a little sun, a little weather, and that wide‑open island air. These mellow psych tunes seem to glow even brighter against a grey sky. Glad the set found its place with you.
Cheers.
A perfect collection! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWe'll soon be marking Friday on our calendars as Uncle BB's gift day. Well done! It's impressive.
