ABBEY LINCOLN

Abbey Lincoln - A BOX of Abbey Lincoln [1957-2007] (20 x CDs)

Abbey Lincoln (born Anna Marie Wooldridge, August 6, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, died August 14, 2010) was an American jazz vocalist, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist. Over a career that spanned more than five decades, she became one of the most distinctive and politically conscious voices in jazz, known for her raw emotional delivery, poetic songwriting, and uncompromising artistic vision.

Lincoln grew up in rural Michigan and later moved to Los Angeles, where she began singing in nightclubs during the early 1950s. Influenced by singers such as Billie Holiday, she initially performed in a traditional jazz and cabaret style. Her early recordings, including Abbey Lincoln’s Affair… A Story of a Girl in Love (1956), showcased her talent but also reflected the commercial expectations placed on female jazz singers at the time.

A turning point in her career came in the late 1950s when she formed a personal and professional partnership with drummer and composer Max Roach. Their collaboration coincided with Lincoln’s growing political awareness and desire for artistic independence. This shift was powerfully expressed on We Insist! Freedom Now Suite (1960), a landmark album that addressed racial injustice and the African American freedom struggle. Lincoln’s vocals on the album, especially her wordless cries and chants, challenged conventional ideas of jazz singing and positioned her as a fearless artistic voice.

Throughout the 1960s, Lincoln continued to redefine herself. Albums such as Straight Ahead (1961) and It’s Magic (1965) combined jazz, blues, and socially conscious lyrics, often written by Lincoln herself. During this period, she also acted in film and television, appearing in productions like Nothing But a Man (1964). Despite this success, her outspoken activism and refusal to conform to industry norms led to periods of reduced recording opportunities.

Lincoln experienced a major artistic resurgence in the 1980s and 1990s. Signing with Verve Records, she released a series of critically acclaimed albums, including The World Is Falling Down (1990), Devil’s Got Your Tongue (1992), and A Turtle’s Dream (1994). These recordings emphasized her songwriting, mature vocal phrasing, and reflective themes of love, loss, identity, and resilience.

In her later years, Abbey Lincoln was widely recognized as a master artist whose influence extended beyond jazz into broader cultural and political realms. She received numerous honors, including being named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2003. By the time of her death in 2010, Lincoln had secured her legacy as a singular figure who transformed jazz singing into a deeply personal and socially engaged art form. (B)

  1. Thanks for this. I have always loved Abbey Lincoln and I do have a few of her CDs. The one with Stan Getz is great. The early stuff I have heard and I like That's Him quite a bit and I need to purchase a copy soon. Next to Billie and Sarah and Nina, she may be my favorite jazz female singer. Her style is so different also. She sings with so much emotion.

    1. Hi Joe,
You’ve summed up her gift beautifully, that emotional honesty is what sets Abbey apart, and it runs right through her catalogue, from the early standards to the later, more reflective work. That’s Him! is a gem, and the Getz collaboration is one of those rare pairings where everything just breathes. Lovely to hear she sits so high on your list alongside Billie, Sarah, and Nina; she absolutely belongs in that company.
      Cheers.

    2. Hi Mike,
You’re in for a rewarding discovery. Abbey’s early records really do carry that spark people talk about, and they’re a great doorway into the depth she grew into later on. Always nice when a new name opens up a whole stretch of listening. And yes, the eternal truth, more music than hours, but that’s part of the joy.
      Cheers.
