RARE GARAGE
VA - A Journey To Tyme 80 Of The Rarest '60s Garage Tracks From The US And Canada [2009] (5 x CD's)
This is yet another collection of obscure garage bands mostly from the U.S. and Canada. However there's a couple of bands-one from the UK (Rats), and one from Scotland (Poets) that sneaked in somehow. The sound is good to very good-especially considering that these 45's were recorded fast and on the cheap. Each disc slips inside a cardboard envelope-which lists the bands and song titles, and everything fits inside a thick cardboard lidded box-which also lists bands/songs. The 40 page booklet lists the bands alphabetically, with a short synopsis of each band and the music. There's photos of a number of the bands too. Also included is a handy Index so you can find a particular band quickly-very thoughtful.
But don't think "obscure" mean "no talent". Are all the bands here good? No. But even they have a certain sound and spirit that comes through in their music. And that's the basis for garage bands-"let's form a band for fun, girls, and perhaps fame and fortune". Unfortunately they didn't make it. But these bands put everything they had into recording a 45-and you can hear it. The best of this music is full of loud guitars, pounding drums, and snarling vocals. And the mix of rock, pop, and psychedelic styles only adds to the depth of this collection. There's a lot of attitude from some of these local punks-if you get past the music-listen to some of the lyrics.
Comparisons would be the Pebble series, or maybe the seven volumes released by Sundazed. Is this set as great as those series? In some cases no. But the vast majority of this music will excite those (like me) who revel in obscure garage bands from the 60's-which is the era when anyone could form a band and-hopefully-make a record. Some of these bands did record full albums, but many didn't-but it doesn't matter. These short stabs of U.S. style garage band 45's are full of attitude and exciting music. If you can't get enough of this kind of music-check this out. Like the title says "A Journey To Tyme" that pretty much says it all. All in all a very nice package. (Amazon)

Thank you Butterboy for this treasure trove of wild garage bands. Your musical tastes are far ranging. A technical problem: winrar can open just 29 of the 85 files, because the file names are too long
