My New Wave set!

VA - The Main Event (K-tel NE 1046 UK) (2022 Remastered Expanded Edition) (1979)      This much acclaimed and highly treasured album was released by K-tel in May 1979 in the UK only. Its focus was 100% on the  current punk and new wave scene at the time and originally contained 16 classic tracks.  I've expanded this 2022 remaster to include another 9 bonus new wave tracks taken from previous K-tel UK albums (all released before this one) to now create a 25 track album, with a new running time of 78:31 CD length.

VA - New Wave - 23 Original Hits - 23 Original Stars (K-tel TS 4070 SCAND) (2022 Remastered Expanded Edition) (1979)      Originally released in Scandinavia only in 1979, this K-tel album was a terrific slice of late 70s new wave. Its focus was 100% on the current punk and new wave scene at the time and originally ontained 16 classic tracks.  I've expanded this 2022 remaster to include another 7 bonus new wave tracks all taken from other 1979 K-tel releases to now create a 23 track album, with a new running time of 79:51 CD length.

VA - Street Level - 20 New Wave Hits (Ronco RTL 2048 UK) (2022 Remastered Expanded Edition) (1980)      Not released by K-tel, but an excellent overview of the UK new wave scene, released by Ronco in the UK only in 1980. The original album featured 20 classic new wave tracks spanning from 1977-1980. For this 2022 expanded edition, I have added another 3 bonus new wave hits taken from a previous UK Ronco compilation album released in 1979, now making a 23 track album with a new CD running time of 78:06.

VA - The History of Rhythm and Blues 1957-1962 [2019] (4 x CD's)

Long deleted box set finally repressed. The History of R&B series of CD's is the first attempt to put together a comprehensive cross-label compilation showcasing the most important and influential records in the rise of Rhythm & Blues. Volume Four takes the story up to the end of 1962. We have defined R&B as the accidental synthesis of jazz, gospel, blues, ragtime, country, pop and Latin into a definable form of black music, influencing all popular music from the 1950's to the present day. Other useful definitions include Robert Palmer's in Rock & Roll: An Unruly History, as 'a catchall rubric used to refer to any music that was made by and for black Americans', or Chip Deffaa's in Blue Rhythms as 'popular music that arose in black communities after the swing era and before the arrival of the Beatles. An exceptional collection. "The Cinema of Serge Gainsbourg Version 2015", revised and expanded 5 CD collection featuring 6 hours of music showcasing the output. This set is complete, precise in its detail, and offers a broad panorama of Gainsbourg's relationship to films through the music he wrote for them.

Between his first venture, L'Eau à la Bouche (A Game for Six Lovers) and Stan the Flasher, composed a year before he died, Gainsbourg never stopped writing for the screen. Was it just an opportunity to get away from the song format? Not really. As a matter of fact, when Gainsbourg was composing for films, the spectre of song was never far away. Actually, film directors sought him out mainly because of what he represented in popular music: they often had a theme-tune in mind, with Gainsbourg as the performer, and to this we owe a few jewels expressly set in the crown of films, like L'Eau à la Bouche, L'Herbe Tendre, Requiem pour un Con, Slogan, Cannabis, Sex-Shop, Dieu Fumeur de Havanes. This may seem like a strange way to listen to a group's legacy, 42 songs on 11 CD platters in a box. It is a bit pricey, as well, but going up four songs at a time with the Animals sort of makes sense, at least as far as distilling down their most successful and interesting work. The group never quite got the hang of making successful albums; that doesn't mean that they didn't do some very good ones, including their two for EMI, but their 12" platter sales never remotely matched the popularity of their nine hit singles from 1964 through 1966.

Their EPs were a different matter, while the group strained in the studio to assemble 40 minutes of attractive listening, their songs made great four-track platters. In England, they issued five extended-play singles, while in France the group saw twice that many issued in their name, both by EMI Records and the Barclay label. The 11 discs in this box (counting the bonus CD single of "San Franciscan Nights" b/w "Good Times") make up their French EP output across three years, each song remastered in state-of-the-art, 24-bit digital audio and sounding most impressive.  Starting with The Animals, containing "House of the Rising Sun," "Talkin' About You" (the official "short" edit), "Gonna Send You Back to Walker," and "Baby Let Me Take You Home," there's a good cross-section of the best work out of just about every group of recording sessions the band ever had -- they never knew how to program an album for mass appeal (especially as they couldn't include any singles on them). The EMI sides are a match in fidelity to the sound on the 24-bit Japanese remasters of the two EMI albums, but the box continues on up past that point to their brief stay with England's Decca Records and Burdon's closing out of the Animals name and eventual formation of Eric Burdon & the Animals.

All of the EMI material, and even a major chunk of the Decca-recorded sides (now owned by B&C Recordings), was upgraded elsewhere by 2003, but not the MCA-owned sides such as "Hey Gyp," "When I Was Young," the mastering of which here makes the quality on Polygram's Best of Eric Burdon & the Animals, 1966-1968 sound like it's mastered off of 45s.  There is one genuine obscurity, "Ain't That So," from their early psychedelic period. The artwork on the individual sleeves is also more interesting than the images on the jackets of either of their EMI LPs, at least until 1966, when the group's lineup became very fluid and Burdon became the focus of the graphics -- and one also gets a good picture of the 1967-vintage group on the bonus disc sleeve. For the last half-century, Arhoolie Records has recorded and released an astounding assortment of folk, blues, Tejano, brass, string band, Cajun, zydeco, sacred steel, and any other type of non-pop music to grateful ears. In honor of the label’s 50th anniversary, head honcho Chris Strachwitz has curated a four-CD set that features his mostly unreleased recordings from the San Francisco Bay area in the 1960's. These recordings are the sound of roots music circa the 1960's in a nutshell. There are blues from well-known artists such as Lightnin’ Hopkins and more obscure players like Jesse Fuller. There’s folk music from Dylan cohort Bob Neuwirth and Debbie Green, and talking blues from Merritt Herring. Louisiana makes an appearance with cuts from the Hackberry Ramblers, John Simien and Clifton Chenier.

The recording settings vary from sessions in Strachwitz’ living room to coffeehouses to folk festivals, which contributes to what is striking about these tracks: their intimacy. When K.C. Douglas and Clarence Van Hook sing the rough-but-right-on harmonies of “I Know You Didn’t Want Me,” it is easy to hear their surprise at how good it sounds and how much fun they are having. When Skip James, one of the more plaintive and eerie bluesmen, sits down at the funky piano in Strachwitz’ house to sing “Low Down Dirty Shame,” the deep feeling behind his music is inescapable. And in some tracks, such depth hits the musicians as strongly as the listeners. When Country Joe and the Fish’s 1965 spasm/hokum band version of “I Feel Like I’m Fixin’ to Die Rag” comes on, you can hear the band realizing how much conviction they have behind this song, and how it could become the anthem.

On some songs, the guitars or pianos are not fully tuned and some voices warble in the melodies, but this rawness elevates the music. In addition, the CD's come with a book of essays about the musicians and their circumstances, illustrated with great candid pictures of the players and the scenes in which they flourished.
