ATLANTIC RECORDS TIME CAPSULE 1947-2009
VA - Atlantic Records - Time Capsule 1947-2009
The Ultimate Collectors Limited Edition Box Set. The Atlantic Records Time Capsule was created in the same spirit that infused the label’s very beginnings. Just as the company’s founder, to quote the legendary Ahmet Ertegun, “Wanted to make the kind of records that we would buy,” we set out to assemble a collection that would tell a story that we would want to hear. From the onset, the idea was to present Atlantic Records “from the inside.” The collection was compiled by a small group of Atlantic staffers, who drew on rarely seen material from the company’s archives, Ahmet’s personal papers, and the work of staff photographers through the years. (Discogs)
It's obvious that this masterful box set was done with a lot of love. Spanning over 60 years of a catalog that's as rich as Atlantic's is no easy task, but the makers of this glorious box set have been able to conquer that task. It's an A++ project all the way through. Atlantic Records is without a doubt one of the most important record labels in music history, and this box set reaffirms its significance in music culture. Highly recommended. (Amazon)

What a wonderful collection; thank you so much! Somehow I missed it when it came out. I do want to mention one thing. You're in the habit of not including "The" in front of a group's name. I think this is a mistake, as sometimes there are two groups with the same name, except that one has "The" in front of their name and the other doesn't.
ReplyDeleteHope you get great enjoyment from this one Steve.
DeleteWith respect to the missing "The" I always take this off for ease of cataloging. Its a personal preference. Example I know Beatles is The Beatles so works better for me. And when there is a group that has the same name I express their name with the country of origin if needed ie Kaleidoscope (UK) or Kaleidoscope (US). Or in the case of the group The The I use the "The". Cheers
Sweet Collection Sir Thank You !
ReplyDeleteEnjoy Bones. Cheers
DeleteNice Collection
ReplyDeleteCheers
Tel
Thanks Tel. Hope its lives up to expectations. Cheers
DeleteWhat a span of years, and range of artists and songs - this looks like a fine collection, and a great soundtrack for auditory time-traveling. Thanks, Butter!
ReplyDeleteThought you may like this one. So many new versions her. Cheers.
DeleteHi BB, thanks for the explanation of your naming conventions And thanks, too, for the Smithsonian blues collection. Do you possibly have the compilations of songs from 1967 and 1968 that Jon Savage curated? The first is "Jon Savage's 1967 - The Year Pop Divided" and the other is Jon Savage's 1968 - The Year The World Burned". And let me just say that you have VERY rapidly established yourself as one of the best music blogs around! Thank you for your hard work and generosity. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteHi Steve
DeleteEnjoy the Smithsonian collection. Its really wonderful.
I do have the items you ask about for 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968. I will post them in the comments here soon as possible.
Finally thank you for your kind words about the Blog.
Cheers

Thanks for this, BB! The thing I love about this series is how it will have a (great) track everyone knows and then- wham!- three terrific songs that people our age have never even heard. I take it you don't have 1968. I think it's far and away the rarest of the bunch
ReplyDeleteHi Steve,
DeleteI do have the 68 CDs as well. I thought I posted it here but somehow missed it. Here is the link for JS 1968.

Boy, am I glad I circled back for another look - and am now doing some, er, Savage downloading. I concur appreciatively re your generosity... and wonder whether your Vault is so vast that it has its own localized weather patterns... and time zones. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteAnd circle you should. These wont be posted elsewhere by me. I have also posted the 1968 here above.
DeleteCheers FYI around 80,000 albums+/- no weather patterns to share yet but am am exploring whether or not i can get a zip code and lighting for the parks.... Cheers
Hiya, I see the value in buying this collection ($200 when new), for the packaging, the 140 page booklet and everything else, but as far as the actual tracks go, is there anything 'new' that hasn't already been released (relevant to say picking them all up before over the years, like 'the complete Motown singles' or the 'Stax Vaults' etc). This isn't for an old geezer like me is it really, but for a much younger someone who wants a "Hits of Atlantic" A-Z covering all genres of the most well known hits and artists that's missing from their newly begun collection - would that be a fair assumption?
ReplyDeleteHi puw,
DeleteSpot on, but some Older rockers sold off their collections or didn't have some of the tracks. This is still a great overview.
Cheers
The links are down, please, please, fixed them.
ReplyDeleteThanks, greetings from Peru...
Hi Roberto,
DeleteThe links are renewed, tested and working.
Cheers.
