Jethro Tull - Gift of Roses, Underrated Jethro Tull (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3 REPOST

JETHRO TULL

Jethro Tull - Gift of Roses, Underrated Jethro Tull (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3       REPOST

Jethro Tull are a British rock band formed in Blackpool, Lancashire, in 1967. Initially playing blues rock and jazz fusion, the band later developed their sound to incorporate elements of hard rock and folk to forge a progressive rock signature. The band is led by vocalist/flautist/guitarist Ian Anderson, and has featured a revolving door of lineups through the years including significant members such as guitarists Mick Abrahams and Martin Barre, keyboardists John Evan and Dee Palmer, drummers Clive Bunker, Barriemore Barlow, and Doane Perry, and bassists Glenn Cornick, Jeffrey Hammond, John Glascock, and Dave Pegg.

The group first achieved commercial success in 1969, with the folk-tinged electric blues album Stand Up, which reached No. 1 in the UK, and they toured regularly in the UK and the US. Their musical style shifted in the direction of progressive rock with the albums Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972) and A Passion Play (1973), and shifted again to hard rock mixed with folk rock with Songs from the Wood (1977) and Heavy Horses (1978). After an excursion into electronic rock in the early-to-mid 1980s, the band won its sole Grammy Award with the 1987 album Crest of a Knave. Jethro Tull have sold an estimated 60 million albums worldwide, with 11 gold and five platinum albums among them. They have been described by Rolling Stone as "one of the most commercially successful and eccentric progressive rock bands".

Jethro Tull have always been an interesting and complex band. The classic Tull music is progressive rock, flute, rapid changes of cadence, acoustic guitar, rock guitar and vocals, at once loud and happy and mischievous, then soft with a threatening undercurrent. The unique and rewarding music of Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull have been recording and performing (with varying degrees of success!) over the past almost 40 years. Ian Anderson's songs and arrangements were always irreverent, iconoclastic, and innovative . I especially like the way he uses the combination of classical instruments, and juxtaposes them with rip-roaring rock instruments like drums, basses, and virtuoso electric guitar work. I love this band and never seem to get tired of listening to them. One of the most unique and individual styles in rock history. They've played in so many genres that they completely defy categorization.  (Wikipedia)

I love the sound of Jethro Tull and always find their music rewarding. You can pick up any of their albums and find something great to listen to. Here are 76 Tracks that  I consider underrated tracks. Enjoy!

K SPECIAL PART 4 of 12 VA - The Official UK Top 50 Singles Chart: 01 April 1973 - 07 April 1973 (50th Anniversary 2023 Remastered Expanded Edition) [1973] (3 x CDs)

K SPECIAL PART 4 of 12

VA - The Official UK Top 50 Singles Chart: 01 April 1973 - 07 April 1973 (50th Anniversary 2023 Remastered Expanded Edition) [1973] (3 x CDs)

1973 was a stellar year for music, particularly in the UK where so many great singles were released, and a perfect opportunity to celebrate 50 years since so many legendary songs graced the charts. Acts like David Bowie, Gary Glitter, the Sweet, Slade, the Carpenters and Wizzard would have the best chart years of their careers. Teenybop stuff was alive and well with David Cassidy and The Osmonds peaking. Plus, lots of new acts like Mud, David Essex, Suzi Quatro, Medicine Head and, erm, Barry Blue came through. Tony Orlando and Dawn had the best-selling single of 1973 with "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree", which spent four weeks at the top spot and lasted 11 weeks in the top 10. Slade became the first act to have three singles enter the UK charts at number-one; "Cum On Feel the Noize", "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me", and "Merry Xmas Everybody" (which also became the year's Christmas number-one single).

The glam-rock group had two further singles in the UK top 10 this year. They also reached number two in October with their single "My Friend Stan". They had five entries in total this year but this included "Gudbuy T'Jane" from the latter part of 1972. Another glam-rock band who made it big in 1973 was Wizzard, fronted by Roy Wood. Wood had previously achieved chart success a member of both The Move and Electric Light Orchestra. Wizzard scored four top 10 singles during the year, which included the number-one hits "See My Baby Jive" and "Angel Fingers", as well as their Christmas classic "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday", which peaked at number four for four consecutive weeks.  10cc achieved the first of their three UK number-one singles in June of this year with "Rubber Bullets", which spent one week at the top spot. They also reached number ten in September with "The Dean and I".

One-hundred and twenty-eight singles were in the top ten in 1973. Eight singles from 1972 remained in the top 10 for several weeks at the beginning of the year, while "The Show Must Go On" by Leo Sayer and "You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me" by The New Seekers featuring Lyn Paul were both released in 1973 but did not reach their peak until 1974. "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues, "Shotgun Wedding" by Roy C and "Solid Gold Easy Action" by T. Rex were the singles from 1972 to reach their peak in 1973. Twenty-nine artists scored multiple entries in the top 10 in 1973. David Essex, Leo Sayer, Marie Osmond, Mud and Wizzard were among the many artists who achieved their first UK charting top 10 single in 1973.   The 1972 Christmas number-one, "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" by Little Jimmy Osmond, remained at number-one for the first three weeks of 1973. The first new number-one single of the year was "Block Buster!" by The Sweet. Overall, seventeen different singles peaked at number-one in 1973, with Slade (3) having the most singles hit that position.

Twenty-nine artists scored multiple entries in the top 10 in 1973. Donny Osmond secured the record for most top 10 hits in 1973 with six hit singles. He scored three top 10 entries in 1973 as a solo artist, with "The Twelfth of Never" and "Young Love" both reaching number-one, and "When I Fall in Love" peaking at number four in November. His sister Marie made her top 10 debut in November with the number two hit "Paper Roses". Donny's total was boosted to six by his participation on The Osmonds recordings. The family group scored two top 10 entries in 1973 with "Going Home", which peaked at number four in July and "Let Me In", which peaked at number two in November. Their number two hit from November 1972, "Crazy Horses", remained in the top 10 for the first three weeks of 1973.   David Bowie peaked in the top 10 with five singles in 1973. He reached number two in January with "The Jean Genie", while "Drive In Saturday", "Life on Mars" and "Sorrow" all peaked at number three.  His single "The Laughing Gnome", originally released in 1967, also entered the top 10, reaching number six in October. Little Jimmy Osmond had two individual entries, including "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" from 1972 and his  number four single "Tweedle Dee" in April, as well as being a part of The Osmonds collective. David Cassidy and Gary Glitter scored four top 10 entries in 1973. The Partridge Family singer David Cassidy had two hit singles as part of the group - "Looking Through the Eyes of Love" at number nine and "Walking in the Rain" peaking at number ten - as well as the number one hit "Daydreamer"/"The Puppy Song", and "I am a Clown"/"Some Kind of a Summer" which reached number three. Gary Glitter's first two entries, "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" and "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again", both peaked at number two, while The remaining two, "I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)" and "I Love You Love Me Love", both spent four weeks at number-one.

Solo artists Suzi Quatro, Barry Blue and David Essex all made their top 10 debut in 1973, and all three scored a second entry later in the year. Suzi Quatro made her top 10 debut in May with "Can the Can", which spent a week at number-one in June, while "48 Crash" peaked at number three in August. Barry Blue made his top 10 debut in August with "Dancing on a Saturday Night", which peaked at number two, while "Do You Wanna Dance" reached number seven in November. David Essex made his top 10 debut in September with "Rock On", which peaked at number three, while "Lamplight" reached number seven in December. The Sweet had three top-ten entries, among these chart-topper "Block Buster!". The other artists with three top 10 singles were 10cc, Elton John, Paul McCartney, T. Rex and Wings.  Gilbert O'Sullivan was one of a number of artists with two top-ten entries, including the number-one single "Get Down". Alice Cooper, The Carpenters, The Partridge Family, Rod Stewart, Roxy Music and Status Quo were among the other artists who had multiple top 10 entries in 1973.

Here is the fourth part of my month by month series featuring classic top 50 UK singles charts from selected weeks. I say 'expanded' in the title because the David Cassidy single was a double 'A' side, so both tracks have been included, now creating a 51 track set. BBC Radio 1 also introduced a brand new logo in 1973 which is featured on the cover art above.

This 3CD set contains many rare and extremely hard to find tracks, with many featured in their original 7" single form. A few tracks have never been released on CD and are the original vinyl rips digitally edited and cleaned up in Audacity.  Only the original studio mixes are included. No later remixes, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here (unless the officially released track was indeed a live version)!  Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters (where available), with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

K SPECIAL PART 4 of 12.  I hope you enjoy this new series and get the opportunity to revisit old favourites and long forgotten hits.

SPECIALTY

VA - The Specialty Story [1994] (5 x CDs)

Label-owner Art Rupe was a savvy businessman who knew the black jukebox industry and what made it tick when he started his Specialty label in the late-'40s. This sumptuous five-disc box set contains a bevy of highlights from this seminal R&B/rock & roll label.

There are many retrospectives of early rock n'roll, but this is one of the best. Not only do you get Little Richard and Larry Williams, modestly represented so as to make room for all the other artists that Specialty had on their roster, but you also get the very first R&B record release, the Sepia Tones "Boogie" plus tunes from Roy Milton and his Solid Senders, Joe Liggins and his Honeydrippers & Jimmy Liggins & his Drops of Joy. The ladies are represented by Camille Howard, and the Blues Woman, Marion Abernathy. The liner notes reveal that Specialty also dabbled in country & western, jazz and gospel. It would be nice to see those selections get the same treatment.

I can't say enough about this fantastic tribute to one of the cornerstone labels of the R&B/rock'n'roll era! Specialty owner Art Rupe deserves a spot at the same table as the Erteguns, Wexlers, Chess's and Sam Phillips as a founding father of the music. This 5 disc set gives all the highlights of the label's decade long run. Producer Billy Vera has compiled an essential box set. (Amazon)

This is simply wonderful! A box set that no lover of the real thing can be without.

Hank Ballard & The Midnighters Nothing But Good (1952-1962) [2009] (5 x CDs)

HANK BALLARD

Hank Ballard & The Midnighters Nothing But Good (1952-1962) [2009] (5 x CDs)

Everything the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer and his vocal group cut for the Federal and King labels from 1952 to 1962. Five jam-packed discs include unissued gems, alternate takes, unreissued rarities, and a demo version of The Twist as well as the classic hit. Featuring the original hit versions.

In rock & roll shorthand, Hank Ballard is the man who invented "the Twist," only to see Chubby Checker steal it out from under him. It is true but it's too simplistic, overlooking his earlier down-and-dirty,very dirty,R&B hits like "Work with Me Annie," how he twisted and expanded his Clyde McPhatter influence into a raw, gritty sound that influenced James Brown, how he and the Midnighters, the group he overtook in 1952, built a body of work that contains some of the best R&B and rock & roll of its time. Ballard embodied his time -- he worked with a vocal group, he didn't necessarily push sounds forward -- but he was a transitional figure because of his earthiness, how his voice dripped with carnality and his music had great, gritty rhythms. All this can be discerned on Rhino's excellent 2003 compilation Sexy Ways, but Bear Family's exhaustive box, Nothing But Good (1952-1962), winds up painting a fuller picture with its details, allowing a greater appreciation for his considerable talents.

That isn't to say that the five discs of Nothing But Good are nothing but good -- there's a fair amount of formative recordings and filler, not to mention novelties, and Ballard was not above attempting to get another hit by copying the last, at one time shoehorning all three of his big hits into one song. Some of this was standard practice for rockers desperate to score another hit, but Ballard enthusiastically embraced sequels and rewrites right from the beginning, cutting a series of answers to his first big hit, 1954's "Work with Me Annie." Within a year, he had "Work Baby," "Annie Had a Baby," and "Annie's Aunt Fannie," and he would repeat this pattern once Chubby Checker turned Ballard's B-side, "The Twist," into a hit. Surely, there's a streak of commercial opportunism more than a mile wide at play, but listening to disc after disc on Nothing But Good, Ballard never seems crass, he seems joyous and alive. His energy and phrasing were a clear influence on James Brown, as was the Midnighters' blend of doo wop, dance, and guitar-driven R&B, one that had strong elements of urban electric blues, best heard on the churning, grinding hit "Look at Little Sister" but elsewhere, like on "I Must Be Crazy." All this apparent comes into sharp relief due the heft of this five-disc set, a box that certainly has a few wrong turns if not necessarily slow spots, for it's all fascinating, often invigorating listening. In fact, the sheer volume of Nothing But Good works in Ballard's favor, proving that he was a tireless, infectious performer whose talents ran far deeper than conventional wisdom suggests.
