LONNIE LISTON SMITH

A BOX of Lonnie Liston Smith [1973-2012] (22 x CDs)

Lonnie Liston Smith Jr., a celebrated figure in the world of jazz, soul, and funk music, was born on December 28, 1940. His journey into the world of music began in the vibrant city of Richmond, Virginia, where he was born into a family that had a deep connection with music. His father was a member of the gospel group “The Harmonizing Four”, and it was through this early exposure that Smith developed a love for music. Smith’s musical influences were not limited to gospel. He was introduced to the world of jazz through the works of legendary musicians like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. The profound influence of these jazz maestros played a significant role in shaping Smith’s musical style and vision.

Smith’s formal education in music began in high school, where he studied piano, tuba, and trumpet. His passion for music led him to pursue a B.S. in Music Education from Morgan State University in Baltimore. During his time at university, he had the opportunity to perform with contemporaries like Gary Bartz, Grachan Moncur, and Mickey Bass. These experiences enriched his understanding of music and honed his skills as a musician. In 1963, Smith moved to the bustling city of New York to kickstart his professional career. He started performing with top vocalists like Betty Carter and Joe Williams, gaining invaluable experience and exposure. In 1965, he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, a group known for nurturing young jazz musicians and helping them make their mark in the world of music. Smith’s stint with the Jazz Messengers was followed by a two-year engagement with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. These experiences with various musicians and groups helped Smith develop his unique musical style and identity. The year 1968 marked a significant turning point in Smith’s career when he joined Pharoah Sanders’ ensemble.

It was during this time that Smith began to experiment with a unique fusion of jazz, soul, and funk. This experimental phase culminated in the formation of his own band, Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes. The Cosmic Echoes was more than just a band; it was a platform for Smith to express his unique musical vision. The band recorded several albums that are now considered classics in the fusion, smooth jazz, and acid jazz genres. These albums showcased Smith’s ability to blend different musical styles and create a unique sound that was both innovative and captivating.

With a career spanning over four decades, Smith has established himself as one of the most versatile musicians in contemporary music. His rhythmic urgency, harmonic acumen, and composing skills have influenced a generation of young players. His music has transcended boundaries and has inspired musicians across genres.

Today, Lonnie Liston Smith continues to inspire with his timeless music. His music is a testament to his passion, creativity, and dedication to his craft. Despite the changing trends in music, Smith’s music remains relevant and continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. His contribution to the world of music is immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians.

Jack Bruce - Smiles And Grins, Broadcast Sessions 1970-2001 [2024] (4 x CDs)

Jack Bruce’s album “Smiles And Grins, Broadcast Sessions 1970-2001” is a fantastic mix of tunes that really shows off Jack’s musical chops. Released in 2024 by Esoteric Recordings, a part of Cherry Red Records, it’s a great showcase of his talent and lasting impact on music.  Jack, who hailed from Glasgow, was a big name in jazz and rock. He was drawn to these styles and moved to London to play with bands like Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, The Graham Bond Organisation, and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. His career really took off when he teamed up with Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton to form Cream in 1966. Even though Cream didn’t last long, they made a big splash and paved the way for Jack’s solo success.

“Smiles And Grins, Broadcast Sessions 1970-2001” is a treasure trove of Jack’s solo work from over three decades. It’s got a bit of everything - contemporary jazz, classic rock, and free improvisation, all blended together by Jack’s skillful hand. His amazing bass skills and unique bluesy voice are the stars of the show.

This album really shines a light on Jack’s live performances, which many fans think was his strong suit. You can really feel the energy and spontaneity of live music in these tracks, making it a real treat for fans of Jack and live music lovers. The album also highlights the great teamwork between Jack and lyricist Pete Brown. They created many popular songs together, as well as some hidden gems that are revealed in this compilation.

It’s a hefty package with four CDs and two Blu-Ray discs featuring all the radio and TV broadcast sessions. It even comes with an expanded booklet, making it a must-have for fans of the late, great Jack.

“Smiles And Grins, Broadcast Sessions 1970-2001” is a wonderful tribute to Jack Bruce’s legacy. It highlights his range, his unique sound, and his knack for captivating audiences with his live performances. This compilation isn’t just a bunch of songs; it’s a journey through the life and career of one of the most influential figures in jazz and rock. (B)

VA - Jazz Rock, in a Silent Way (A Butterboy Compilation)
CD1+CD2+CD3

Jazz-rock may refer to the loudest, wildest, most electrified fusion bands from the jazz camp, but most often it describes performers coming from the rock side of the equation. Jazz-rock first emerged during the late '60s as an attempt to fuse the visceral power of rock with the musical complexity and improvisational fireworks of jazz. Since rock often emphasized directness and simplicity over virtuosity, jazz-rock generally grew out of the most artistically ambitious rock sub-genres of the late '60s and early '70s: psychedelia, progressive rock, and the singer/songwriter movement. The latter drew from the mellower, more cerebral side of jazz, often employing vocal as well as instrumental improvisation; this school's major figures included Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, and Tim Buckley. Most jazz-rock, however, was played by higher-energy rock ensembles. Some of them were more jam-oriented, borrowing jazz harmonies and instruments for their extended, rock-flavored improvisations (Traffic, Santana). Others recorded jazz-flavored R&B or pop songs that used the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic sensibilities of jazz, but weren't as interested in improvisation or instrumental virtuosity (Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago, Steely Dan). Still others used jazz's complexity to expand rock's musical horizons, not just in terms of instrumental technique but in crafting quirky, challenging, unpredictable compositions (Frank Zappa, the Soft Machine). The major exception was Miles Davis, the first jazz musician since the early R&B era to covet the earthy power of rock & roll and the impact it had on young audiences. Starting with 1970's Bitches Brew, Davis's early-'70s fusion workouts -- greatly inspired by Jimi Hendrix and Sly & the Family Stone -- quickly became some of the funkiest, edgiest, most aggressive jazz-rock ever recorded. While figures like Zappa and Steely Dan continued to record jazz-rock through the '70s, the movement had essentially dissipated by the '80s, as a mellower form of fusion captured its audience (Wikipedia)

In the late 1960s, jazz musicians began mixing the forms and improvisational techniques of jazz with the electric instruments of rock and the rhythms of soul and rhythm and blues. At the same time, some rock artists began adding jazz elements to their music. Fusion has gone on too often include world music and other elements. At its best, fusion music is often considered to be one of the most inventive, original and virtuosic musical genres.
