SEVENTIES ROCK

VA - Brilliant 70s (A Butterboy Compilation) (6 x CDs)

This is a jukebox, a 6CD Journey Through the Decade That Refused to Sit Still and a love letter to the most restless, radiant decade in rock history. I like to think that across these six discs, Brilliant 70s captures the full emotional and sonic spectrum of the era, from thunderous riffs to whispered confessions, glitter-drenched anthems to barroom soul, cosmic folk to outsider brilliance. Each volume is a standalone experience, but together they form a collector-grade archive of what the 70s truly sounded like, beyond the hits, beneath the surface, and deep in the grooves.

CD1: Hard Truths & Heavy Grooves     Built for volume and velocity. It kicks off with epics like “Child in Time,” “War Pigs,” and “July Morning”, tracks that stretch time, test patience, and reward with pure catharsis. I’ve stacked the deck with riff-heavy monsters like Budgie’s “Parents” and Cactus’ “Let Me Swim,” alongside groove-laden jams from James Gang, Foghat, and Rory Gallagher that pulse with sweat and swagger. Even the shorter cuts, “Immigrant Song,” “In Trance”, carry seismic weight. It’s the sound of denim, distortion, and defiance

CD2: Glam, Glitter & Outsider Cool     This set struts, sneers, and sparkles. From the chart-topping glam of T. Rex and Sweet to the art-damaged brilliance of John Cale and Brian Eno, you’ve captured the full spectrum of 70s theatricality. The inclusion of Barefoot Jerry and Alex Harvey adds regional grit and eccentric charm, while Jobriath and Sparks push the boundaries of camp and complexity. “Rock On” and “Children of the Revolution” close the loop, pop hits with outsider DNA. This disc celebrates the misfits, the glitterati, and the beautifully strange.

CD3: Anthems & Arena Fire     Turn it up, this is the sound of stadiums shaking. yes there are classics here (“Radar Love,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Detroit Rock City”) but also cult anthems like “Rock Candy” and “Ridin’ the Storm Out.” The sequencing is tight, the energy relentless. Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” and The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” bring lyrical depth to the bombast, while Rush and UFO deliver precision and power. You might think of this disc as a masterclass in rock architecture, where the hooks, solos, and choruses are crafted to echo across generations. Every track feels engineered for impact, built to last, and designed to roar from the back row to the front.

CD4: Cosmic Folk & Acid Reflections     You might think of this one as your headphone disc, introspective, mystical, and emotionally resonant. From Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” to Linda Perhacs’ “Chimacum Rain,” it traces a path through the spiritual and spectral corners of 70s folk. Acid-folk rarities like Mark Fry and Simon Finn deepen the atmosphere, while Nick Drake and Tim Buckley hold the emotional center with their timeless melancholy. It’s a set best suited for quiet nights, long walks, and moments that ask for something deeper.

CD5: Southern Swagger & Barroom Soul     This one captures the porch-swing grit and jukebox soul of the South. From Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” to Tony Joe White’s “Polk Salad Annie,” it leans into the soulful, swampy, and road-worn side of 70s rock, where slide guitars meet storytelling and every chorus feels like it was scribbled on a bar napkin. Candi Staton and Hydra add depth and surprise, while Sea Level and Cowboy bring that unmistakable Capricorn groove. It’s a set that smells like bourbon and sounds like truth.

CD6: Left Turns & Lost Legends     This one is the crown jewel of cult brilliance. From Television’s “Marquee Moon” to Emitt Rhodes’ “Live Till You Die,” it’s a celebration of the overlooked and unforgettable, songs that slipped through the cracks but still shine with emotional clarity and sonic invention. I’ve stacked it with artists who never got their due, Rodriguez, Kevin Coyne, Chris Bell, but whose work continues to resonate with crate-diggers, dreamers, and anyone who knows that brilliance doesn’t always come with a spotlight.

Together, these six discs form a definitive portrait of the 70s, bold, beautiful, and brilliant.

Consider this Volume 1... (B)

  3. Thanks BB, another excellent compilation. This will certainly stir up a few memories. The 70's were my "golden years" of musical discovery and adventure. Many of these were artists I grew up on and still listen to today.
