SIDNEY BECHET
Sidney Bechet - Mosaic Select 22 [2006] (3 x CDs)
Mosaic Select 22, released in 2006 as a three‑CD limited edition of five thousand sets, gathers Sidney Bechet recordings made between 1923 and 1947 for Columbia, OKeh, Variety and Vocalion. The material comes from original metal parts, lacquer discs and carefully sourced 78s, giving the set a strong archival foundation. These transfers reveal Bechet’s mastery of the soprano saxophone and clarinet, instruments he projected with a power and authority that shaped early jazz and influenced musicians across generations.
The first disc focuses on the Clarence Williams Blue Five and related small‑group sessions from the mid‑twenties, performances that show Bechet already fully formed in his twenties. The phrasing is bold, the tone unmistakable, and the interplay with the ensemble carries a sense of urgency that reflects the era’s studio limitations and musical ambition. Many of these sides are rare, often surviving only in fragile 78s, making their restoration an important part of the set’s value.
The second disc moves into the late thirties, beginning with Bechet’s work as a sideman in the Noble Sissle Orchestra. These recordings show how his sound could lift a big band, adding colour and drive without overwhelming the arrangement. The disc also includes a Vocalion session that pairs Bechet with baritone saxophonist Ernie Caceres, a meeting that highlights Bechet’s ability to adapt to different textures while maintaining his melodic identity. The first Columbia session under his leadership appears here as well, featuring his protégé Bob Wilber, whose understanding of Bechet’s style adds depth to the date.
The third disc presents material from 1947, recorded with Bechet’s quartet at Jimmy Ryan’s. These performances show him moving comfortably between traditional tunes and popular standards, shaping each piece with clarity and confidence. Several previously unissued takes appear here, adding further insight into his working methods.
Mosaic Select 22 offers a detailed view of Bechet’s craft, preserved with care and presented with respect for the music’s history. (B)

Thank you, Mike,
DeleteGlad you're enjoying the Bechet set.
As for Aaron Copland, I do have a few things tucked away in the archive, although nothing ready for posting at the moment. He certainly deserves more attention, though. I'll keep your request in mind and see what I can dig up.
Cheers.
Thanks for another Sunday jazz treat BB

DeleteThe immortal Bechet, in various stages of his artistry. The greatest of all the jazz soprano sax and clarinet players imo. Such a brilliantly archived set in superb audio quality, .So much appreciate this great treasure BB. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Richard,
DeleteThat's high praise indeed. Bechet was a giant, and every time I listen to him, I'm reminded just how distinctive his sound was.
I'm glad you're enjoying the set. Mosaic really did a wonderful job preserving this music.

BB, Thank you for every one of these Mosaic and Mosaic Select recordings. The enormity of what Michael Cuscuna has done for jazz! His Mosaic, Mosaic Select, and Blue Note productions, along with everything else he produced are a testament to his love of music, particularly jazz. And thanks to you, we are the beneficiaries!
ReplyDeleteHi WFKIII,
DeleteMichael Cuscuna's contribution to jazz preservation is impossible to overstate. He helped rescue and present an incredible amount of music that might otherwise have remained unheard or forgotten.
We're all fortunate to be able to enjoy the fruits of that dedication, and I'm glad to play a small part in helping these wonderful sets reach appreciative ears.
Cheers.
Sidney here we are in front of a stepping stone in the early history of jazz. Definitely getting this one. Thanks BB.
ReplyDeleteHi Aitor,
DeleteYou won't regret it. Bechet really was one of the giants of early jazz, and it's fascinating to hear his artistry develop across these recordings. Mosaic did a wonderful job with this set.
Hope you enjoy the journey.
Cheers.
I have always felt that I would get to enjoy jazz when I was more grown. It's a natural evolution from easier blues and other Black musics to arrive at jazz. Actually it was when I watched the Ken Burns' documentaries that I got from this blog when I started to have a clearer view of the history of this ensemble of musics, coming from Black America, Africa ... The first chapter of the series captivated my attention with its stories about Congo Square, the vaudeville, the influences that arrived from Jamaica, and the gumbo and New Orleans. Cheers buddy.
DeleteIs there any chance that you'll be posting the Mosaic set of Classic Oscar Peterson Studio Sessions
ReplyDeleteWith Ray Brown & Ed Thigpen soon?
Hi Jazz Lover,
DeleteIt's certainly on my radar. No promises on timing, it only came out in June this year.
For now, I will complete the Mosaic Select Series before I post other sets.
Cheers.
Thanks
