VA - Steppin' Out, The Roots of Garage Rock 1963-1965 (3 x CDs)

GARAGE ROCK

VA - Steppin' Out, The Roots of Garage Rock 1963-1965 (3 x CDs)

Released by Strawberry, a Cherry Red imprint, this 3-CD set traces the shift from surf, frat rock, and early beat‑group energy into the sharper, more aggressive sound that would soon be recognised as garage rock. The anthology covers 1963 to 1965, a period when regional bands across the United States were recording fast, inexpensive singles that carried more attitude than polish. The sequencing moves from surf‑leaning instrumentals to raw vocal tracks, showing how quickly the style hardened as young musicians pushed their equipment and their studios to the limit.

CD1 leans on the transitional years, where groups like The Chantays, The Kingsmen, The Trashmen, and The Rivieras appear with tracks that still carry the echo of surf and dance‑craze culture. The sound is bright, fast, and built around riffs that could be learned in an afternoon. As the set progresses, the tone shifts. Guitars distort more easily, vocals become rougher, and the rhythm sections tighten into something closer to the garage pulse that would dominate the mid‑sixties.

CD2 highlights the moment when the British Invasion collided with American regional scenes. Bands such as The Standells, The Wailers, The Seeds, and The Misunderstood bring a harder edge, with arrangements shaped by echo, overdrive, and a growing sense of urgency. The songs feel less like teen‑club entertainment and more like declarations of intent.

By CD3, the anthology reaches the threshold of full garage rock. The Brogues, The Gants, The Rationals, The Leaves, The Sonics, and The Thirteenth Floor Elevators deliver performances that define the form: raw vocals, insistent rhythms, and guitars pushed into distortion long before it was fashionable. Across its span, the set captures the moment when American youth culture found a louder, rougher voice and pressed it onto singles that still carry their original charge. (B)

VA - Zulu Stomp!! South Africa Garage Beats!! [2010]

SOUTH AFRICAN

VA - Zulu Stomp!! South Africa Garage Beats!! [2010]

Issued by No Smoke Records in 2010, Zulu Stomp!! South Africa Garage Beats!!uncovers a vibrant corner of 1960s popular music that remained largely hidden from international audiences for decades. Drawing together rare recordings from South Africa's beat, garage, rhythm-and-blues, and pop scenes, the collection captures the excitement of young musicians engaging with the global rock explosion while developing a character all their own.

The energy arrives immediately. Electric guitars jangle and crunch, drums push songs forward with youthful urgency, and harmonies reflect the influence of British beat groups that dominated the decade. Yet these recordings never feel like simple copies of overseas trends. There is a distinct local flavour throughout, shaped by South Africa's unique musical environment and the realities of a country undergoing profound social and political tensions.

One of the set's greatest strengths is its variety. Some tracks burst with dancefloor energy and garage-rock directness, while others lean toward polished pop, soulful rhythm-and-blues, or harmony-rich beat music. The sequencing reveals a scene far more diverse than many listeners might expect, full of musicians experimenting with new sounds while remaining rooted in their own cultural surroundings.

Beyond its historical value, the collection succeeds because the performances themselves remain so engaging. The recordings possess a freshness that survives well beyond their era. Enthusiasm, invention, and a sense of possibility run through every disc, creating the feeling of a scene discovering itself in real time.

More than a compilation of rare tracks, Zulu Stomp!!documents a moment when South African musicians absorbed international influences and transformed them into something distinctive. The result is both an enjoyable listen and an important piece of musical archaeology, revealing a rich chapter in 1960s garage and beat music that deserves a place alongside the better-known stories of London, Liverpool, and Los Angeles. VA - Oh Yeah! The Best of Dunwich Records [1991] + If You're Ready, The Best of Dunwich, Vol 02 [1994] (2 x CDs)

GARAGE ROCK

VA - Oh Yeah! The Best of Dunwich Records [1991] + If You're Ready, The Best of Dunwich, Vol 02 [1994] (2 x CDs)

Together, Oh Yeah! The Best of Dunwich Records [1991] and If You’re Ready, The Best of Dunwich, Vol 02 [1994] form a vivid portrait of one of American garage rock’s most distinctive regional scenes. Dunwich Records, based in Chicago, never had the national infrastructure of the coastal majors, but its impact was outsized, capturing a raw, teenage energy that sat somewhere between British Invasion pop, snarling garage rock, and early psychedelia. Heard as a single body of work, Vol 1 and Vol 2 feel less like separate compilations and more like two sides of the same story. Bots sete were released by Sundazed Music.

The first volume leans into immediacy. These are tracks built on urgency, fuzzed guitars, pounding drums, and vocals that sound as if they were recorded a heartbeat after the idea first formed. There is a sense of local identity running through the material, bands playing for dances, clubs, and radio slots rather than chasing polish. Songs hit hard, make their point, and move on, which is part of their lasting charm.

Volume two broadens the picture. The edges stretch slightly outward, revealing how the Dunwich sound evolved as the late 60s progressed. Psychedelic touches appear more frequently, grooves loosen, and a few performances take greater rhythmic and harmonic risks. What doesn’t change is the directness. Even when arrangements grow more ambitious, the music remains grounded in feel rather than technique.

Heard together, these sets highlight the strength of Dunwich as a label that trusted instinct over refinement. The bands may differ in approach, but they share a commitment to momentum and attitude that makes the listening experience feel cohesive across both volumes. There is no need to separate them mentally, they work best when absorbed as a continuous exploration of a scene finding its voice in real time.

Vol 1 and Vol 2 invite repeated visits rather than definitive conclusions. Each return reveals another rough edge, another great hook, another moment where raw enthusiasm outweighs perfection. As a whole, they stand as a reminder that some of the most enduring music is born from limitation, proximity, and the simple need to be loud, honest, and heard. (B)

VA - The Fab Sixties Vol. 01 - Vol. 20 [2004-2005] (20 x CDs)

60s

VA - The Fab Sixties Vol. 01 - Vol. 20 [2004-2005] (20 x CDs)

Released by Musicbank UK between 2004 and 2005, The Fab Sixties is a sprawling 20CD box set that offers a panoramic sweep of 1960s pop, rock, soul, and psychedelia. With 320 tracks spread evenly across the volumes, it’s less a curated museum piece and more a jukebox explosion, capturing the decade’s sonic diversity with both chart-toppers and deep cuts.

Each disc contains 16 tracks, and while marquee names like Tom Jones, Roy Orbison, The Mamas & The Papas, and The Spencer Davis Group anchor the set, it’s the lesser-known inclusions that give it character. Artists like Pinkerton’s Assorted Colours, Vanity Fare, and Malcolm Roberts, often overlooked in mainstream retrospectives, are given equal billing, reflecting Musicbank’s democratic approach to curation.

Stylistically, the set is a kaleidoscope. You’ll hear British Invasion stompers, Motown soul burners, garage fuzz, folk-pop ballads, and even early psych-rock. Tracks like Love’s “7 & 7 Is”, Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”, and Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” inject grit and edge, while Dinah Washington, Percy Sledge, and Betty Everett bring emotional depth and vocal firepower. The sequencing across volumes is intuitive, often balancing upbeat numbers with slower, reflective pieces, making each disc feel like a standalone listening experience.

The packaging is modest, cardboard sleeves housed in a sturdy outer box, but functional. There’s no elaborate booklet or liner notes, which might disappoint detail-hungry collectors, but the track selection itself acts as a curatorial statement. It’s clear the compilers favored vibe over chronology, and variety over genre purity, resulting in a set that feels spontaneous and alive.

While not marketed as a rarities collection, there are alternate takes, re-recordings, and lesser-known versions peppered throughout, adding texture for seasoned ears. Some tracks appear in subtly different mixes or edits, which may intrigue audiophiles and archivists. The mastering is clean and consistent, though not audiophile grade, this is a set meant for enjoyment, not forensic analysis.

In essence, The Fab Sixties is a generous, no-frills celebration of the decade’s enduring magic. It’s ideal for newcomers seeking a crash course in ’60s sounds and equally rewarding for collectors who appreciate the charm of a well-sequenced, eclectic compilation. It doesn’t aim to be definitive, but it’s undeniably fun, accessible, and packed with personality, much like the era it celebrates. For fans of the era, it’s a generous, no-frills celebration of the decade’s enduring magic (B)
