FESTIVAL ROCK

VA - The Monterey International Pop Festival [1992] (4 x CDs)

The Monterey International Pop Festival [1992] is a stunning 4-CD set released by Rhino Records, capturing one of the most defining moments in rock history. The original 1967 festival was a groundbreaking event, setting the stage for Woodstock and introducing the world to a new era of counterculture music. This collection brings together the electrifying performances that made Monterey legendary.

There are standout performances from Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, Otis Redding, and The Byrds, among others. Hendrix’s jaw-dropping take on Wild Thing, complete with his iconic guitar-burning finale, is as incendiary as ever. Joplin’s rendition of Ball and Chain is another spine-tingling moment, capturing the raw emotion that would later make her a star. Rare tracks include lesser-known live recordings, such as The Electric Flag’s soulful groove and Buffalo Springfield’s short-lived festival appearance, giving listeners a more complete picture of Monterey’s lineup beyond the major headliners.

The sound quality is impressively restored, allowing the set to feel immersive, while the detailed booklet provides insightful commentary on the festival’s historical significance. Monterey wasn’t just a concert, it was a cultural shift, bringing together rock, soul, and psychedelia in a way that had never been done before.

For those who love tracing the evolution of music through live performances, this set is an essential dive into a festival that changed the landscape forever. (B)

  1. A very important event in music history unfortunately overshadowed by Woodstock. Thanks BB.

    1. Hi lemonflag.
It’s remarkable how much the Monterey International Pop Festival shaped the trajectory of rock, soul, and psychedelia. It introduced legends, broke boundaries, and laid the groundwork for everything that followed, even if Woodstock ended up stealing the spotlight. I have several sets of this monumental concert; they may appear in the future.
      Cheers.

    1. Hi Dr Robert.
I agree, having the full sets is great, but there's something powerful about seeing them spotlighted together like this. It brings fresh attention to performances that deserve the limelight all over again.
      Cheers.

  3. This is a great set - I bought it when it came out and was quite surprised to learn Tommy Smothers not only helped finance the festival but introduced some acts as well. Are there any releases out there that have full sets from everyone who performed. The Woodstock box is up to 25 CDs if I remember correctly.

    1. Hi JWDen,
That’s such a cool bit of history, Tommy Smothers really was more involved in shaping the counterculture than many realize. His support for Monterey adds another layer to its legacy. I have a 9CD set of the Monterey International Pop Festival. It even captures lesser known but historically rich performances from acts like Hugh Masekela, Laura Nyro, and The Electric Flag. It not an official release. Sadly, Monterey hasn’t had quite that level of archival treatment as Woodstock has.
Here is the track list for the 9Cd set of Monterey International Pop Festival -
