VA - The Official UK Top 50 Singles Chart: 01 September 1973 - 7 September 1973 (50th Anniversary 2023 Remastered Edition) [1973] (3 x CDs)

K SPECIAL PART 9 of 12

VA - The Official UK Top 50 Singles Chart: 01 September 1973 - 7 September 1973 (50th Anniversary 2023 Remastered Edition) [1973] (3 x CDs)

1973 was a stellar year for music, particularly in the UK where so many great singles were released, and a perfect opportunity to celebrate 50 years since so many legendary songs graced the charts.  Acts like David Bowie, Gary Glitter, the Sweet, Slade, the Carpenters and Wizzard would have the best chart years of their careers. Teenybop stuff was alive and well with David Cassidy and The Osmonds peaking.

Plus, lots of new acts like Mud, David Essex, Suzi Quatro, Medicine Head and, erm, Barry Blue came through.

Tony Orlando and Dawn had the best-selling single of 1973 with "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree", which spent four weeks at the top spot and lasted 11 weeks in the top 10.  Slade became the first act to have three singles enter the UK charts at number-one; "Cum On Feel the Noize", "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me", and "Merry Xmas Everybody" (which also became the year's Christmas number-one single).

The glam-rock group had two further singles in the UK top 10 this year. They also reached number two in October with their single "My Friend Stan". They had five entries in total this year, but this included "Gudbuy T'Jane" from the latter part of 1972.

Another glam-rock band who made it big in 1973 was Wizzard, fronted by Roy Wood. Wood had previously achieved chart success as a member of both The Move and Electric Light Orchestra. Wizzard scored four top 10 singles during the year, which included the number-one hits "See My Baby Jive" and "Angel Fingers", as well as their Christmas classic "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday", which peaked at number four for four consecutive weeks.  10cc achieved the first of their three UK number-one singles in June of this year with "Rubber Bullets", which spent one week at the top spot. They also reached number ten in September with "The Dean and I".

One-hundred and twenty-eight singles were in the top ten in 1973. Eight singles from 1972 remained in the top 10 for several weeks at the beginning of the year, while "The Show Must Go On" by Leo Sayer and "You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me" by

The New Seekers featuring Lyn Paul were both released in 1973 but did not reach their peak until 1974. "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues, "Shotgun Wedding" by Roy C and "Solid Gold Easy Action" by T. Rex were the singles from 1972 to reach their peak in 1973. Twenty-nine artists scored multiple entries in the top 10 in 1973. David Essex, Leo Sayer, Marie Osmond, Mud and Wizzard were among the many artists who achieved their first UK charting top 10 single in 1973.The 1972 Christmas number-one, "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" by Little Jimmy Osmond, remained at number-one for the first three weeks of 1973. The first new number-one single of the year was "Block Buster!" by The Sweet.  Overall, seventeen different singles peaked at number-one in 1973, with Slade (3) having the most singles hit that position.

Twenty-nine artists scored multiple entries in the top 10 in 1973. Donny Osmond secured the record for most top 10 hits in 1973 with six hit singles. He scored three top 10 entries in 1973 as a solo artist, with "The Twelfth of Never" and "Young Love" both reaching number-one, and "When I Fall in Love" peaking at number four in November. His sister Marie made her top 10 debut in November with the number two hit "Paper Roses". Donny's total was boosted to six by his participation on The Osmonds recordings. The family group scored two top 10 entries in 1973 with "Going Home", which peaked at number four in July and "Let Me In", which peaked at number two in November. Their number two hit from November 1972, "Crazy Horses", remained in the top 10 for the first three weeks of 1973.

David Bowie peaked in the top 10 with five singles in 1973. He reached number two in January with "The Jean Genie", while "Drive In Saturday", "Life on Mars" and "Sorrow" all peaked at number three. His single "The Laughing Gnome", originally released in 1967, also entered the top 10, reaching number six in October. Little Jimmy Osmond had two individual entries, including "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" from 1972 and his number four single "Tweedle Dee" in April, as well as being a part of The Osmonds collective.

David Cassidy and Gary Glitter scored four top 10 entries in 1973. The Partridge Family singer David Cassidy had two hit singles as part of the group - "Looking Through the Eyes of Love" at number nine and "Walking in the Rain" peaking at number ten - as well as the number one hit "Daydreamer"/"The Puppy Song", and "I am a Clown"/"Some Kind of a Summer" which reached number three. Gary Glitter's first two entries, "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" and "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again", both peaked at number two, while the remaining two, "I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)" and "I Love You Love Me Love", both spent four weeks at number-one.

Solo artists Suzi Quatro, Barry Blue and David Essex all made their top 10 debut in 1973, and all three scored a second entry later in the year. Suzi Quatro made her top 10 debut in May with "Can the Can", which spent a week at number-one in June, while "48 Crash" peaked at number three in August. Barry Blue made his top 10 debut in August with "Dancing on a Saturday Night", which peaked at number two, while "Do You Wanna Dance" reached number seven in November. David Essex made his top 10 debut in September with "Rock On", which peaked at number three, while "Lamplight" reached number seven in December.

The Sweet had three top-ten entries, among these chart-topper "Block Buster!". The other artists with three top 10 singles were 10cc, Elton John, Paul McCartney, T. Rex and Wings.  Gilbert O'Sullivan was one of a number of artists with two top-ten entries, including the number-one single "Get Down". Alice Cooper, The Carpenters, The Partridge Family, Rod Stewart, Roxy Music and Status Quo were among the other artists who had multiple top 10 entries in 1973.

Here is the ninth part of my month-by-month series featuring classic top 50 UK singles charts from selected weeks in 1973.

BBC Radio 1 also introduced a new logo in 1973 which is featured on the cover art above.

This 3CD set contains many rare and extremely hard to find tracks, with quite a few featured in their original 7" single versions and edits. Only the original studio mixes are included. No later remixes, re-recordings, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here!  Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters, with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

I hope you are enjoying this ongoing series and have had the opportunity to revisit a few old favourites and long forgotten hits.

VA - Time Machine A Vertigo Retrospective [2005] CD1 + CD2 + CD3

VA - Time Machine A Vertigo Retrospective [2005] CD1 + CD2 + CD3

Whoever signed bands for Vertigo back in the late 60s and early 70s had incredible discretion and good taste. Colloseum, Atlantis, Cresseda, and Yes, even the mighty Sabbath made some fantastically advanced music, sampled on Time Machine.

This boxset really is a Time Machine: No Demographics, no labels, no test-marketing, no boundaries. Rock, Jazz, Classical and Blues are all molded by each band on this set, but in ways very unique to each band. The idea in music then was to outdo the other bands, but by doing something very different, and doing it very well. You will never mistake one band or another here. You will also find very little self-indulgence or meandering in any of this music. This music is "prog" defined by jazz and blues, not quasi-classical jazz.

Time Machine is a fascinating look at an equally fascinating time in music, containing 41 tracks from the first golden age of the Vertigo label including rare and classic tracks from the likes of Aphrodite's Child, Black Sabbath, Colosseum, Gentle Giant, Jade Warrior and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.  Whether you are a fan of Psychedelia or Prog Rock, there's something here to excite your senses.  A vital collection that rightfully takes its place next to other classic compilations like "Nuggets", "Atlantic Gold" or "Freakbeat Scene". VA - The Rarest Rockabilly Album Ever! Volumes 1 & 2 [2019] (4 x CD's)

RARE ROCKABILLY
Previously posted October 25, 2019

VA - The Rarest Rockabilly Album Ever!  Volumes 1 & 2 [2019] (4 x CD's)

The earliest known form of what has become Rock music, Rockabilly was around as early as 1951, and throughout that decade was a hugely popular genre. The style waned somewhat during the 1960s, but by the late 70s a revival of epic proportions was in evidence. The style has remained enormously influential ever since, and artists as diverse as Stray Cats, The Cramps, Chris Isaak, Reverend Horton Heat and Brian Setzer s Big Band have kept the flag flying commercially for what has become a sub-culture all of its own, with a cult-following equal to those of Punk, Ska and Mod. The ongoing popularity of this enduring style of music has bought with it the customary collector s scene, and although there remains a wealth of obscure 45s from the 1950s just waiting to be discovered by both the aging fan inspired by the form s first wave and the alternative young rocker, the vast majority of these records, largely released on tiny American labels, remain enormously hard to locate and, when discoveries are made, hugely expensive to purchase. This collection brings together fifty such Rockabilly gems, many of which have never before been released on CD. All the tracks are as rare as a nun in a bikini, as sought after as Bin Laden, and will prove a pure delight for every collector in existence. Completed with deluxe packaging and extensive sleevenotes, this set is what every Rockabilly fan has been waiting years to own.

This 2-CD set lives up to it's name, rounding up rockabilly rarities that fetch huge sums on vinyl and, in many cases, have never been on CD. These date from 1956-59: Alley Cat Walter Brown; Solid Rock Jimmie John; So Tired Chavis Brothers; Speed Limit Tommy Lam; Big Door Gene Brown; Hot Rod Baby Rocky Davis; Go Cat Go Bill Flagg; Cool Baby Lee Cole; I Need It Ray McCoy; Big Sandy Bobby Roberts; Annie Mae Bob Dewitt; That Big Old Moon Buddy Burke; Coming Up Mike Wagoner, and more vintage red-hot rockabilly!

Following the success of sister volume 'The Rarest Rockabilly Album Volume 1', comes a second compilation of 50 of the rarest tracks from the genre that is more popular today than it was when the records included here were first released. Indeed, it was this lack of success at the time which today makes the original 45s of the cuts which make up this collection so rare, and in most cases have never before been released on CD. This collection of the obscure serves to introduce the enthusiasts everywhere to a world of previously unheard Rockabilly gems. (Amazon)

There are songs that were recorded for radio shows or commercials, such as “I Love You Because” and “Pepsi-Cola”. There are songs that were never issued on singles or albums, such as “I’m Gonna Make My Home a Million Miles from Here” and “I’m With a Crowd But So Alone”. These tracks offer a glimpse into Tubb’s personality and work ethic, as well as his experimentation with different sounds and styles.

The box set comes with extensive liner notes, session notes, and photographs that provide insight into Tubb’s life and career. The liner notes are written by Rich Kienzle, a renowned country music historian and journalist. They give a detailed account of Tubb’s biography, achievements, challenges, and legacy. The session notes list the dates, locations, musicians, producers, and engineers involved in each recording. They reveal the behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes that add to the appreciation of the songs. The photographs are taken from various sources, such as magazines, newspapers, albums, posters, and personal collections. They capture Tubb’s charisma, charm, and character on stage and off stage.

The box set, Ernest Tubb - The Yellow Rose Of Texas (1954-1960) [1995], is a must-have for any fan of Ernest Tubb or classic country music. It is a comprehensive and definitive collection of his music that showcases his artistry and legacy. It is also a testament to his enduring influence and relevance in the country music scene. As Kienzle writes in the liner notes: “Ernest Tubb was more than just another country singer. He was an institution.” (B)

VA - California Dreamin' Jazz Exotica [1999]

JAZZ EXOTICA

VA - California Dreamin' Jazz Exotica [1999]

This is another thematic Impulse compilation assembled by Patrick Forge and Kerstan Mackness. Like its sister project, Transcendence: Impulse in the Spiritual Groove, this one centers around the wild sonic textures in the slinky, exotic music being produced in California from the late '50s through the mid-'60s for the label. Where Transcendence centered itself around contributions from Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, California Dreamin': Jazz Exotica does the same with Bill Plummer and Gabor Szabo. Both men issued incredibly experimental music that, while firmly in the jazz camp, flirted dangerously with lounge and pop sounds -- often going over the edge. Both were great innovators, particularly Szabo, whose Sorcerer album is an Impulse classic. Szabo utilized Indian and other Far Eastern instrumentation in his tunes, covering the pop hits of the day and writing in that vernacular, but always leaving plenty of room in his multi-textured compositions for unexpected improvisation. The tracks "Sophisticated Wheels" from Jazz Raga, from which two tracks are taken; the title track from Spellbinder; and "Gypsy Queen" from the same album illustrate this well with their use of tablas, sitars, and fuzzed-out Tibetan temple bells. Another classically wack track comes in the form of "Bliss" from Emil Richards and the Microtonal Blues Band. The dueling marimbas are almost too much to bear, but they move so fluidly and intricately that it is difficult not to be overcome with awe for the playing. Other musicians who appear are somewhat unexpected: Chico Hamilton, Dave Mackay and Vicky Hamilton, Gary McFarland, and Tom Scott round out the collection. Scott and Szabo end up on lots of other tracks as well: Scott was part of Plummer's The Cosmic Brotherhood and Szabo was a member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet. While not as overwhelmingly consistent as Transcendence, there is plenty here to recommend. This is another well-realized project for the Forge/Mackness team. (AMG review by Thom Jurek)

BIRDS DO IT!

VA - Birds Do It, (Everything You Ever Wanted to Hear From 'Oswalt Kolle' and Other Sex-Education-Movies of the 1960s and 70s) [2002]

30 years after the last movie of Germany's leading sex-educator Oswalt Kolle was shown in the German cinemas, we now present a never before available comprehensive compilation to this cinematic phenomenon: the sex-education-movie. This compilation contains the best tunes from the Oswalt Kolle movies and his rip-offs which have been made in the years 1967 to 1973.

The CD contains 20 catchy tracks, nearly all of them previously unreleased, which show the entire stylistic range of the ending 60s and arising 70s: big-band-soul, easy listening, dirt-rock, funk guitars, lounge jazz and orgiastic psychedelic beats answer all "sound questions" the Germans were afraid to ask.  Besides Heinz Kiessling, the leading composer of the Oswalt Kolle - movies, such well-known artists as Peter Schirmann, Kristian Schultze or Maurice Pop delivered stylish sounds for naked facts.

While not as casual cool or professional slick like the Italian composers, this is one of the best of German film library collections. You get it all, nearly every genre of the 1960s' from easy listening to kitschy cooing to swinging jazz to spy themes to psychedelic rock. More importantly, it's all done with great fun. I have no idea what the original films looked like but if the soundtrack matches it in fun - man, those crazy swinging Germans. (Amazon)
