This five‑disc set continues the story Terry Farley began with Acid Rain, moving deeper into the catalogue of acid house and early deep house released between 1985 and 1991. Where the first volume traced the rise of the sound through club‑driven twelve‑inches and raw Chicago cuts, Acid Thunder widens the frame, bringing in tracks that show how the style evolved once it spread to Europe and the UK. The sequencing reflects that shift, moving from stripped‑down drum‑machine workouts to more atmospheric pieces shaped by emerging studio techniques and a growing sense of what the dancefloor could hold.

The early discs lean heavily on Chicago and Midwest material, with producers working from minimal setups and pushing the 303 into new shapes. The tracks have the immediacy of small studios and fast turnarounds, built on repetition, tension, and the kind of basslines that defined the era. As the set progresses, the sound broadens. The Human League began in Sheffield in 1977, formed by Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh and Adi Newton, originally called 'The Future, as an experimental electronic unit shaped by the city’s post‑industrial atmosphere and the possibilities opened by affordable synthesizers. Philip Oakey joined in 1978, bringing a distinctive baritone voice and a sense of melodic direction that helped the group move beyond the avant‑garde edges of early British synth music. Their first releases on Fast Product and Virgin captured a band still rooted in cold electronics and stark imagery, but already searching for a more accessible form.

By 1980 the group split, with Ware and Marsh departing to form Heaven 17. Oakey, suddenly left with the name and the contract, rebuilt the band with visual flair and pop instincts. He recruited teenage vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley, reshaped the sound with producer Martin Rushent, and steered the Human League into a new era. The transformation was dramatic: from the icy minimalism of Reproduction and Travelogue to the sleek, modern pop of Dare! in 1981. That album became a landmark of the decade, turning the band into international stars and defining the sound of British synthpop.

Across the following decades the Human League continued to evolve. They navigated the polished dance‑pop of the mid‑1980s, the American‑leaning production of Crash, the darker introspection of Romantic?, and the late‑career reinventions of Octopus, Secrets, and Credo. Through every shift, Oakey, Catherall, and Sulley remained the core, a rare continuity in a genre often marked by short lifespans.

The Human League’s catalogue is unusually broad for an electronic group. Early work such as Peel Session, Reproduction, and Travelogue shows a band fascinated by texture, repetition, and machine rhythm. These records sit comfortably alongside Cabaret Voltaire and early OMD, capturing the moment when British synth music was still closer to art‑school experimentation than to pop charts.

With Dare! the band achieved something few electronic acts had managed: they made synthesizer‑based music feel warm, stylish, and emotionally direct. Tracks like “The Sound of the Crowd,” “Love Action,” and “Don’t You Want Me” demonstrated that pop could be built entirely from circuitry without losing human presence. Love and Dancing pushed this further, offering one of the earliest remix albums to treat the studio as an instrument rather than a place for extended edits.

The mid‑1980s albums, Fascination, Hysteria, and Crash, show a group adapting to changing production values while maintaining their melodic identity. Romantic? and Octopus brought a return to sharper songwriting, while Secrets remains a fan‑favourite for its blend of icy electronics and modern sequencing. Later compilations such as A Very British Synthesizer Group and the 2023 sets reaffirm the band’s long arc and the durability of their sound.

Their appeal lies in the balance between cool surfaces and emotional clarity. Oakey’s voice carries a mixture of detachment and vulnerability, while Catherall and Sulley provide contrast, lightness, and a sense of shared perspective. The Human League were never just a frontman with backing singers; they were a trio whose interplay defined the band’s identity.

The Human League are important because they helped establish the vocabulary of synthpop. They proved that electronic music could be chart‑friendly without losing its edge, that image and sound could be integrated without artifice, and that a band built on machines could still feel unmistakably human. Their influence runs through modern pop, electronic dance music, and the continuing revival of 1980s aesthetics. Few groups have bridged underground experimentation and mainstream success with such clarity or longevity. (B)

This collection gathers twenty‑four recordings shaped by the songwriting partnership of Isaac Hayes and David Porter, tracing how their work moved through the Stax family of labels and into wider territory during the 1960s and early 1970s. The sequence begins with Homer Banks’ “60 Minutes of Your Love,” arranged by Gene “Bowlegs” Miller, and sets the tone for a set built around strong grooves, clear structures, and the direct emotional writing that defined the pair’s catalogue. The Emotions, Rachel Sweet, Freddie King, and Peter Frampton appear early, each bringing a different studio sound to the material.

Familiar titles sit alongside less‑traveled pieces. “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” “Soul Man,” and “When Something Is Wrong with My Baby” are represented through versions by The Righteous Brothers, Sam & Dave, and Otis Redding with Carla Thomas.
