SOUL FEMALES
VA - Super Soul Sisters [2016] (3 x CD's)
Out-of-copyright CD compilations can be a bit of a lottery in terms of content and sound quality but this one hits all its targets with great flair.
This set gives you 60 vintage soul recordings from the early sixties, from a wide range of female artists. It mixes up big names (Aretha, Gladys Knight) and the totally obscure (Carrie Grant and the Grandeurs), and generally avoids obvious big hits without picking unknown tracks just for the sake of it. These tunes may not be familiar, but many of them are magnificent and none of them are without something worthy of your attention. Whoever is responsible for the selection really, really knows what they're doing. The opening track, Martha & the Vandellas "I'll Have To Let Him Go", which is jaw-droppingly, house-shakingly brilliant. The sound quality is exemplary, with everything sounding fresh and new, and there are some brief but informative, scene-setting liner notes. (Amazon)
Great tunes! Some well know, some less known and downright obscure.
