Wah-wah (or wa-wa) is an imitative word (or onomatopoeia) for the sound of altering the resonance of musical notes to extend expressiveness, sounding much like a human voice saying the syllable wah. The wah-wah effect is a spectral glide, a "modification of the vowel quality of a tone. The effect's "wa-wa" sound was noted by jazz player Barney Bigard when he heard Tricky Sam Nanton use the effect on his trombone in the early 1920's

A wah-wah pedal is a type of electric guitar effects pedal that alters the tone and frequencies of the guitar signal to create a distinctive sound, mimicking the human voice saying the onomatopoeic name "wah-wah". The pedal sweeps the peak response of a frequency filter up and down in frequency to create the sound, a spectral glide, also known as "the wah effect".  The effect's "wa-wa" sound was noted by jazz player Barney Bigard when he heard Tricky Sam Nanton use the effect on his trombone in the early 1920's, finding they could produce an expressive crying tone by moving a mute in and out of the instrument's bell. This was later simulated with electronic circuitry for the electric guitar when the wah-wah pedal was invented. It is controlled by movement of the player's foot on a rocking pedal connected to a potentiometer. Wah-wah effects are used when a guitarist is soloing, or creating a "wacka-wacka" funk-styled rhythm for rhythm guitar playing. (Wikipedia)

VA - Pioneers Of The Electric Guitar [2013] (3 x CD's)

75 tracks of sweet electric guitar. You should digest this one disc at a time to really appreciate this stuff. I would also say that one of the strengths here is the great variety, but it can also be a weakness depending on your interests. If you have no problem with a collection that goes from jazz to blues to rock from one song to another this is a no-brainer, but some people don't like that much variety. All I can say is if you like well-played electric guitar regardless of genre, this is a great set and there is likely something here you have not heard before. For this price, you can't beat this.

An absolute gem of a collection. It covers nearly all styles from Jazz to Western Swing, Blues to rock and roll and a whole smorgasbord in between. Listened to it all on a journey from Norfolk to Devon and never became bored. Obviously, some tracks are well known and available widely elsewhere. However, there are many obscure gems and half-remembered delights. If nothing else, it will broaden your horizons. A thoroughly enjoyable and recommended collection. (Amazon)

By 1965, the British R&B boom was over. Cyril Davies was dead, Alexis Korner was employed as MD on a children's TV show, and the legion of young acolytes the two men had inspired had drifted away from the blues and into mainstream pop stardom. The more "purist" individuals were out in the cold: Brian Jones was marginalized in the Stones by the emergence of the Jagger/Richards songwriting team, while Eric Clapton had stormed out of the most blues wailing Yardbirds in protest at their recording of winsome pop ditty 'For Your Love'. But things were about to change. In April 1966, club band John Mayall's Blues Breakers - prominently featuring a still-simmering Clapton - recorded their debut studio album with the aid of producer Mike Vernon. Released in July, the LP was a huge, entirely unexpected success, reaching the UK Top Ten and remaining in the charts for an impressive 17 weeks. Suddenly, an astonishing number of virtuoso young British (and Irish) blues guitarists, all of whom rejected the trappings of pop success as fervently as the young Eric, were inspired to form their own bands. In the wake of Clapton, his Yardbirds replacement Jeff Beck and Peter Green (Eric's replacement in Mayall's band after he'd split to form Cream) came the likes of Kim Simmonds, Jeremy Spencer, Stan Webb, Paul Kossoff, Alvin Lee, Clem Clempson, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore and Mick Ronson. Within a year or two of Mayall's unexpected breakthroughs, the second wave of the British blues boom was in full, glorious bloom. Featuring all of the above names, Crawling Up A Hill chronicles the development of the British blues scene during that relatively brief but halcyon period, covering both the electric blues bands (Mayall's Blues Breakers, Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown, Ten Years After etc) and the acoustic country blues acts (Jo-Ann Kelly, Mike Cooper, Ian A. Anderson and others). In addition, we feature a number of more obscure bands from the era, including Levee Camp Moan (responsible for two of the most feverishly collected albums of the era), pre-Faces outfit Quiet Melon and The Zany Woodruff Operation, now receiving their first-ever public exposure. Like the late 60's that had just come to a shuddering close, 1970 was a confusing time for music in the U.K. (and everywhere else too). Psychedelia was fading out, bubblegum was on its last bounce, prog was getting fired up, and bands were getting heavier, moving to the country, and searching for mellow vibes. An expansive overview of the year would make for some very eclectic listening; the Grapefruit label chose to narrow the scope down just a bit on their three-disc collection New Moon's in the Sky: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1970. The bands they chose were operating on the fringes of the pop scene; some of them were old hands like Honeybus, the Marmalade, and the Hollies, some were superstars caught on the rise (the Sweet), and the large majority of them were lost to the sands of time. Check names like Rusty Harness, Hard Meat, Ancient Grease, or She Trinity, and if you remember them, you were probably a member. Some of these obscure groups provide highlights: Stray's "Around the World in Eighty Days" is rambling, post-Byrds psych-pop; the Seychelles' "I Will Be There" is a fun mashup of swinging '60s pop and easy listening vocal harmonies; Affinity's tender Brit-folk ballad "United States of Mind" is one of the few songs with a female vocalist; Bachdenkel deliver an amazing proto-metal fantasy rocker with some truly fiery guitar leads on "An Appointment with the Mater"; and Putney Bridge come through with a grown-up stick of bubblegum on the singsong "What's It All About." Along with these lost gems are fun songs by bands on the cusp of prog but not quite there yet (Barclay James Harvest's rollicking "Good Love Child"), settling into their denim-clad role in life (Status Quo's "Shy Fly"), dipping into metal by way of some evil psych-blues (UFO's "Treacle People"), or getting ready to launch into space (Hawkwind's folky "Hurry on Sundown"). Overall, the songs chosen for the set show that there was a healthy bit of experimentation and freedom in the air and everyone here took a deep breath. If a band wanted to make music that sounded like an elevator ride to the moon soundtracked by the Beach Boys -- Harmony Grass' "I've Seen to Dream" -- they went for it. If they thought slapping some unhinged Syd Barrett-style guitar freak-out on a grooving country-rocker worked -- Kevin Ayers & the Whole World's "Singing a Song in the Morning" -- they let it rip. It makes for an extremely fun collection of musical weirdness that's tied together by a strong pop sensibility. No matter how weird the song, these groups still thought they had a chance at a hit. Of course, there are no hits here, but the collection itself is a smash. A few decades too late for the bands, yet just in time for lovers of oddball pop, off-kilter productions, and stylistic leaps of faith. (AllMusic Review by Tim Sendra)

To be honest, they had me when I saw the third and final disc concludes with Bill Oddie's immaculate reworking of "On Ilkla' Moor Baht' At" in the style of Joe Cocker's "WIth A Little Help From My Friends", which I hadn't heard since the much-missed "Walters' Weekly" was on Radio 1 in the early 80's.

Do you remember what it felt like to be a teenager in the early 1960's? It was a wildly exciting time because everything seemed so new, especially the terrific music I heard on the radio and at the record shop. The music, like my life, was exuberant and positive. For me, the only thing that mattered was, did I like it? Did I feel it? And when I did, I wanted to hear it over and over, sometimes hundreds of times.  Rock and roll was young and innocent like I was, but it was going through its adolescence too. In a mere year or two the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and dozens of other British stars would change the feel of music forever. Yes, the early 60's was my favorite period in pop music.

As America transitioned from the Eisenhower era to the world of Camelot, artists such as Gene Pitney, Brian Hyland, Brenda Lee and Jay & The Americans were just getting started! Chart mainstays like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Bobby Darin and Paul Anka were riding high, and newcomers like Tony Orlando and Glen Campbell launched chart careers that would ultimately transcend the decade and extend well into the 1970s.  Sue Thompson, Anita Bryant, Bobby Rydell and Johnny Tillotson were at their hit-making zenith while stars like Pat Boone and Steve Lawrence made swan-song appearances. It was a fascinating period of diverse rock, pop, R&B, country and folk hits, and even some crazy novelties, all on the charts together. Sit back, strap in and get ready to enjoy a nearly 4-hour musical ride that can only be called "AMAZING!"

Why "amazing," you ask? First, this imported box of three CDs truly contains the most interesting songs you're ever likely to hear in such a set. Because we're collectors, we created everything in this box for other collectors. Even though 80 of the 88 songs here were Top 40 hits, most of them aren't the obvious tracks you'll find on other such collections. And because collectors appreciate top sound quality, we assigned two of the best sound engineers anywhere to the project. Stunning. Great recording of mostly live Dead tracks throughout their history.  I am totally captivated by this recording, or rather obsessed, in a way that only a handful of records have impacted me throughout my life. Now that I have been exposed, I am racing through the rest of their back catalog, to find what else I may have been missing. I have found plenty else that I love there, for sure, but I keep coming back to this three CD set, so many of these songs and these versions seem to be unsurpassed, and I am in bliss listening to it.  (Amazon)

 Amir Bar-Lev's winding, thorough Grateful Dead documentary is naturally titled Long Strange Trip, really, what else could it have been called?  - and it's only appropriate that its accompanying soundtrack also follows a twisting road. The album tells a familiar tale, sometimes with familiar material, but it doesn't quite proceed in a predictable fashion. Like the film, the Long Strange Trip soundtrack skips entire portions of the Dead's history because it focuses on the bigger picture. Some eras are soft-peddled and some classic songs are missing but by threading in studio cuts with the live tracks, this gives a good idea of everything the Grateful Dead did and why they matter. Which isn't to say that Long Strange Trip is definitive -- any collection lacking "Truckin'," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Casey Jones" can't be called definitive -- but it does wind up as an excellent introduction to the Dead's eccentric charms, illustrating not just their instinct for exploration (with its heavy dose of '70s live material, the first disc offers ample proof of this) but also how they could groove on-stage (the cuts from the legendary Cornell concert from 1977). Then, it also proves that beyond those improvisations, the Dead have a strong song catalog that withstands all their revisions -- and the sometimes indifferent studio productions, none of which can be heard here  and the fact that this soundtrack shows both sides of the Grateful Dead makes it valuable indeed.
