VA - Blue Note Plays Bossa Nova [2008] (3 x CDs)

BOSSA NOVA

VA - Blue Note Plays Bossa Nova [2008] (3 x CDs)

Blue Note Plays Bossa Nova (2008) is an elegant 3-CD set released by Blue Note Records, celebrating the fusion of jazz and Brazilian rhythm that defined the bossa nova movement. This expanded collection offers a deep dive into the smooth, syncopated grooves that made bossa nova one of the most sophisticated jazz subgenres. The set brings together a stunning roster of artists, including Lou Rawls, Hank Mobley, Cannonball Adderley, Nancy Wilson, Lee Morgan, Duke Pearson, Grant Green, Ike Quebec, and Kenny Dorham. Their performances capture the essence of bossa nova’s delicate interplay of melody and rhythm, blending cool jazz phrasing with the effortless swing of Brazilian beats. From Stanley Turrentine’s silky saxophone runs to Dexter Gordon’s relaxed yet captivating style, this compilation showcases how American jazz musicians reinterpreted bossa nova’s sensibilities.

What sets this release apart are the rare tracks tucked within the collection. Donald Byrd’s version of “Black Orpheus” stands out, offering a more expansive take on the classic theme. Lesser-known gems such as “Ontem A Noite” by The Jazz Crusaders and “Chega De Saudade” by Eliane Elias provide fresh angles on the genre, balancing traditional Brazilian compositions with modern jazz flourishes. The inclusion of original tape masters enhances the listening experience, preserving the warmth and authenticity of the original recordings.

Beyond the music, this expanded edition serves as a testament to the effortless synergy between jazz and bossa nova, reflecting an era when cross-cultural experimentation led to timeless artistry. Whether revisiting iconic classics or uncovering hidden gems, Blue Note Plays Bossa Nova offers a captivating journey through the genre’s evolution. Enjoy this smooth, sophisticated journey through the intersection of jazz and Brazilian rhythm (B)

VA - Bossa Jazz, The Birth Of Hard Bossa Samba Jazz And The Evolution Of Brazilian Fusion 1962-73 [2011] (2 x CDs)

BOSSA JAZZ

VA - Bossa Jazz, The Birth Of Hard Bossa Samba Jazz And The Evolution Of Brazilian Fusion 1962-73  [2011] (2 x CDs)

This double album features many of the great Brazilian jazz bossa groups involved in the bossa nova explosion of the early 1960s. The amazing, hard driving music, played by these groups who backed the famous bossa nova singers of the day – Elis Regina, Jorge Ben, João Gilberto – became known as hard bossa or samba jazz. Sergio Mendes, Raul de Souza, Airto Moreira, Deodato, Edu Lobo - all of these artists started their careers here – all pioneering, creative musicians who defined a musical genre.

By the end of the 1960s an exodus of Brazilian musicians to the United States led to the subsequent emergence of Brazilian jazz fusion in the USA in the early 1970s. Brazilians such as Sergio Mendes, Deodato, João Donato – all of whom were integral to the earlier bossa nova scene – began to collaborate with their counterpart American jazz players, such as Airto Moreira joining the Miles Davis electric group and Dom um Romao joining Weather Report. This album tells the story of this musical journey – an essential key to understanding the link between 1960s bossa nova and the Brazilian fusion that emerged in the USA in the 1970s.

This compilation from Soul Jazz contains about 100 minutes of music over two CDs. The Bossa Jazz selections from about 1962 to 1968 are largely fantastic: cool bossa nova grooves complemented by piano or guitar sometimes supplemented by breezy flute, sax, trumpet, trombone or full horn section; all really good stuff. Absolutely killer tunes throughout! (Amazon)

BOSSA NOVA

VA - Bosa Nova, Bossa Nova And The Rise Of Brazilian Music In The 1960s [2011] (2 x CDs)

This 2011 compilation album released by Soul Jazz Records titled Bossa Nova (subtitled: Bossa Nova and the Rise of Brazilian Music in the 1960s) is a solid bossa comp which includes the major players and strikes a nice balance between the familiar and the more obscure.

Building a Brazilian music CD collection can be a serious pain in the ass as most albums are expensive imports and/or out-of-print. Thankfully we have labels like Soul Jazz making great compilations, this compilation covers Bossa Nova and Brazilian music from the 60s before the Tropicalia movement, and this one is just as essential. Two full discs of great Brazilian music from most of the big names of that era, just wonderful tunes that are quite chill and never lacking in richness. Brazilian music is often ignored by lots of music fans, but once you get into it you quickly realize that it's an absolute gold mine and one of the most important countries especially in that era. The Bossa Nova selections are top notch and also includes a 76-page booklet telling the history of the country's music and other stuff, it's definitely worth every penny and Soul Jazz remains on top when it comes to compilations/reissues.

A solid bossa comp which includes the major players and strikes a nice balance between the familiar and the more obscure (RYM)

VA - Bossa Nova (A Butterboy Compilation) + VA - Italian Bossa (A Butterboy Compilation) (3 x CD's) REPOST

BOSSA NOVA

VA - Bossa Nova (A Butterboy Compilation) + VA - Italian Bossa (A Butterboy Compilation) (3 x CD's)

Bossa nova is a style of Brazilian music, which was developed and popularized in the 1950's and 1960's and is today one of the best-known Brazilian music styles abroad. The phrase bossa nova means literally "new trend" or "new wave". A lyrical fusion of samba and jazz, bossa nova acquired a large following in the 1960's, initially among young musicians and college students.

Bossa nova is most commonly performed on the nylon-string classical guitar, played with the fingers rather than with a pick. Its purest form could be considered unaccompanied guitar with vocals, as created, pioneered, and exemplified by João Gilberto. Even in larger, jazz-like arrangements for groups, there is almost always a guitar that plays the underlying rhythm. According to Brazilian musician Paulo Bitencourt, João Gilberto, known for his eccentricity and obsessed by the idea of finding a new way of playing the guitar, often locked himself in the bathroom, where he played one and the same chord for many hours in a row.

Bossa nova has at its core a rhythm based on samba. Samba combines the rhythmic patterns and feel originating in former African slave communities. Samba's emphasis on the second beat carries through to bossa nova (to the degree that it is often notated in 2/4 time). However, unlike samba, bossa nova doesn't have dance steps to accompany it. When played on the guitar, in a simple one-bar pattern, the thumb plays the bass notes on 1 and 2, while the fingers pluck the chords in unison on the two eighth notes of beat one, followed by the second sixteenth note of beat two. Two-measure patterns usually contain a syncopation into the second measure. Overall, the rhythm has a "swaying" feel rather than the "swinging" feel of jazz.  (Wikipedia)

Before American pop music openly took cues from the rest of the world, bossa nova changed how the country thought about international music. The reflective genre flipped the jazz world on its head, blending the rhythms of Brazilian samba with the storied traditions established across decades of jazz history. The style also came to inform the pop landscape of the 1950s and ‘60s, bubbling up into the mainstream through the curiosity of popular jazz musicians like guitarist Charlie Byrd and saxophonist Stan Getz, whose collaborative 1962 album Jazz Samba provided a lite and picturesque alternative to the rock and roll of its time. Perhaps the biggest hit of the era, “The Girl from Ipanema” has become an inescapable part of the American songbook—jazz, pop, or otherwise. (www.vice.com)
