An impressive 5 CD box set featuring one of the most complete anthologies on English folk and folk-rock around. The first two CD's mostly cover solo artists with a praiseworthy attention to the 80's and 90's, while the last three are dedicated to the most important bands of the Seventies. This box set comes in one CD case. The first two disks contain some 'traditional' folk songs sung either with modern arrangements or the usual hand-over-the-ear, howl-like-a-dog mode. There's a lot of good material on these CD's , most of this you'd consider folk music... pastoral, haunting, stirring. Several a capella tracks, including a heart-wrenching "The Flying Cloud" sung by Louis Killen. You get Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick, Albion Band, June Tabor, Ewan MacColl, John Tams, Oak, Tarras, and others.  The remaining three disks are live material by Lindisfarne, Steeleye, Fairport, Renaissance and those hippy-dippy favourites, The Amazing Blondel, plus some studio material from Sandy Denny, Shirley Collins and the Incredible String Band. Overall a very nice set covering a wide variety of the English Folk Artists that have been prominent over the past couple of decades. (Amazon)
