SUNSHINE POP
VA - Good Day Sunshine, Rays of Sunshine Pop (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3
Sunshine Pop is a retrospective term for a more cheerful or wistful style of Pop which emerged in the mid 1960s as "soft pop". Influenced by Easy Listening, Jingles, and Psychedelia, the genre largely consisted of lesser-known artists who imitated more popular groups like The Association, The Mamas & The Papas, and The 5th Dimension. The music usually contains light production, catchy melodies, and prominent vocal harmonies. Common instruments are acoustic guitars and/or piano accompanied by Western Classical Music instruments like harpsichord, glockenspiel, and flute.
The style should not be conflated with "sunshine/happy music" or "Beach Boys-esque music" - though influential, the Beach Boys almost never worked in the genre. Sunshine pop is typically inflected with jazzy chords and soft Bossa nova rhythms, and despite its name, may inspire melancholy and a sense of longing for the past. Fruits, colors, and/or cosmic concepts were also recurrent subject matter. Sometimes, the music may resemble Psychedelic Pop with less surreal atmospherics, Bubblegum with more sophistication, or a merge of Folk Pop and Psychedelic Folk. Some song examples are "Windy", "Monday, Monday", and "Up, Up and Away", those of which served as a template for artists like The Free Design, The Peppermint Rainbow, The Sugar Shoppe, Harmony Grass, and The Yellow Balloon.
Los Angeles-based songwriters/producers like Roger Nichols, Jimmy Webb, and Paul Williams had a major hand in shaping many sunshine pop acts. Building on the "California Sound" formulated by the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and the Mamas and the Papas' John Phillips, Curt Boettcher became one of the most pivotal figures of sunshine pop, producing quintessential psyche pop crossover albums like Eternity's Children, Begin, and Present Tense. In the 1980s and 1990s, sunshine pop found a resurgence in Japan, strongly influencing many prime Shibuya-kei players. This revitalized interest in sunshine pop eventually reached Europe and the United States, and the genre was revived among indie musicians. (RYM)
I could easily fill many more CD's but here are 75 examples of Sunshine Pop that I hope you will enjoy.

Thank you for your great compilations :-)
ReplyDeleteYour welcome,mystery person
DeleteThanks for the kind words.
Can't wait to hear this. It wasn't cool to listen to it when I was growing up, but man, does it sound great now. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteHi BillyMac
DeleteYour absolutely correct , wasn't cool when I was growing up, But guess what, I grew Up Thanks for your comment.
ANOTHER awesome assembly! Your collection must be deep, and what amazes me is that you are so familiar with it all, that you can assemble these extremely diverse anthologies. Well done, sir.
ReplyDeleteOne of my enjoyments is 12" disco. Any thoughts to upping the Grand Twelve Inches, Vol. 14 collection? Thanks again.
Thank you jwittkamp. Apreciate your comments and for dropping in.
DeleteI will attempt to put up the 12" Series again at some stage. Keep looking
Thank you for the sunshine, ButterBoy - right on time... cheers!
ReplyDeleteThanks Aging Child, Knew you would be interested in this one.
DeleteHope all is looking up for you.
Well, just discovered your Butterboy blog by way of 13 afternoon's blog, so that worked well and I'll be checking it regularly. Love compilations in general, and Sunshine Pop is surely a favorite (of many!). Having interacted with some of these groups over the years makes this already great collection even better. You have made good solid knowledgeable and varied choices for tunes in this genre.. and 3 CD's worth!!! SUPER DUPER .. I Thank You
ReplyDeleteGlad you did mrRadio.
Delete13 afternoon is amazing and his standard is so high.
If compilation are your thing then you will find some great stuff here. I have a very eclectic taste and love most music, hope I can offer some to you.Hope you enjoy the choices. Cheers
Listened a couple times.. a few comments of what stood out for me, hope you don't mind feedback..
ReplyDeleteThe Cowsills.. Great and well-produced. You know they had help but still unexpected from a young group.
Peppermint Rainbow.. a fantastic pop song! Great into, voices.. awesome drumming here. Never tire of it.
Tommy James & The Shondells.. another super intro to a unique sounding and super song.
Mercy.. will always love this, time changes nothing. FYI to all, album and 45 versions differ noticeably on this one.
American Breed.. this group was more talented than most realized.
The Critters.. unforgettably memorable landmark song and sound. So smooth.
Fun and Games.. previously unknown to me, but I am really impressed by this song.
The Association.. one of their best tunes even though it didn't get so much airplay.
Chicago.. Wake Up Sunshine (your listing and tag need correction). Great arrangement and playing here.
It's A Beautiful Day.. This and White Bird were two of their best. Really takes me back in a good way.
Keith.. love enjoyable songs with great unique intros and this is one. Well sung and produced as well.
Spanky & Our Gang.. how could you not include them, great lead singer and group harmonies.
Groop.. another amazing and impressive discovery for me. I will be seeking out their music.
Shannons.. yet another amazing discovery here. Apparently they only had two singles out.. soooo good!!
R.E.M... thanks for including this one which I had been unaware of. It's a cool upbeat song.
New Colony Six.. these guys had some seriously great little tunes but they needed more national exposure.
Thanks for putting this together.. It is being enjoyed!! I would encourage you for more in this genre.
Well I'd better finish.. I stopped there only because I rambled enough and not because I didn't find the remaining third as cool as the rest. Roger Nichols and Flying Machine also stood out. Especially Flying Machine, don't know how many times I've passed that album over in the stores. Thank you for including this song as I don't think it ever made it to an album of theirs and I would have never known. The Fortunes and Johnny Rivers tunes are well known but good recordings of them here so thanks for including them! Take care.
