K's DISCO SPECIAL
DISCO GREATS
VA - The 110 Greatest Disco Songs of All Time (Super Deluxe Edition) [2021] (5 x CD's)
Since the K-tel disco releases (Wednesday, April 6, 2022) are receiving a lot of praise and bringing happy memories for many, I thought you might like to see this one up.
K has pulled these all together for your listening pleasure.
Compiled after exhaustive and extensive research, including the songs which feature most on the many many lists of the best and greatest disco tracks ever made: critics lists, readers lists, online discussion forums, TV countdowns, etc.
I've used all the original mixes from the 70's and early 80's, 7" and 12" versions, no later remixes you often see appear on compilations - basically the best and original versions of each song, at the highest and best sounding quality recent remasters released to date. Many tracks are the original long 12" extended disco mixes, which truly makes for an authentic collection of how the songs sounded in the dance clubs such as the legendary Studio 54.
Most official disco compilations out there contain many of the classics, but also feature a lot of junk too. My goal was to include the very very best of the genre, the cream of the crop, and to add a number of tracks you just never see on compilations due to licensing, music rights issues, etc.
Time to dance yourself dizzy!
K

Remarkable! + Exuberating! (Nice Cover Art Too!) Best Disco Of All Time
ReplyDeleteK... I believe you have triumphantly achieved the goals and criteria you described and set for this. I can recall only one other collection that comes close. What decidedly puts this one over the top is your use of extended versions. Thank goodness you did that! Many of those are very difficult to locate these days. They were the versions we DID NOT hear on radio... only at the Clubs, Discotheques, and Roller Rinks. Being active (the dancing or skating part) with the music and the beat in those environments is really what defined this era. I salute your rejection of the "junk" fillers (I know exactly what you're referring to). There was plenty of "junk" around as there is with any genre, but of course artists/labels/producers and fly-by-nights sought to cash-in on the craze and just piled onto the existing junk glut. That probably helped hasten the era's demise. Every fad has it's day and good tunes. There was some real classics from this time of "Disco", as you have wonderfully captured. Personally I miss this era like I miss many past musical eras. However... there has been nothing since to replace the excitement of being upon on a huge brightly lit dance floor that sequentially changed colors and throbbed to the beat of the music being played aloud. Along with other overhead lighting, mirrored disco balls, and spotlights it was quite a scene... quite a time. I only regret my reeking clothes from cigarette smoke that gave me a terrible headache if I stayed in it too long. I recall many beautiful single females that were drawn to the dancing. Socialization was a part of the music. Well, memories diverted me a little there. You probably could have even made this a CD or two lengthier by including even more (I think) good ones such as Jigsaw's "Sky High" or The Blackbyrds "Walking In Rhythm". Maybe even a classic slow burner like Heatwave's "Always and Forever". The clubs played those, too. You DO have most of the good ones though.
I greatly appreciate your descriptions and wordiness. The music is great... but much better with the details.
This ones a keeper! I'm very thankful to K for "discompiling" it... very thankful to BB for providing the forum.
Thanks for your great insights mrRadio.
DeleteThis is indeed a remarkable collection made better by the efforts of K. Enjoy!
Cheers.
Yes, it was always my goal to include the extended 12” disco mixes, as these are what were danced to in the clubs. I wanted to make it as authentic to the original disco scene as possible and only use the original mixes, and not later ones that have appeared in recent years that you see on many run of the mill ‘supermarket’ compilations.
DeleteFrom your excellent review Mr. Radio, it sounds like I succeeded!
K
Muchas gracias por todo lo que compartes
