VA - Deep Cuts in Rock Vol. 06 (A Butterboy Compilation) Once More Again CD1+CD2+CD3

DEEP CUTS

VA - Deep Cuts in Rock Vol. 06 (A Butterboy Compilation) Once More Again CD1+CD2+CD3

Deciding what is a "deep cut" can be a difficult task and the choices often live in a  grey area. For this compilation a deep cut usually refers to Non singles (B-sides are accepted), provided exposure of that song tends to be underplayed and are generally older songs. These deep cuts can also be album cuts that hide amoungst the great hits and B-sides. Those non-singles on the album that are sometimes more loved than the hits. Usually fans who are really into the artist will know some of the tracks but this is probably not true to the casual listener. Deep cuts are truly often overlooked. These are the tracks you are unlikely to hear on the radio, certainly, not often. Every great artist has some great deep cuts in their catalog, some many more than others. Finding that rare gem in an artist's catalog always excites.

Obviously there are hundreds of great tracks that could be included in a Deep Cuts compilation.

Here is Volume 06 of  6 volumes (each 3 x CD sets), mostly obscure rock tracks or tracks that you simply don't hear all that often.  Enjoy!

VA - Califia, The Songs Of Lee Hazlewood [2010]

LEE HAZLEWOOD

VA - Califia, The Songs Of Lee Hazlewood [2010]

A gold mine for the devoted followers of Lee Hazlewood, and a good set compiling chart-minded pop of all stripes, Califia: The Songs of Lee Hazlewood spans the mid-'50s breakthrough of pop/rock that Hazlewood helped spark with his Duane Eddy productions all the way to the early 70's -- a mere dozen years in chronology, but an epoch in popular music. Hazlewood was one of the first and best producers of the rock age, a man whose innovative sounds on Eddy brought a young Phil Spector to Arizona in the late 50's to learn at his feet. Fans of Lee Hazlewood have ensured that nearly all of his solo recordings have been reissued at least once, but his flood of songwriting and production for various labels and artists between the mid 50's and early 70's has never been surveyed like this. Although his only number one hit is not included here (Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'"), the material is uniformly good. Granted, since Hazlewood was usually aiming for the charts with these productions (as opposed to his solo material), it leans toward the pedestrian, but for those who've spent a lot of time listening to pop music of the 60's, it's easy to hear how the innovative productions elevate these songs and performances above the mediocre and to a higher level. The emphasis is on the range of artists he produced, so associated acts like Nancy Sinatra, Sanford Clark (who recorded the only big hit here, 1956's "The Fool"), Duane Eddy, Suzi Jane Hokom, and the Shacklefords are given only two tracks each at the most, with more time accorded for one-shots from artists both famous (Ann-Margret, Dusty Springfield, B.B. King) and not so much (the Darlenes, the Wildcats, Don Cole, and studio-drummer extraordinaire Hal Blaine). (AllMusic Review by John Bush)

VA - A Glass Onion, The Beatles Psychedelic Songbook 1966-72 [2020]

BEATLES COVERED

VA - A Glass Onion, The Beatles Psychedelic Songbook 1966-72 [2020]

Looking Through A Glass Onion assembles these disparate strands into one cohesive package, with the studio day trippers, the cultural pranksters, the genre-benders, the folk club stalwarts and the hair-down-to-his-knees prog-rock brigade all grooving up slowly to the starting line. Though largely forgotten now, Liverpool quartet The Beatles were the toppermost of the poppermost in the Sixties, responsible for some of the biggest-selling singles of all time and a series of ground-breaking albums that dictated musical trends until their next LP emerged. With those albums containing numerous potential hit singles, it was inevitable that producers and groups would wait impatiently for the latest Beatles LP to land in order to rush into the studio and clone a track with the aim of scoring a cheap hit single. That process continued unabated for the rest of the band's career, but the results became more interesting with the arrival of the psychedelic and progressive era, when rock started to take itself more seriously and a more self-respecting, artistic approach was called for. Suddenly the cheap imitations were joined by more adventurous interpretations of Beatles material, including some startling re-imaginings of songs that dated back to the salad days of the Lennon/McCartney writing partnership. The result is the proverbial Magical Mystery Tour, a Fab Four parallel universe, a Looking-Glass world in which 'Strawberry Fields Forever' can be an Elizabethan garden party madrigal or a churning slice of Fudged-up sludge, where a spaced-out Duffy Power takes the lyrics of 'Fixing A Hole' perhaps a little too literally, 'Penny Lane' becomes avant-garde easy listening, the likes of Nick Lowe, Alex Harvey and Ritchie Blackmore try out early identities, and the Walrus was Lol. Containing nearly four hours of music and a 40-page booklet, Looking Through A Glass Onion features 68 tracks from various UK acts, with tons of memorabilia and rare photos as well as the usual verbose smartarse annotation shamelessly passed off as informed musical commentary. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Well, almost all.

I used to be really snooty about Beatles cover versions when I was first getting into them but now I embrace them, and this is an excellent compilation. There are some fantastic interpretations of the Beatles psychedelic stuff. Some really good prog rock/hard rock covers, curiosities, light hearted stuff and everything in between. Including the amazing version of “in my life” by the wonderful Kippington Lodge. (Amazon)

Tony Bennett - Rarities, Outtakes & Other Delights, Vol. 01+02 + Tony Bennett - Colombia Singles Vol. 01 - Vol 06 [2011] (8 xCD's)

TONY BENNETT

Tony Bennett - Rarities, Outtakes & Other Delights, Vol. 01+02 + Tony Bennett - Colombia Singles Vol. 01 - Vol 06 [2011] (8 xCD's)

This selection come from the monumental Anthology "Tony Bennett - The Complete Collection" which contained all 63 of Tony Bennett’s albums in separate facsimile LP jackets together with  3 DVD's, 6 volumes of Bennett’s non-album singles, a previously unreleased CD of his Las Vegas debut from 1964, and 2 CD's of rarities, including Bennett’s first recording, an Army V-Disc of “St. James Infirmary Blues,” making it an absolute treasure trove for Bennett fans and collectors.  Assembled chronologically, Tony Bennett - The Complete Collection presents the breathtaking entirety of Bennett's recorded repertoire, more than a thousand individual songs spanning six decades.

Signed by Columbia's Mitch Miller after a few good words from comedian Bob Hope, Tony Bennett's first studio singles for Columbia Screen were recorded in March 1950. Miller insisted Bennett avoid trying to sound like Frank Sinatra, who was still signed to the label. Instead, Bennett seemed to combine the delivery of Frankie Laine and Dinah Washington. In Bennett's early sides for Columbia, you hear Laine's popular "crying" style leveraged with bel canto phrasing and Washington's searing jukebox delivery. It was a shrewd move by Bennett, though there also seemed to be a push at Columbia to have him record some songs in Italian to retain his ethnic appeal and distinguish him from the more assimilated Sinatra. Throughout the early '50s, Bennett recorded many outstanding and little-known singles that appear in this box. The list includes Once There Lived a Fool, I Won't Cry Anymore, Please My Love and Silly Dreamer. There also were quite a few lousy songs that were done way over the top. But in nearly every case, Bennett was cast as a passionate, sensitive male singer. His image as the boy from the next tenament connected solidly with urban female radio-listeners and record buyers, especially given each song's dramatic, orchestral send-up.   (Amazon)

I have chosen to share two newly curated collections,"Rarities, Outtakes and Other Delights" (2xCD's) and "The Columbia Singles" (6xCDs) available exclusively in this set.

"Rarities, Outtakes and Other Delights" collects rare tracks, previously unreleased outtakes, guest appearances on other artist's albums, soundtrack songs and more beginning with the recently discovered 1946 V-Disc recording of “St. James Infirmary Blues” that “effervescent delight,” which was Tony’s very first known recording. Nestled among the "Rarities" are two tracks from another fabled concert Bennett gave at the Latin Casino in Philadelphia with the Count Basie Orchestra, which was recorded and never released.

"The Columbia Singles" brings together for the first time all of the singles Bennett recorded for Columbia Records, the label he signed with in 1950. Most of them recorded in the early 1950's, "The Columbia Singles" includes the A-sides and B-sides that were not included on individual albums. (Amazon)

VA - Swamp Pop By The Bayou [2014 - 2017] (3 x CD's)

BAYOU SWAMP

VA - Swamp Pop By The Bayou [2014 - 2017] (3 x CD's)

I absolutely love the entire series! Across 22 volumes, encompassing swamp pop, cajun, zydeco, blues, rhythm'n'blues' and soul, seasoned with everything from country and hillbilly to bluegrass, Mississippi hill blues, gospel and boogie-woogie, this series has everything.

Here are another 3 volumes from the series.    PART 4 (Final)

VA - Swamp Pop By The Bayou [2014] (Volume 07)

VA - Swamp Pop by the Bayou [2016] Troubles, Tears & Trains (Volume 13)

VA - Swamp Pop By The Bayou [2017] Let's Get Together Tonight (Volume 17)

Each CD contains 28 tracks which includes a handful of better known performers to provide prospective buyers with a clear indication of the overall style of the album, a slew of rarities ranging from recordings you could never find to complete obscurities you never heard of, several alternative versions, a track or two by unnamed artist, and  an accompanying booklet, containing priceless background information by Ian Saddler who has curated this series so masterfully.  This set is a perfect example of how to put together a themed series of recordings for serious collectors, as well providing a fantastic music album for anyone who simply wants to enjoy a good old fashioned rootsy listening experience.

Some of this material may be obscure but the playing and singing is first rate.

VA - Pillows & Prayers, Cherry Red Records 1981-1984 [2000] (2 x CD's)

INDIE ROCK

VA - Pillows & Prayers, Cherry Red Records 1981-1984 [2000] (2 x CD's)

Pillows & Prayers (subtitled Cherry Red 1982-1983) is a compilation album originally released Christmas 1982, featuring artists on the Cherry Red record label. The record was originally sold at 99 pence (in fact, "pay no more than 99p" was printed on the original sleeve), which helped ensure that the album peaked and remained at number 1 on the UK Indie Chart for five weeks and sold over 120,000 copies.  Back in 1983 the idea of releasing a budget-priced indie album wasn't exactly a novelty - Crass Records had been doing this for several years. But Pillows & Prayers reached out to a different audience and offered cash-strapped teenagers like myself some cheap indie thrills. It was an album I listened to quite a lot; the very fact that it encompassed everything from the gentle acoustic offerings of Marine Girls to the punk poetry of Attila the Stockbroker made it compulsory listening for kids like myself who were keen to explore new musical territory at every opportunity.

In 1984 a sequel, Pillows and Prayers 2, was released in Japan. This time, there was no special price. In 2000 the album was reissued on CD together with volume 1. It has excellent tracks on it by Kevin Hewick, Fantastic Something, Red Box, Eyeless in Gaza, Maurice Deebank and Monochrome Set.

Returning to these albums after a break of almost 40 years it still has an eclectic appeal even if some of the more conventional indie tracks now seem pretty dated. It opens a vivid and eclectic window into the dawn of alternative rock and the death of the U.K. punk scene. (Amazon)

VA - The Sound Of Funk Volume 01 -10 [2000 - 2005] (10 x CD's)

THE SOUND OF FUNK

VA - The Sound Of Funk Volume 01 -10 [2000 - 2005] (10 x CD's)

If you like uncut funk, you'll love this compilation of obscure 70's funk sounds from artists like Leroy & the Drivers, Sons of Slum, and Jake Wade & the Soul Searchers. Funny names aside this is good potent funk, not the self-contained funk band stuff that owned a piece of the charts in the '70s but harder, wicked tracks that would make James Brown and Dyke (of the Blazers) proud. You'll think you're listening to James Brown when "Let the Groove Move You" by Gus "the Groove" Lewis cues and starts spinning; you'll swear Bootsy Collins was playing the hyper basslines, and Lewis has Brown's grunts and groans down pat. Frank Williams must have been schooled at Dyke & the Blazers University because that's who he sounds like on "You Got to Be the Man," spirited horns signifying every line Williams sings. "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" by Robert Moore is straight from the Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Band book of funk and is similar to "Express Yourself."

Women can funk too, as Spanky Wilson proves on "You," a funky riff with some good shout/singing. Other funkers include Dave "Baby" Cortez & the Happy People's "Happy Soul," "The Tramp Part 1" by the Showmen, Inc., "Jan Jan" by Detroit's Fabulous Counts, and "Iron Leg" by Mickey & the Soul Generation. Though most of the artists are unknown, the familiar rhythms, riffs, horn play, use of backing vocals, drum patterns, and basslines aren't. Collectors and casual fans alike can appreciate this one, funk is funk, no matter who's singing it, and a grunt is a grunt is a grunt. (AllMusic Review by Andrew Hamilton)
