SAN FRANCISCO NUGGETS

VA - San Francisco Nuggets, Elevated (A Butterboy Compilation) (4 x CDs)

What I’m offering here is not just another deep‑dive into the Bay Area’s past. This is a listening experience built to lift you out of the usual narratives and drop you right into the pulse of a city that never stopped reinventing itself. San Francisco Nuggets, Elevated is my attempt to gather the shimmer, the grit, the wildness, and the quiet beauty of four decades of music that shaped the region from the inside out. Every track is chosen for the way it opens a door, the way it carries a little spark of the place it came from.

CD1 FOLK TO FREAKopens with the bright jangle and folk‑rock shimmer that marked the mid‑sixties Bay Area. Wildflower, The Serpent Power, The New Tweedy Brothers, The E‑Types, and The Mojo Men all carry that mix of innocence and ambition. The tracks feel handmade, full of small harmonies and sharp guitars, and the sequencing moves with the ease of a local radio hour where garage pop, soft psych, and early experimentation all share the same air.

CD2 GARAGE BURNERS, tightens the grip abd shifts into the garage‑burner heart of the region. Towaway Zone, The Harbinger Complex, The Fabs, The Vipers, The Plague, and The Syndicate of Sound bring a rawer edge, built on tight rooms, cheap amps, and the urgency of teenage bands trying to cut through the noise. The energy is immediate. These are records made for dances, basements, and small clubs, and the compilation preserves that sense of motion.

CD3 ACID BLOOM, expands the frame. Here the Bay Area’s psychedelic imagination takes hold. Quicksilver Messenger Service, Frumious Bandersnatch, The Great Society, Tripsichord Music Box, Mad River, and Fifty Foot Hose show how far the scene could stretch. Long forms, modal grooves, experimental electronics, and folk‑poetic turns sit together without strain. The disc feels like a map of the city’s more adventurous corners, where improvisation and structure were always in conversation.

CD4 SUNSET ECHOES, closes the set with a reflective sweep. Womb, It’s A Beautiful Day, Jefferson Airplane, Ace of Cups, Hot Tuna, and The Grateful Dead bring a quieter, more spacious tone. The songs drift between folk, psych, and early country‑rock, carrying the weight of late‑sixties change. The mood is softer but no less vivid, as if the city is catching its breath after years of invention.

San Francisco Nuggets, Elevated is less about defining the era and more about following it as it moves. You move through rooms, moods, and small revelations, hearing how the Bay Area kept reshaping its sound without losing its spirit. This is the San Francisco I want you to hear. Restless, melodic, unpredictable, and alive. A listening experience like no other. (B)

RE: pixeldrain I don't know if I am the only one being effected, but ever since your posting of "Carmell Jones - Mosaic" I have not been able to access the pixeldrain link on your daily posting. I am in North America.
    Thanks,

  2. Beautiful BB, thanks very much. I only visited SF once (about twenty years ago), but I loved the vibe of the place, it really felt like I was somewhere pretty special. This is a wonderful soundtrack to that most unique of cities.

    1. Hi harry the dog,
San Francisco has that effect on people, even if you only pass through once. There’s a feeling in the air that’s hard to pin down, a mix of history, colour, and something quietly electric. If this set brings a bit of that atmosphere back for you, then it’s doing exactly what it should. Enjoy the music always.
      Cheers.

Just by looking at the tracklist and the exceptional artwork, the journey toward a dream that began sixty years ago is already underway.
We will continue dreaming in this world of nightmares.

    1. Hi Jose,
Your words capture the spirit of this set perfectly. Just seeing the tracks and artwork can feel like the beginning of a long, bright dream, the kind that started all those years ago and still refuses to fade. Music gives us a place to breathe when the world tilts the wrong way, and I’m glad this one opened that door for you.
      Cheers.

  4. Thanks BB. Travelling in a camper with friends I was in SF in 1969, a brief visit. I thought it was full of week-end plastic wanna-bees. I went to City Lights bought a few books and left. But the music! It has lasted and will always be heard.

    1. Hi lemonflag,
A brief visit can still leave a sharp impression, and 1969 San Francisco was a mix of the genuine and the weekend poseurs, just as you describe. City Lights was always the real anchor, a place where the noise dropped away and the words mattered. The music, though, is the part that stayed true. It outlasted the fashions, the crowds, the plastic edges, and it still carries the spark of that moment. Glad this set brought some of that back into focus.
      Cheers.

    1. Hi Josevaty,
San Francisco in those years really did carry that mix in the air, love drifting through the streets and the unmistakable scent of something sweet and a little wild. If this set brings even a hint of that atmosphere back, then the mood is right where it should be.
      Cheers.

    1. Hi D,
Groovy indeed. That whole Flower Power glow still hangs around these tracks, bright and a little unruly, the kind of sound that makes the world feel lighter for a while. Really glad the artwork delights, it was a joy to shape something that matched the mood of the music.
      Cheers.

  9. I put this on and the memories come rushing back. Smiling and listening. Grew up in the Bay Area and so many of these songs I've heard many times. San Francisco was a magical place when I used to go there. Riding BART to Montgomery St exit. Walking till it turned into Columbus. Stopping at the City Lights Bookstore to buy books by Kerouac and other Beat writers that hung out there in the 1950's. Hoofin'n it down to the wharf and buying a crab and eating there or walking down to the marina to dine with a few beers. There was a airy lightness in the bands music that always reminded me of the sound of light winds blowing in from the Golden Gate. Almost thought I could hear the music flowing in the wind. Course might of been the beers and weed playing tricks on me. Thanks for the discs. Love this stuff.

    1. Hi RichardR,
What a beautiful set of memories. Growing up in the Bay Area gives you a connection to this music that goes deeper than nostalgia. The way you describe those walks, drifting up Columbus, stepping into City Lights, then wandering toward the water with a crab and a couple of beers, it paints the city exactly as these tracks feel. Light on the surface, full of movement underneath, always carrying that breeze from the Gate.
That airy lift you mention is right there in so many of these songs. Maybe it was the wind, maybe it was the weed, maybe it was just the magic of being young in a place that felt alive in every direction. Either way, the music still holds it.
Really glad the set brought all that rushing back.
      Cheers.

  10. Finally started listening to, and looking at, this set - wow, BB, it's magnificent! Did you write all the liner notes - they're professional quality, detailed, informative, and a pleasure to read, to be sure! And the selection beats the official box (which I found unrepresentative and unlistenable) by miles & miles! Thanks again!

    1. Hi Gummo,
Really glad you took the time to sit with it properly. This set was a big one to shape, so hearing that it lands for you means a lot. And yes, all the liner notes are mine. I wanted them to feel like a guided walk through the scene, not just a list of names and dates, so it’s lovely to know they read that way on your end.
As for the music, I’m with you. The Rhino box skimmed the surface and missed the heart of what made the Bay Area so strange and brilliant. This version tries to bring that spirit back into focus, the rough edges and the unexpected corners included.
Thanks again for the generous and kind words.
      Cheers.

  11. Hi BB, might I ask, how long and how deep you are into the music rabbit hole? Is there a genre you can't cover? This is a very fine compilation indeed, don't know how you do it each time. Living in Europe, I can only guess about the Californian hedonistic life style, though end of the seventies I got quite into it via the neo-psychedelic revival, some biker friends etc. The first two discs are more obscure to me, so I'll check those out first. And as an aside, I did reconnect with The Dead's music, especially the Keith and Donna era. They did produce some very fine music indeed. And now let's all get dosed and tune in, man! Well, some stories are better left untold :) . Take care grtz.

    1. Hi J_M,
The rabbit hole started early for me and just kept widening. I think i was around 8 or 9 years old when I realised the importance of music in one's life. Once you fall into music with both feet, the decades and genres stack up until you realise there isn’t really a bottom, only more rooms to wander into. Some styles speak louder than others, but there’s very little I won’t explore if there’s a spark in it.
Your memories of the late‑seventies revival ring true. That mix of neo‑psych colour, biker grit, and a bit of California mythology drifting across the ocean created its own kind of doorway. I hope they give you a few surprises. And yes, reconnecting with the Dead is always a good move. There is a lot of beauty tucked into those tracks if you let them breathe.
Agreed, some stories are indeed better left floating in the haze.
Enjoy this set. Revisiting it from time to time will bring rewards.
      Cheers.
