A series of anthologies covering the genesis of soul music. Soul is so often subdivided into sub-genres, from the 'downhome' southern to the Eurocentric and retrospective northern, from 70's sweet to 90's urban, that we might well ask: what is soul and what is its relationship with other genres? This series will tell the story of individual artists and will trace connections between the musical genres and styles that went into soul and those that soul influenced in its turn, in a comprehensive overview from 1927 onwards.
The first 10 CD's which traces the history of soul music from its earliest antecedents in 1927 right up to the first true soul records released in 1962 and are followed up with a 4 CD box set "A Soul Chronology Live! The Sixties" This Soul Chronology differs from almost every other soul selection in that all the tracks on it are taken from live performances rather than vinyl sources. These sounds are both more immediate and more personal than the records that may well be more familiar to listeners. If you want to know just how good the soul musicians and singers in the 60's really were, you maybe amazed but you certainly won’t be disappointed!
There are a lot of poor quality 'out of copyright compilations out there but not here on these. You'll find stuff on here that you won't find elsewhere. Plus the comps are all put together with a real eye for detail. The only thing I'd change is the notes (which are great) should follow the track listings rather than be jumbled all over the place. These are great comps. (Amazon)
These compilations are fantastic. Mixture of Gospel and R & B that are the true roots of soul and even pop music.
