SOURCE NOTES: The audio was taken from a 35 mm Cinemascope 4-track magnetic striped print of live at Pompeii featuring the quadraphonic mix (l, r, ls, rs.4 corners"). This format used the same 4-channel magnetic audio tracks but not in the intended standard l, c, rs configuration. This 4 corners quad format was briefly used in the early to mid 1970'sfor more music focused films. The only theaters equipped for the non-standard audio format were in New York & Los Angeles

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: in 1974, associate producer Phil Borack (whose company April fools films handled distribution of the film in the United States) and director Adrian Maben visited Los Angeles for the purpose of finding someone to produce a quadraphonic mix of the film's original multi-tracks. Dan Wallin, who received an Oscar nomination 4 years earlier for his work on Woodstock was appointed for this task. The mix was done in discrete quad, the multi-tracks were mixed to mag at A&M record studios, and then the mags were taken over to Todd-AO where the final mix was done. The quad mix was featured in selected screenings of the film but has never seen the light of day since then. Pink Floyd was never involved with the quad mix and it's possible that they're completely unaware of its existence.  

Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is a 1972 concert documentary film directed by Adrian Maben and featuring the English rock group Pink Floyd performing at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy. Although the band perform a typical live set from the era, there is no audience beyond the basic film crew. The main footage in and around the amphitheater was filmed over four days (4th, 5th, 6th and 7th) in October 1971, using the band's regular touring equipment, including a mobile 8-track recorder from Paris (before being bumped up to 16-track in post-production). Additional footage filmed in a Paris television studio the following December was added for the original 1972 release. The film was then re-released in 1974 with additional studio material of the band working on The Dark Side of the Moon, and interviews at Abbey Road Studios. The film has subsequently been released on video numerous times, and in 2002, a Director's cut DVD appeared which combined the original footage from 1971 with more contemporary shots of space and the area around Pompeii, assembled by Maben. A number of bands have taken inspiration from the film in creating their own videos, or filming concerts without an audience. (Wikipedia)

This boxset of Quadrophonic & original stereo mixes collection was release by Archive Records in 2018 in Deluxe Edition, Limited Edition, Unofficial  and limited to 300 copies. This collection: brings together 4 different mixes of Pink Floyd legendary Pompeii concert and the sound quality is astonishing. CD one includes the quadraphonic film mix. CD two & three contain the front and rear speakers separated & disc four includes the film's original stereo mix.

In fact, the title really does say it all: this compilation allows the listener to experience An Alternate History of Popular Music, taking us from 1959 (with the invention of the blues by a woman named Niela Miller, all the way to 1985, the year that disc died with this swan-song track by Golden Echoes. If those names aren't familiar to you, don't worry. The music in between is just as, if not more-so, unheard of.

The beauty of The Numero Group releases is their careful selection. While the artists may be unfamiliar, these tracks embody the zeitgeist of the era in a way that feels entirely appropriate. You can picture this history unfolding, as black artists dominate the charts, while later white artists integrate into this form of music. Baroque pop (sometimes called baroque rock) is a fusion genre that combines rock music with particular elements of classical music. It emerged in the mid 1960s as artists pursued a majestic, orchestral sound and is identifiable for its appropriation of Baroque compositional styles (contrapuntal melodies and functional harmony patterns) and dramatic or melancholic gestures. Harpsichords figure prominently, while oboes, French horns, and string quartets are also common.  Although harpsichords had been deployed for a number of pop hits since the 1940's, starting in the 1960's, some record producers increasingly placed the instrument in the foreground of their arrangements.  Inspired partly by the Beatles' song "In My Life" (1965), various groups were incorporating baroque and classical instrumentation by early 1966. The term "baroque rock" was coined in promotional material for the Left Banke, who used harpsichords and violins in their arrangements and whose 1966 song "Walk Away Renée" exemplified the style.  Baroque pop's mainstream popularity faded by the 1970's, partially because punk rock, disco and hard rock took over; nonetheless, music was still produced within the genre's tradition. Philadelphia soul in the 1970's and chamber pop in the 1990's both incorporated the spirit of baroque pop while the latter contested much of the time's low fidelity musical aesthetic.  (Wikipedia)

Baroque pop is to pop music what progressive rock is to rock music. Its more complex forms and song structures involve ambitious movements and varied instrumentation. The term ‘baroque pop’ originated in 1960's music journalism, referring to a trend of using harpsichord in pop songs.

Hubert Sumlin - Wake Up Call [1998]          Hubert Sumlin is an electric guitar pioneer, largely responsible for the sound of many modern guitar players. Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Bob Weir, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana and many other critically acclaimed musicians consider Sumlin a major influence on their playing. Clapton proved his respect by refusing to do the Chess Records London Howlin' Wolf Sessions unless Hubert was present. "The Red Rooster", "Backdoor Man", "Shake for Me", "Killing Floor", "Smokestack Lightnin" and "Sittin' on Top of the World" are songs you may recognize from cover versions by Cream, The Doors, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, or The Rolling Stones. Pinetop Perkins - The Complete High Tone Sessions [1998]          Pinetop Perkins' Heritage of the Blues: The Complete Hightone Sessions is a welcome if strange reissue. In a sense, none of the tracks here have been issued before -- at least not in this form. These sessions took place over two years in the Octobers of 1996 and 1997 in Chicago. There are 15 tracks here, including Perkins classic originals such as "Down in Mississippi," "Take It Easy Baby," "Song for Sunnyland," "Big Fat Mama," "Little Girl, Little Girl," and others. Yes, "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie" is here, too. Unaccompanied, Perkins runs through these tunes in an intimate and utterly compelling manner, turning the middle eights into wondrously dexterous right-hand workouts, and his voice is still in fine shape here. What is so strange is that some of these tunes are recorded on an electric piano, making them sound tinny, reedy, and oddly more home-style than barrelhouse. Even so, Perkins' trademark slippery right hand is in fine supply here, as are his strange, open-ended, and extrapolated chords. It's a gentle workout, one that is as laid-back as it is articulate and soulful, but this is a different side of Perkins, one that balances out the profile of a giant and master. Despite the weird timbres, Heritage of the Blues is a fine and even essential Perkins recording to own. (AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek)

If you love the blues...especially on piano, you can't go wrong with Pinetop Perkins. He is one of the best that ever lived.  Pinetop Perkins is absolutely amazing. His music has a ton of energy. His passing is a truly a great loss.

Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith - Bag Full of Blues [1995]          The former Muddy Waters drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith turns in an enjoyable, but unremarkable, set of Chicago blues with Bag Full of Blues. Supported by Pinetop Perkins and Fabulous Thunderbirds harpist Kim Wilson, Smith runs through a set of mid-tempo blues, combining some competent originals with covers like "Baby Please Don't Go." There are not many solos - Wilson mainly shines, while guitarists James Wheeler, Nick Moss, and Gareth Best all contribute small, pithy leads -- but the grooves are nice and relaxed. Bag Full of Blues may not be a jaw-dropper, but it does have some fine moments. (AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine)

Featuring Kim Wilson on harmonica and Pinetop Perkins on piano. Willie played drums with Muddy Waters for 15 years, putting the beat behind many blues classics, and later founded the Legendary Blues Band. He is also an accomplished vocalist. Smith...walks the fine line between Muddy Waters and Paul Butterfield, and...re-defines how Chicago blues should sound.

Sidemen: Long Road To Glory is an award-winning documentary film about the lives, legacies and music of bluesmen Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith.  An exceptional documentary about some of the greatest unsung heroes of the music world, whose influence extends far beyond the blues. 

This is an obvious labor of love for three extraordinary sidemen, that received their turn in the spotlight in their twilight years. Pinetop Perkins on piano, Willie Big Eyes Smith on drums and Hubert Sumlin on guitar all worked with Muddy Waters, although Sumlin spent most of his sideman career with Howlin' Wolf. Here each man gets his just due and Perkins and Smith receive a Grammy for their duo CD.  Sadly, during production, all three men passed away within months of each other. So we are left with this documentary as an excellent memory of what they brought to the blues. 

After realizing how talented and influential these “Sidemen” were, their relative obscurity seems even more tragic. Hubert Sumlin, in particular, who seems like a shoe-in for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, hasn’t even been nominated despite his incredible contributions to the sound and style of generations of blues and rock and roll artists.  Overall, the film is beautifully shot, the story is well-told, the main characters are portrayed beautifully, and Mark Maron’s narration is excellent. This is a film every music fan ought to see. An essential music documentary. (Amazon)

Baroque pop (sometimes called baroque rock) is a fusion genre that combines rock music with particular elements of classical music. It emerged in the mid 1960s as artists pursued a majestic, orchestral sound and is identifiable for its appropriation of Baroque compositional styles (contrapuntal melodies and functional harmony patterns) and dramatic or melancholic gestures. Harpsichords figure prominently, while oboes, French horns, and string quartets are also common.  Although harpsichords had been deployed for a number of pop hits since the 1940's, starting in the 1960's, some record producers increasingly placed the instrument in the foreground of their arrangements.  Inspired partly by the Beatles' song "In My Life" (1965), various groups were incorporating baroque and classical instrumentation by early 1966. The term "baroque rock" was coined in promotional material for the Left Banke, who used harpsichords and violins in their arrangements and whose 1966 song "Walk Away Renée" exemplified the style.  Baroque pop's mainstream popularity faded by the 1970's, partially because punk rock, disco and hard rock took over; nonetheless, music was still produced within the genre's tradition. Philadelphia soul in the 1970's and chamber pop in the 1990's both incorporated the spirit of baroque pop while the latter contested much of the time's low fidelity musical aesthetic.  (Wikipedia)

Baroque pop is to pop music what progressive rock is to rock music. Its more complex forms and song structures involve ambitious movements and varied instrumentation. The term ‘baroque pop’ originated in 1960's music journalism, referring to a trend of using harpsichord in pop songs.

World Party - Arkeology [2012] (5 x CD's)

World Party are a British musical group, which is essentially the solo project of its sole member, Karl Wallinger. He started the band in 1986 in London after leaving the Waterboys. Wallinger is one of the best kept secrets in the music industry. He is not amazingly prolific, but the quality of his work is great! We need more like him! This set brings together all the unreleased and obscure tracks. Fantastic Beatles covers. Karl Wallinger/World Party is one of the most underappreciated artists in the world. 

Arkeology is a compilation album by World Party released on April 10, 2012.  The album is composed almost entirely of previously unreleased material: 70 tracks including new songs finished as recently as 2011, plus an "unheard history of rare studio gems, live sessions, concert recordings, radio interviews, covers, demos and B-sides." Sure, there is the obvious Beatles influence including a handful of Beatles' covers, but Wallinger is quite his own man too and these songs all resonate with his distinctive musical touch.

This compilation is not simply b-sides and outtakes--it's a great snapshot of a variety of styles and feelings from the wonderfully inventive idea that is World Party. Glad to know that he didn't simply rely on his old standbys for this release, it's a treasure trove of tidbits that are a must have for any World Party fan. All performances are great and the joy of discovering this huge part of music will be continuing for a long time.  This is a musical treasure chest. (Amazon)

Doo-wop (also spelled doowop and doo wop) is a genre of rhythm and blues music that originated among African-American youth in the 1940's, mainly in the large cities of the United States, including New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Newark, Detroit, and Washington, DC. It features vocal group harmony that carries an engaging melodic line to a simple beat with little or no instrumentation. Lyrics are simple, usually about love, sung by a lead vocal over background vocals, and often featuring, in the bridge, a melodramatically heartfelt recitative addressed to the beloved. Harmonic singing of nonsense syllables (such as “doo-wop”) is a common characteristic of these songs. Gaining popularity in the 1950's, doo-wop enjoyed its peak successes in the early 1960's, but continued to influence performers in other genres. (Wikipedia)

Here is a great collection of extremely rare doo-wop tunes from black artists/groups. There are 1490 tracks on 50 CD's and I am betting that there are hundreds of tracks you won't find anywhere else.The front cover indicates this was a limited production of only  200 CD's. The series started in 2005 (first 5 x CD's) and had 30 track per CD. By CD41 the tracks reduced to 28 per CD.  The entire series is a must for the serious doo-wop collector.
