NOVELTY
VA - World's Greatest Country Novelty Records [2001] (2 x CDs)
World's Greatest Country Novelty Records, plays out like a reminder that humour has always had a place inside country music, not outside it. What stands out isn’t just the punchlines, it’s how efficiently these songs are built. Most arrive with a clear idea, deliver it cleanly, and move on, but the craft underneath is what keeps them from feeling disposable.
The writing leans on timing and character as much as melody. Even the broadest moments are anchored by performances that treat the material seriously, which gives the humour something solid to land on. Musically, nothing is exaggerated for effect. The arrangements stay within familiar country shapes, which makes the subject matter feel like an extension of the tradition rather than a break from it.
As the set moves along, the sequencing quietly does its work. Short tracks stack up, alternating between obvious novelty and drier, more understated pieces, and that variation keeps the listening from flattening out. Over time, the repetition reveals a pattern, how flexible the form is when it allows space for wit and storytelling to sit side by side.
The collection feels less like a novelty exercise and more like a parallel thread running through country’s history. It doesn’t push for recognition or reevaluation. It simply presents the material as it is and lets the consistency of tone and craft speak for itself. (B)

DeleteCheers.
You've done it again ButterBoy! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Berni,
DeleteAlways great to see you pop up and thank you.
When a set lands the way this one seems to, it makes all the digging, sorting, and stitching feel worthwhile. Glad it hit the mark on your end once again.
Cheers.
Aww come on BB. Two novelty posts over the past few days and neither has Homer & Jethro's 'I'm My Own Grandpa'!! Seriously thanks for this and all your posts
ReplyDeleteHi Mike,
DeleteHa — fair call! A couple of novelty posts in a row and still no Homer & Jethro… that’s the kind of omission they’d probably write a song about themselves. “I’m My Own Grandpa” is a classic bit of twisted family‑tree logic, and it absolutely earns its place in the great novelty canon.
You can find it on my VA -The Bestest Novelty Songs SEEDEE1 +SEEDEE2 + SEEDEE3 (A Butterboy Compilation) Here: https://butterboycompilations.blogspot.com/2019/05/the-bestest-novelty-songs-seedee1.html
Glad you enjoyed the post all the same, always fun to dip into the sillier corners of the collection.
Cheers.
