Scared to Get Happy: A Story of Indie-Pop 1980–1989 is the first box set ever to document the explosion of Indie Pop in Britain across the 1980's.  It features 134 songs from indie pop artists from the 1980s. It was released in June 2013 by Cherry Red Records. Cherry Red Records explained the album is inspired by Lenny Kaye's album Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965–1968.

A truly remarkable, must-have 6 ½ hour, 5 cd box set with134 British indie-pop artists from the 80's. Comes in a 5 ½" x 7 ½" box that looks & opens like a hardcover book w/a 56-page non-removable booklet. The sound is overall excellent and recorded at a very even level (for those of you who like to make your own playlists).  Lots of influences heard, from The Smiths & Echo & Bunnymen to ska to jangle-pop, sunshine-pop & power-pop, with even a bit of garage rock.  Focusing exclusively on British artists and evoking a particular time and place in musical history, it endeavors to tell a story rather than be a definitive guide. The common thread between these songs on Scared To Get Happy is a willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of traditional pop. The compilation takes from the best of the indie labels at the time, with healthy doses of music from Postcard, Sarah, Cherry Red, Rough Trade, Creation, NME’s mail-order C86 cassette series, etc. The artist lineup can at times feel like a roll call of familiar indie-pop touchstones. Even the ones that aren't so amazing, particularly the more oddball songs are great period pieces. But most of the tunes are seriously choice.  It was the stuff I hadn't known that made this comp what it was for me. (Amazon)

Named after a lyric from Magazine’s ground-breaking hit, ‘Shot By Both Sides’, TO THE OUTSIDE OF EVERYTHING tells a musical story of how the UK’s post-punk scene evolved from the spirit of 1977 and the arrival of key labels such as Fast, Rough Trade, Zoo, Factory and Cherry Red.

This box set starts in in 1977 and takes you up to 1981 that still after 40 years of being a big fan sounds stupid! What was going on in the UK starting in 1977 was actually happening a few years earlier but prior to 1977 it was called GARAGE/ACID ROCK, anyway by 1977 there was so much going on in the UK outside of the damned and sex pistols there was just really no name to put on it, PUNK was the year in 1977 UK but there were a lot of other things happening as by 1977 I think many fans where getting tired of the prog rock situation that had dominated starting around 1968/69 as well as blues hard rock. I was time for something new and Punk was it but you also got a lot of other experimental bands coming along and the times were starting to change not just in the UK but New York, LA, Amsterdam & Stockholm, as I have many 45s and great punk or as they call it post punk records from that era. Regardless this great remastered cd box set sounds fantastic and gives you 5 discs of great Punk & Experimental rock bands that started in 1977 in the UK, there is so much great timeless music here and a wonderful book to go with this set. John Lee Hooker, master bluesman and undisputed father of boogie, recorded for more than 30 labels over a span of 50 years. Amazingly, he has never had a definitive career box set, until now. Hooker is an 84-track, 4CD set that culls material from all eras of his lengthy career, produced in conjunction with his estate to serve as the definitive tribute to his legacy.

There's perfect symmetry in the way this four-disc anthology opens with a raw, solo acoustic 1948 rendition of John Lee Hooker's signature tune, "Boogie Chillen'," and then closes a half-century later with Eric Clapton teaming with Hooker on the same tune. Though the Mississippi bluesman who relocated to Detroit has been justly celebrated for his spellbinding repetitions and primal incantations, this comprehensive set shows just how much more range and depth there was to Hooker's music than basic boogie. Beyond the influential hits--"Dimples," "Boom Boom," and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" among them--the set shows his music touching on everything from religion ("Moses Smote the Water," "We're All God's Chillen") to sociopolitical commentary ("Democrat Man," "King of the World"). Even so, sensual pleasure remained his prime inspiration, and few bluesmen have made sex and liquor sound as sexy and intoxicating as Hooker did. Included are selections from his career revivals spurred by disciples (1970's teaming with Canned Heat, 1989's Grammy-winning collaborations with Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, and others), but the most powerful Hooker is the earlier stuff that cuts closest to the bone. It may be surprising that it has taken Hooker this long to be memorialized with a comprehensive box set, but when you consider how many labels he recorded for (almost all of which he outlived) and under how many different names (Texas Slim, Johnny Williams, et al.), it?s quite an achievement that this set even exists.
