VA - Now That's What I Call an Era, The Sound of The Suburbs 1977-1980 [2025] (4 x CDs)
Now That’s What I Call an Era: The Sound of the Suburbs 1977–1980 isn’t just a compilation, it’s like cracking open an old diary filled with punk scrawls, highlighter-streaked mixtapes, and the pulse of youth culture that still refuses to be quiet. Across four discs, it captures the restless energy of the late '70s, when British suburbia was teeming with rebellion and reinvention, and music became a lifeline.
There’s something about the way bands like The Jam, The Undertones, and The Skids sound here that feels urgent, like they were trying to tell you something before the moment passed. These weren’t just musicians—they were suburban prophets with guitars, turning concrete routines into defiant choruses. And the inclusion of lesser-known gems from acts like The Jags or Tonight gives this set a sense of depth, like it’s letting you behind the scenes of a movement that ran on grit as much as glam.
But it wasn’t just the UK shaking things up. The compilation threads in transatlantic rebels like The Ramones, Blondie, DEVO, and Plastic Bertrand, reminding us that these sounds, punk, new wave, pub rock—weren’t confined to one postcode. They bled across borders, found new fans in places like the Netherlands and Australia, and gave rise to global conversations in stereo.
What’s clever here is how it evolves. You start with jagged riffs and punchy lyrics, then slide into synth-laced soundscapes with Japan, Gary Numan, and John Foxx. It’s like watching the suburban sprawl suddenly light up with neon, as post-punk gave way to the icy allure of the new romantic wave. Every track adds another brushstroke to a sprawling mural of youth, angst, creativity, and change.
For someone who lived through those years, even from afar, this compilation doesn’t just jog memories, it rewires them. You hear Echo Beach, and you’re back in a room with sticky floors and crackling speakers. You hear London Calling, and suddenly the world feels bigger, louder, more alive. It’s nostalgia, sure, but it’s also discovery, because somehow there’s still more to uncover in these grooves.
In the end, The Sound of the Suburbs is more than just an era, it’s a vibe. One that says the suburbs weren’t sleepy at all. They were wide awake, guitar in hand, and ready to make some noise. (B)

As someone who lived through this era (but in Oz of course) the music was such a vital part of our lives - thanks for the reminder BB
ReplyDeleteOh, you're so right, doctor! The music of my 10-13 years... Marked for life and beyond! Merci BB.
DeleteHi Dr Rober and Herve,
DeleteThose sounds weren’t just background noise; they were the pulse of a generation. Even from across the globe in Oz, the raw urgency of post-punk and new wave carved its way into the everyday.
Cheers.
Thank you Butterboy.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Done4it.
DeleteCheers.
Thank you, have a nice day.
ReplyDeleteHi Christiaan111.
DeleteYou're welcome. You also enjoy the day ahead.
Cheers.
Great compilation, lots of songs I recognize from my formative years in the Netherlands, but a lot of new discoveries from that period as well. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Cor van Spaendonck.
DeleteThat’s the sweet spot, a blend of nostalgia and fresh finds that rewires the memory circuits. It’s amazing how music can time-travel us.
Cheers.
THANK YOU FROM ME
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Aussie.

Thank you for the travel in this beautiful era. Ah, the 70's...
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, MA696.
DeleteCheers.
BB, first thank you for magnificent compilation. This could be a stupid question, but still. Above you are mentioning few bands: The Carpettes, The Flys, Tonight. I just cannot find them here? Or am I missing something? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi StoneRose.
DeleteYou're living proof that someone actually reads the blurbs before the links, thank you! I’d inadvertently posted the wrong text, but I’ve now updated it to match the set correctly. Really appreciate your sharp eye and thoughtful comment.
Cheers.
I have so many of these songs spread across other comps. If course I will get this and have even more versions of those songs, each comp has a totally different vibe and justifies the many duplicates.
ReplyDeleteHi Bud_e_luv_bomb
DeleteEven when the track list overlaps, each one casts the songs in a different emotional light, some feel rowdy and urgent, others more reflective or nostalgic. It’s like flipping through alternate versions of the same memory. Totally justifies the duplicates, especially when the sequencing and vibe give each track new purpose. Glad this one’s joining the rotation!
Cheers.
What a great comp! Thanks, BB!
ReplyDeleteHi Gummo.
DeleteI agree. The energy, the nostalgia, the sheer breadth of tracks… it’s got that perfect mix of iconic and unexpected.
Cheers.
Never been a fan of the "Now" albums. Maybe it's the cherry picking part. But they always had great music. Not my niche here but the excitement and talent comes roaring thru. Thanks for this great set BB.
ReplyDeleteHi lemonflag.
Delete“Now” albums have always walked that fine line between curation and commercial cherry picking. Even if they’re not your usual groove, there’s no denying the sheer energy and musical firepower in this one. It roars with talent from start to finish. Enjoy!
Cheers.
