VA - Soda Pop Babies -Vol. 01-12 [2012 - 2023] (12 x CDs)

If you’ve ever wondered what it sounded like when teenage ambition met a jukebox in the late ’50s and early ’60s, Soda Pop Babies delivers the answer in 12 glorious volumes and still growing. Released by Sweden’s Classics Records between 2011 and 2023, this series is a love letter to the girl-pop underground, where hopeful starlets, regional one-offs, and sock-hop dreamers poured their hearts into two-minute slices of pop perfection.

Each volume is packed with 30 tracks (except Vol. 1, 28 tracks), mostly by female artists who never quite cracked the charts but left behind shimmering gems of innocence, sass, and heartbreak. You’ll hear everything from rockabilly shuffles and doo-wop ballads to twist-ready floor-fillers and teen melodrama. The names might be unfamiliar, Robin Garrett, Dixie Lee Stone, Calie Bitetti, but the spirit is unmistakable, wide-eyed, full-throated, and ready for the spotlight.

What makes the series special is its commitment to the obscure. These aren’t recycled hits or major-label leftovers, they’re deep digs from dusty 45s, often pressed in tiny batches and forgotten until now. The sound is mono, the fidelity varies, but the charm is off the charts. Tracks like “Gee-Gosh,” “Cryin’ Room,” and “Fickle John” feel like secret messages from another era, preserved with care and affection.

The artwork is consistent across volumes, bright, kitschy, and playful, evoking soda fountains, drive-ins, and pin-up gloss. There’s no liner note deep dive, but the sequencing speaks volumes: each disc flows like a lost radio broadcast from a teenage dreamland.

For collectors, it’s a goldmine. For casual listeners, it’s pure joy. And for archivists it’s a treasure trove of female-fronted pop that deserves a second (or first) listen. Whether you’re cataloging rarities or just chasing that warm, analog glow, Soda Pop Babies is a series that sings, swings, and sparkles, one volume at a time. (B)

VA - Let Freedom Sing The Music of the Civil Rights Movement [2009] (3 x CDs)

Released by Time Life in 2009, Let Freedom Sing is a powerful 3-CD box set tracing the soundtrack of America’s Civil Rights struggle from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Across 58 tracks, it documents how music gave voice to resistance, hope, and identity, blending gospel, blues, folk, soul, funk, and protest songs into a living archive of social change.

CD1 opens with spirituals and early protest songs: Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit,” Josh White’s “Uncle Sam Says,” and Mahalia Jackson’s “We Shall Overcome” sit alongside lesser-known gems like Brother Will Hairston’s “The Alabama Bus” and The Jubilee Hummingbirds’ “Our Freedom Song.” These tracks reflect the movement’s roots in church halls, union meetings, and street marches.

CD2 shifts into the soul and funk era, with James Brown’s “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud,” Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” and Curtis Mayfield’s “We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue.” It’s a mix of anthems and deep cuts—Syl Johnson’s “Is It Because I’m Black” and Swamp Dogg’s “I Was Born Blue” add raw emotional weight.

CD3 moves into the 1970s and beyond, with Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up,” and Chuck D’s “The Pride.” It closes with Solomon Burke’s “None of Us Are Free,” a reminder that the struggle continues.

While many songs are well-known, the sequencing and archival depth make this more than a greatest hits, it’s a curated journey through decades of resistance, where music didn’t just reflect change, it helped make it. (B)

SPOKEN WORK DOCUMENTARY

VA – Great Speeches of the 20th Century [1991] (4 x CDs) + Bonus CD

Here’s a box set that doesn’t just document history, it lets you hear it breathe. Released in 1991 by Rhino Word Beat, Great Speeches of the 20th Century is a 4 CD spoken-word anthology that pulls together 68 original recordings from some of the most pivotal moments of the last hundred years. No reenactments, no overdubs, just the real voices, crackling through time, complete with crowd noise, tape hiss, and the kind of urgency you can’t fake.

CD1 The Political Arena - kicks off with William Howard Taft’s 1908 campaign speech and winds through Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Nixon, JFK, Reagan, and Jesse Jackson. You get Roosevelt’s “The only thing we have to fear…” and Nixon’s full “Checkers” speech, plus Mario Cuomo’s soaring “Family of America” address. It’s a crash course in American political voice, from fireside chats to convention thunder.

CD2 The Changing World - expands the scope. Churchill’s first wartime radio broadcast, Roosevelt’s “Day of Infamy,” Truman announcing Hiroshima, and JFK’s Cuban Missile Crisis speech all land here. You also get Hitler’s Sudetenland address and Khrushchev’s side of the Kitchen Debate. It’s tense, global, and often chilling—history unfolding in real time.

CD3 The Dreams, The Inspirations, The Accomplishments -  is where the heart kicks in. Amelia Earhart talks aviation, Lou Gehrig bids farewell, and MLK delivers “I Have a Dream” in full. Neil Armstrong’s moon landing and Frank Borman’s Apollo 8 Christmas message add cosmic perspective. It’s a disc of hope, vision, and quiet triumphs.

CD4 Best of Times, Worst of Times - dives into protest, scandal, and reckoning. Malcolm X speaks on Black Power, Jerry Rubin rallies the Yippies, and Gloria Steinem addresses the women of America. Nixon concedes in 1962, Oliver North defends himself in Iran-Contra, and the Kitchen Debate plays out in full. It’s messy, raw, and deeply human.

Compiled by Gordon Skene, this set isn’t just for historians, it’s for anyone who wants to feel the pulse of the 20th century through the voices that shaped it. No polish, no filters—just the sound of conviction, conflict, and change.

Also included in this post is a bonus disc Released in 2007 by The Guardian, Great Speeches of the 20th Century is a single-disc compilation introduced by Polly Toynbee, featuring 10 landmark recordings from global leaders and changemakers. From Roosevelt’s “Fear Itself” to Mandela’s Rivonia Trial speech, the set spans war, resistance, civil rights, and personal conviction. Churchill, Nehru, Thatcher, MLK, and Charles Spencer all appear in crisp archival form, offering a compact but powerful listening experience. Though distinct from Rhino’s sprawling 4-CD box, this UK-issued disc stands strong as a curated snapshot of 20th-century rhetoric. (B)
