VA - Halloween Nuggets, Monster Sixties a Go-Go [2014] (3 x CD's)

HALLOWWEEN

VA - Halloween Nuggets, Monster Sixties a Go-Go [2014] (3 x CD's)

An ambitious and lovingly compiled 3 CD box set for fans of obscure 60s vintage Halloween themed novelty rock 'n' roll. While the 98 tracks of this box set are mostly from the 60's in origin, there is a decent sampling of late 50's material as well. The set also contains audio from horror movie trailers or dialogue snippets.

Stellar audio on an incredible collection of rarities. Most tracks are from the 60's with some late 50's tracks appearing. Since production notes/credits are non-existent in this otherwise beautifully packaged set, I'll give kudos to listed compiler James Austin for a nice job in selection and sequencing the tracks. The only other credit listed in the package is Jerry Peterson who is responsible for the mastering. The audio is a sheer delight sounding clean but authentic. I've got other "rare" compilations that were mastered from original 45's and they sound like it (or sound compressed from some type of noise filtering process). The audio restoration on this set is phenomenal. Puts me in mind of the always incredible audio work done by ACE Records in Great Britain. Tracks appear in (original) stereo and mono mixes. There are 98 tracks in the collection with most of the three discs running each 70 minutes. Perfect companion for celebrating the Halloween Season!  Great for Halloween parties or everyday rush and ghoul, you will scream and shriek at the content. Rare movie trailers, and 45 B-sides! Can't go wrong, get this before it becomes history. (Amazon)

Not just for Halloween music. Great obscure as heck tracks! This should be a must have box set for anyone who likes garage music from the 1960’s. Has more obscure tracks than most boring Halloween compilation sets. It’s crazy fun!

VA - Sounds of the Seventies [1990-1991] Take Two (10 x CD's)

SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES

VA - Sounds of the Seventies [1990-1991]  Take Two (10 x CD's)

"Sounds of the Seventies" was first issued in the summer of 1989, with the first album covering 1970. and again in early-to-mid 1990s, spotlighting pop music of the 1970s. As was the case with Time-Life's other series, "Sounds of the Seventies" was advertised in television and magazine advertisements. The series was available by subscription; those who purchased the series in that fashion received a new volume roughly every other month (on the format of their choice), and had the option of keeping the volumes they wanted. Each volume was also offered for individual sale. When the series was fully issued, a customer could purchase the entire series at once (or a group of albums, as packaged by Time-Life as part of a promotion), often at a discounted price. Much like Time-Life's other series chronicling popular music, volumes in the "Sounds of the Seventies" series covered a specific time period, including individual years in some volumes, and different parts of the decade (for instance, the early 1970s) in others; in addition, some volumes covered specific trends, such as music popular on album-oriented rock stations on the FM band. Each volume was issued on either compact disc, cassette or vinyl record. Individual volumes generally contained anywhere between 18 and 22 tracks, and represented the highlighted time period's most popular and noteworthy tracks. Also included was a booklet, containing liner notes written by some of the most respected historians of the genre, photographs of the artists, and information on the songs (writers, performers and peak position on Billboard magazine's Billboard Hot 100 chart).  (Wikipedia)

VA - Sounds of the Seventies Take Two follows on from VA - Sounds of the Seventies [1989]. Enjoy!

PSYCHEDELIC ROCK

VA - Electric Sound Show (An Assortment Of Antiquities For The Psychedelic Connoisseur) [2011] (5 x CD's)

Electric Sound Show is the official off-shoot CD compilation series that follows the long-deleted, vinyl-only compilation LP series, Incredible Sound Show Stories originally issued back in 1995 by Dig the Fuzz records. Particles presents for the first time ever, all five volumes as originally intended, providing a colorful voyage through the handsome and flamboyant heavens of psychedelia. Numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies only. This exclusive boxset provides complete and professional mastering with expansive and analytical liner notes from Psychomaniac, promising a wealth of archival material housed in a 56-page color booklet.  Collectors will be pleased to hear these 121 rare popsike tracks on CD.

In the last few years there have been a flurry of CD box set releases of old psych vinyl collections. More than any other though, this compiles global psych, mostly from Europe and Australia, with the UK and US contributions, and a great selection the compilers have made. If you never had the LPs, you will be amazed at the quality of the international material, some really trippy dreamy tracks that sum up psychedelia perfectly. I'd compare this to the Perfumed Garden in musical quality, just that as I said, it doesn't focus only on the British psych scene but extends to the globe, and with surprisingly good results. Jack Bruce - Can You Follow [2008] (6 x CDs)

JACK BRUCE

Jack Bruce - Can You Follow [2008] (6 x CDs)

2008 six CD box, a career retrospective from the legendary Rock musician. One of Britain's greatest popular musicians, Jack has spent 50 years as a professional musician. Aside from his work with Cream, Jack has collaborated with numerous artists with a stubborn refusal to compromise his music, be it working in the worlds of Jazz, Blues, Rock or ethnic music. Compiled with the full involvement of Jack, Can You Follow is the most comprehensive celebration of Jack's musical achievements ever, drawing on his many fine solo albums and more. The set also includes 14 tracks by Cream (including previously unreleased mono mixes) and Jacks' collaborations with Blues Incorporated, Graham Bond Organization, John Mayall, Manfred Man, Frank Zappa, BBM and much more. Housed in a deluxe set with a 68-page booklet with an exclusive interview and many unpublished photos.

What a great set of music from one of Scotland's finest. From the earliest recordings on this set (1962) to the latest (2003), you get a nice sampling of Jack Bruces' varied tastes. The man never sits still. Never repeats himself. Few "rock" musicians have diversified themselves as much as Jack has over the years. To me, one of the most amazing things about his career, is how much he was involved in bands that changed peoples thinking about music. Coming from a jazz background, he introduced jazz to rock via Cream's legendary improvisational jamming. Then he turns around and through the Tony Williams Lifetime introduces rock to jazz. And never receives the credit for it. This set touches upon all of this. A wonderful overview of an amazing career. (Amazon)

Jack Bruce is a true musician. He has never seemed to be concerned with fame and fortune. Maybe the success of Cream allowed him to be the eclectic musician. Or maybe he is just a true musician, more interested in the journey than the destination. This box set seems to prove that he follows his muse and remains just as fresh now as in the 60s.

VA - Motown Greatest Hits [2019] (3 x CD's)

The 60th anniversary celebrations of Motown Records ccontinue with the release of a brand new Greatest Hits collection. Appropriately, it  features 60 tracks from the company’s culture-shaping history and is available in 3CD and digital formats. There is also be a 2LP edition with a shorter track listing. This new retrospective of perhaps the most famous and best-loved record label in all music includes many of the songs and artists that made Motown world-famous. The 3CD and digital versions opens with the company’s first nationwide hit, Barrett Strong’s ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’ and takes in other early successes such as the Miracles’ ‘Shop Around’ and the Marvelettes’ ‘Please Mr. Postman.’  Other featured stars included are Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Temptations, Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, the Jackson 5 and Lionel Richie. Also represented from more recent chapters of Motown history are such artists as Rick James, Mary Jane Girls, Rockwell and Shanice. The album complements the multitude of other activities surrounding the 60th anniversary of the company founded by Berry Gordy on 12 January 1959.
