VA - El Barrio, The Ultimate Collection Of Latin Boogaloo, Disco, Funk & Soul [2011] (4 x CD's)

EL BARRIO

VA - El Barrio, The Ultimate Collection Of Latin Boogaloo, Disco, Funk & Soul [2011] (4 x CD's)

In the 60's and 70's, Puerto Ricans flooded into "El Barrio," as they called New York's Spanish Harlem. They brought with them the music of their homeland and mixed it with R&B, rock, and jazz to create a distinctive "Nuyorican" sound. It was an astonishingly fruitful period, and the Fania label captured it in all its glory.  This 4 x CD box set documents the development of Latin funk, disco, boogaloo, soul, and especially salsa, for which Fania is justly most famous. Such artists as Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, Joe Bataan, Willie Colon, Tito Puente, Joe Cuba, Eddie Palmieri, and the Fania All Stars bring you spicy fusions of Latin and Black music that will blow your mind whether you're swaying on the beach or grooving on the dancefloor.  Central to this music is its relentless rhythm, played on congas and cowbells and funky bass guitars, accented by tight horn charts and shouts in English and Spanish. In addition to dozens of delightful hits and rarities, both vocal and instrumental, there are covers of James Brown's "I Got the Feeling," Lester Young's "Jumpin' with Symphony Sid," Patti Labelle's "Lady Marmalade," and Clarence Henry's "Evil Ways," which was first recorded by Willie Bobo and later made famous by Santana. It's both extraordinarily tasty and emphatically recommended. (Amazon)

Stevie Wonder - At The Close Of A Century [1999] (4 x CD's)

STEVIE WONDER

Stevie Wonder - At The Close Of A Century [1999] (4 x CD's)

"At the Close of a Century" may seem a rather portentous title for a box set, even one showcasing the work of such a formidable writer-performer as Stevie Wonder. Consider, though, that these discs appeared a few months before Wonder's 50th birthday and that he had already spent 36 years making records; he has more right than most to get a little highfalutin when invoking temporal milestones. Despite various retrospectives over the years, At The Close Of A Century is the first to cover the arc of Wonder's entire career. By the end of the first disc we've heard his early Motown hits and watched him develop into the masterful artist who'd go on to stack up landmark album after landmark album in the '70s. (Aretha Franklin's Wonder-penned hit "Until You Come Back to Me" is here in a rare version by the composer.) The string of LP's from Talking Book (1972) to Hotter Than July (1980) provides gem after gem on the two middle CD's with all of 1973's Innervisions save one cut represented, while post-"Master Blaster" winners such as "That Girl" and "Overjoyed" are the meat of the final disc. Add a smart booklet of essays, photos, and a discography, and this handsome package starts to look like a sharp addition to the collections of even hard-core Stevie buffs. (Amazon)

Finally there’s a boxed set that covers his entire career with 70 tracks drawn from singles, soundtracks and 20 albums.

VA - OHM, The Early Gurus Of Electronic Music 1948-1980 [2000] (3 x CD's)

GURUS OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC

VA - OHM, The Early Gurus Of Electronic Music 1948-1980 [2000] (3 x CD's)

Leaps in technology: oscillators, generators, vacuum tubes, amplifiers, transistors, magnetic tape, integrated circuits, and the microchip— inspired new instruments: the telharmonium, theremin, ondes martenot, electronic sackbut, clavivox, electronium, moog synthesizer, and computers— and artists everywhere hungry for new modes of expression. This collection is a humble but bold attempt to give form to the wonderful, multi-directional, inevitable birth of electronic music.  "Many of the ideas in this collection have now been so completely assimilated into popular listening that it may sometimes be hard to remember how surprising it all was on first outing. Some of it still sounds pretty exotic. These CD's are important as part of the story of how we got to where we are now–the cultural conversation so far and as a still fruitful repertoire of future possibilities." —from the Foreword by Brian Eno

Brian Eno's foreword to the compilation -

If you're under ninety, chances are that you've spent most of your life listening to electronic music. The experience that used to be called music up until about the 1920s - listening to someone sing or play a musical instrument live and unamplified - actually forms an increasingly minor percentage of our listening experiences now. Instead, we listen to records, or we listen to the radio, or we go to see musicians who transmit electronic signals through electronic PA systems. It might seem extreme to include all the products of the recording age under the umbrella term electronic music, but I think it's warranted. The process of recording music separated it from time and place and as such eventually led to all the amazing experiments presented on these records.  Whenever a new musical technology appears, new forms of music follow it. Debussy was apparently so thrilled by the three-pedal Steinway (the middle pedal allows you to sustain one chord while playing unsustained notes over it) that he wrote many new pieces specifically for it. In the same way, the many new possibilities of electronics have given rise to whole new forms of music.

John Cage said that any sound could be described by four characteristics: pitch, duration, timbre, and loudness. One way of thinking about electronic music is as a continuous expansion of all these characteristics. We can make sounds of almost infinite loudness, using pitches as low or as high as we want, that last for as long as there's electricity, and of infinite shades of timbre. If you were to compare it with painting, it would be as though, about seventy years ago, painters started to discover how to make completely new colours, colours that no one had ever seen before. But the electronic revolution changed more than just our ability to control the physical parameters of sounds. By turning sound into a plastic material manipulable in space and time - it drew the process of composition closer to the processes of the plastic and visual arts. The impressionists in their painting, had aspired to "the condition of music," envying its ability to be both abstract and emotionally engaging. Meanwhile, much of the musical composition of our century has drawn closer to the condition of painting or sculpture, as composer have started to think about music as a tactile experience in time and space. So many new areas of consideration now fall under the heading "composition." For classical composers, there were certain describable islands of sound: a clarinet, for example, is a number of sonic and playing possibilities, whereas a harp is another. If you write "violin" in a score, everybody knows what you mean. That isn't possible, however, it you write "electric guitar" or "synthesizer." A synthesizer isn't really, in that sense one instrument, it is a bag of possibilities from which you assemble your instrument. So the first thing an electronic composer does is build a set of instruments, a soundworld.

But that's only one issue. There are also quite new questions about where the music should take place. The concert hall is of course still a possibility, but only one among many. The home hi-fi, the gallery installation, the Walkman, the supermarket aisle, and the unexpected public space are all equally interesting. Are you making a private or public experience? And since the music can theoretically last as long as you want it to, are you making a ore-night performance or creating a sound-object to persist for decades? Are you making something that you expect people to hear once or hundreds of time? Are you making something that will stay the same or change endlessly? What will govern the way it changes? Does it react to anything outside itself, or is it driven by internal rules? What are those rules?  The composers represented on this compilation have addressed questions like these and many others. They've helped develop a vocabulary of perspectives for music that is quite new to this century and that has, perhaps surprisingly, become part of a very fruitful interchange with popular music. Indeed, one way of looking at contemporary pop is to see it as the offspring of an ongoing affair between African music and Western electronics (with European harmonisation as the influential godmother).  Many of the ideas in this collection have now been so completely assimilated into popular listening that it may sometimes be hard to remember how surprising it all was on first outing. Some of it still sounds pretty exotic. As music, some of it stands the test of time. As ideas, most of it does. These CDs are important as part of the story of how we got to where we are now - the cultural conversation so far - and as a still fruitful repertoire of future possibilities. (Brian Eno, Nov 1999)

PYE & DAWN

VA - Cave Of Clear Light, The Pye And Dawn Records Underground Trip 1967-1975 [2010] (3 x CD's)

During the rise of the psychedelic underground on the British rock scene in the late ‘60s with bands like Traffic, Pink Floyd, the Nice, et al., the music industry scrambled to accommodate the new market created by these sounds. Their solution was the establishment of new imprints to specialize in the styles the longhairs of the day were pursuing; EMI's Harvest label -- home of Pink Floyd -- is a prime example. The Pye label, which had been through everything from skiffle to blues to Merseybeat, answered the call by inaugurating its own "hip" outlet, Dawn Records. This delicious three-disc collection -- with a well-appointed booklet -- chronicles the brief but bountiful Dawn years, from 1967 to 1975. Following Cave of Clear Light from beginning to end is like having an audio documentary of the way the underground music scene unfolded in England during the aforementioned era. Folk-rock and full-on paisley-patterned, canyons-of-your-mind psychedelia were the flavors of the day at the beginning, the latter represented most prominently by Pye's biggest breadwinner, Donovan, on the hits "Season of the Witch" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man," not to mention more esoteric but equally arresting outings like John Kongos' surreally Dylanesque "Confusions About a Goldfish." Psychedelically speaking, it's intriguing to discover the trippy beginnings of bands later known for heavier sounds -- this package's mind-bending title track comes from the Bystanders, who soon become known as Welsh axe meisters Man, while archetypal ‘70s boogie band Status Quo's psychedelic roots are laid bare on the heady, organ-drenched "Paradise Flat," and Episode Six's atmospheric, expansive take on "Morning Dew" offers few clues that their members would soon be found in Deep Purple. Of course, Cave of Clear Light follows psychedelia's evolution into progressive rock in the early to mid- ‘70s as well, and even though prog outfits like Fruupp and Jonesy never made it to a King Crimson/Yes level of renown, they're no less worthy of attention, and the collection nicely fills in some historical gaps in this area. For anyone even vaguely interested in psychedelic or progressive rock (not to mention the styles' hardcore adherents), these three discs are a treasure trove of sweet sonic surprises. UK PUNK

VA - Action Time Vision, A Story Of Independent UK Punk 1976-1979 [2016] (4 x CD's)

In the early years of the punk rock explosion of the 70's, the record industry didn't know what to make of the aggressive new sound. Punk certainly seemed like the coming thing, but no one seemed sure of how to sell music that was built around open disrespect for authority figures -- which in the eyes of the punks included the music industry. Thankfully, punk was born with a passionate desire to document itself, and if the major labels weren't going to put punk rock on records, the punks would do it themselves. No previous rock movement was more closely associated with independent labels and the D.I.Y. philosophy than punk, and countless indie labels were launched to commit fresh talent to vinyl. Action Time Vision: A Story of Independent U.K. Punk 1976-1979 is an exhaustive and wildly entertaining four-volume box set that examines both the indie label scene in the United Kingdom as well as the bands that emerged on homegrown labels. The set opens, fittingly enough, with "New Rose" by the Damned, widely acknowledged as the first British punk single and the release that turned Stiff Records into a going concern. Just as that record still sounds fresh and explosive four decades later, nearly all of the 111 songs on Action Time Vision are filled with energy, passion, and a sense of discovery, as the musicians strive to find their place in a new musical landscape and have fun doing it. This set is also a potent reminder that early punk was never as monochromatic as many liked to believe (or as samey as U.K. punk would become in the '80s). Along with the foursquare punk attack of the Lurkers, the Cortinas, Sham 69, and many others, there's the speeded-up pub rock of Fruit Eating Bears, the joyous power pop of the Stoat, the prog-inspired twists and turns of Psykik Voltz, the arty minimalism of English Subtitles, the psych-inspired surrealism of Victim, the edgy cool of the Flys, and the acoustic guitar in a bedsit parody/tribute of Patrik Fitzgerald. And while the set includes lots of familiar names, the compilers have included plenty of obscurities that often prove to be as satisfying as the best-known tracks, another reminder of how fertile this era truly was. (There are also a number of tracks from artists who would go on to greater fame in the future, such as Billy Bragg in Riff Raff, Kevin Rowland in the Killjoys, and Shane MacGowan in the Nipple Erectors.) The liner notes from Andy Davis are a great read, and an impressive history of the many bands and labels featured here. This is hardly the first or best study of the U.K. punk scene of the 70's, but Action Time Vision is an impressive tribute to the early stirrings of indie culture in England, and it's great listening throughout.
