My friend Jose over at his excellent blog Tommentón En La Cuadra recently posted L.A. Gemstones: The Rock Box (1964–1969), a fantastic 5-CD set packed with vintage West Coast garage, psych, and fuzz. This set originally appeared around 2010-2011 on the now-defunct blog crystalsphere1, and it was actually part of a larger two-part project: The Rock Box and The Pop Box, each five CD sets. I’ve had both archived for years, and seeing Jose revive The Rock Box inspired me to dust off the companion set and share it here.

So, here’s my contribution: VA- L.A. Gemstones: The Pop Box [2010], featuring 144 groovy pop tracks that capture the melodic, harmony-rich side of the L.A. scene.  This sprawling set is a kaleidoscopic journey through L.A.’s pop underground and sunshine sound, spanning the golden years of 1964 to the early ’70s. It’s packed with mono 45s, needledrops, and deep cuts that balance chart charm with cult mystique. You’ll hear surf-pop from The Survivors and The Rip Chords, garage sparkle from The Hondells and Fantastic Baggys, and harmony-rich gems from The Association, Harper’s Bizarre, and The Yellow Balloon.

There’s a strong presence of West Coast auteurs, Van Dyke Parks, Curt Boettcher, and Roger Nichols, whose baroque arrangements and lyrical eccentricity give the set its emotional depth. Psychedelic pop is threaded throughout, from Sagittarius and Strawberry Alarm Clock to obscure acts like Chocolate Tunnel and Storybook.

Major artists like Elvis, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, and The Byrds appear in lesser-known forms, while cult figures like Tim Buckley, Gene Clark, and Fred Neil add introspective weight. It’s a lovingly sequenced listen for big ears, curious, melodic, and full of surprises.

Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 - April 21, 2016) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. Regarded as one of the most influential musicians of his generation, Prince was known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona, wide vocal rang, which included a far-reaching falsetto—and high-pitched screams, as well as his skill as a multi-instrumentalist, often preferring to play all or most of the instruments on his recordings. His music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, disco, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, blues, and hip hop. Prince produced his albums himself, pioneering the Minneapolis sound.

Prince has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards include the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000.

City Lights is an 11-CD unofficial box set released in 1995 by Superhero Records, documenting Prince’s live performances from 1980 to 1986. Though not sanctioned by Prince or Warner Bros., this collection has become a coveted item among collectors and fans, offering a rare and comprehensive glimpse into the artist’s formative touring years. Sourced primarily from soundboard recordings, the set captures Prince’s evolution from a provocative funk upstart to a commanding global icon, all through the lens of his electrifying stage presence.

Each disc in City Lights represents a specific concert from a pivotal tour, beginning with the Rick James Tour in Atlanta (1980), where Prince was still an opening act, and culminating in the Parade Tour in Stockholm (1986), by which time he had become a fully realized auteur. Along the way, the set includes performances from the Dirty Mind Tour (New York and Paris, 1981), Controversy Tour (Columbia and Saginaw, 1981-82), 1999 Tour (Detroit and Providence, 1982-83), and the Purple Rain Tour (Atlanta, 1985). These recordings are not just concert souvenirs, they are sonic snapshots of Prince’s artistic metamorphosis.

The Dirty Mind shows are particularly raw and riveting, with stripped-down arrangements and sexually charged lyrics that challenged norms and pushed boundaries. These shows also mark the emergence of The Revolution as a cohesive unit, adding depth and texture to the live arrangements.

The centerpiece of the box is arguably the Purple Rain Tour recording from Atlanta. Here, Prince is at the height of his commercial powers, delivering theatrical renditions of “Let’s Go Crazy,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and the title track with a mix of precision and abandon. The crowd interaction, guitar solos, and emotional crescendos make this disc a standout.

Jackson Browne, the complete Golden Slumbers fan compilation, which is an excellent rarities and live recordings compilation.
This is a great set that brings together many bits & pieces, duets, live performances, radio sessions, one-of-a-kind moments, and miscellaneous rarities from throughout Jackson's career, including many one-off performances from various charity and benefit shows and rare backing vocal stints with others. It also includes a couple full-length live shows. But the main thing that makes this set so great is the superb sound quality of the bulk of the recordings. This is just an excellent sounding collection. Enjoy!

I am something of a completest in the sense that, once I start buying a series of something, I usually feel some sort of mild compulsion to own the whole set. I always think I might be missing something great of I don't get every volume. After buying the "Mood Mosaic" series I wasn't disappointed. Each of the Mood Mosaic volumes have a quite a few great tracks and large amounts of what sound like "B' sides or filler cuts on them.  The sound is good on every cut and the disc is well enough filled that there's no question of value. So....if you woke up this morning thinking, gosh, I wish I could find a Crime Lounge CD filled with mostly nondescript B movie chase scene music, this might be just your cup of tea...

Each volume in this great Mood Mosaic series, is themed that focuses on those thematic sounds. Listen to Jazz-Funk, Easy Listening, Pop Rock, Latin Jazz, Soul-Jazz, Psychedelic, Lounge, Soul-Jazz, Jazz, Latin, Swing, Cool Jazz, Big Band, Funk, Pop Rock, Soul, Afrobeat, House, Disco & Soundtrack.
