The Life & Songs of Emmylou Harris: An All-Star Concert Celebration, eld at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The show boasted a set-list spanning four decades of Harris' iconic catalog. Lucinda Williams sang "Hickory Wind," a 1974 Gram Parsons hit later recorded by Harris, who toured in Parsons' band and recorded several albums with the late singer. Another frequent duet partner, Rodney Crowell sang "You're Still on My Mind" - a song he first heard Harris sing when she was playing coffee shops in Washington back in the early Seventies. Vince Gill and Sheryl Crow teamed for "Two More Bottles of Wine," while Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin and Conor Oberst harmonized on "The Pearl." All were backed by a house band of country greats: Buddy Miller, Don Was, Sam Bush, Audley Freed, Fred Eltringham, Matt Rollings, Greg Leisz and Sara Watkins. Other artists on the bill included Lee Ann Womack, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Chris Coleman, Chris Hillman, Iron & Wine, Alison Krauss, Kris Kristofferson, Daniel Lanois, Martina McBride, the Milk Carton Kids, Herb Pedersen, Shovels & Rope, Mavis Staples, John Starling, Trampled by Turtles, Holly Williams and Emmylou Harris herself, who joined friends on several tunes. When you have been a respected and acclaimed roots artist for as long as Emmylou Harris (her solo major label debut was in 1975 but she was working with Gram Parsons in 1972, she’s won 13 Grammy awards, sold about 15 million albums), it’s likely you’ve made a few friends along the way. So, when it came time for a show focusing on her extensive influence, it probably wasn’t hard for band leader Don Was (who else?) to find a few dozen musicians eager to jump at the invitation.  While some may bemoan yet another of these tributes, especially since both Dr. John and Jerry Garcia ones have appeared in the past month alone, it’s impossible to dismiss the accumulation of talent for this performance, recorded back on Jan. 10, 2015. Even with star power such as Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Vince Gill, Mavis Staples, Allison Krauss, Sheryl Crow and others, there are another few dozen names who Harris has worked with, especially as a harmony vocalist over the decades, who could have attended. A few, like Dolly Parton and Ricky Skaggs are conspicuous in their absence. Regardless, there is plenty on this CD/DVD package to satisfy the most demanding country/folk/singer-songwriter fan.  The presentation is as classy and tasteful as Harris has remained through her nearly 40 albums and endless road work over the decades. There are no flowery introductions, and few artists say much about Harris or their association to her. Rather, they just play the songs - most not composed by Harris - that have defined the singer’s extensive if largely hit-free career. (americansongwriter.com)

An absolutely amazing CD and DVD.  No duds on this, even by lesser-known artists. Hard to pick out anything which soared above the generally great performances but Emmylou with John Starling, Herb Pedersen, Sarah Watkins and Sam Bush doing the haunting Kieran Kane song "When we're long, long gone " was outstanding. But for sheer beauty Emmylou's singing Blackhawk with the amazing Daniel Lanois, the writer of the song, harmonizing and playing lovely guitar just will be on endless repeat for me.

The latest in my 'super deluxe edition' series.

Folk rock is a hybrid music genre that combines the elements of folk and rock music, which arose in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom in the mid-1960s.

In the U.S., folk rock emerged from the folk music revival. Performers such as Bob Dylan and the Byrds - several of whose members had earlier played in folk ensembles - attempted to blend the sounds of rock with their pre-existing folk repertoire,

adopting the use of electric instrumentation and drums in a way previously discouraged in the U.S. folk community. The term "folk rock" was initially used in the U.S. music press in June 1965 to describe the Byrds' music.

The commercial success of the Byrds' cover version of Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and their debut album of the same name, along with Dylan's own recordings with rock instrumentation - on the albums Bringing It All Back Home (1965),

Highway 61 Revisited (1965), and Blonde on Blonde (1966) - encouraged other folk acts, such as Simon & Garfunkel, to use electric backing on their records and new groups, such as Buffalo Springfield, to form.

Dylan's controversial appearance at the Newport Folk Festival on 25 July 1965, where he was backed by an electric band, was also a pivotal moment in the development of the genre.

During the late 1960s in Britain and Europe, a distinct, eclectic British folk rock style was created by Pentangle, Fairport Convention and Alan Stivell. Inspired by British psychedelic folk and the North American style of folk rock,

British folk rock bands began to incorporate elements of traditional British folk music into their repertoire, leading to other variants, including the overtly English folk rock of the Albion Band and Celtic rock.

So, after considerable and extensive online research, plus my own recollections and memories, here is my personal compilation of what I consider to be the 150 best and most important tracks from the original 1960s and 1970s folk rock era.

This 7CD set contains many rare and extremely hard to find tracks, with many featured in their original mono form. Only the original 1960s and 1970s studio mixes are included. No later remixes, 'stereo enhanced' or live versions here!

Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters, with a considerable number of tracks sourced from the original master tapes for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

Across four discs and over five hours of playing time, Breakthrough, Underground Sounds of 1971 cherry-picks 54 top-shelf tracks from British artists pioneering a sound that would quickly evolve into progressive rock. Though there are some familiar names in the track listing -- Jethro Tull, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra -- the compilation is anything but a pedestrian greatest-hits collection. Even songs from better-known names are thoughtfully selected to fit into the overarching flow and mission statement of the compilation, illuminating both the wide variance of sounds happening in a small window of time and how rapidly they were mutating into new forms. While Breakthrough includes some ubiquitous examples of proggy sounds like Yes' FM radio staple "I've Seen All Good People" and Traffic's slow-burning groover "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys," it also goes deeper into rough-edged rock, folksy diversions, sparkly jazz-inflected tunes, and spacier experimentation. The massive track list also includes Hawkwind's blazingly chugging "Master of the Universe," Thin Lizzy's pensive and soul-searching blues rocker "Eire," meditative jamming from John Martyn, complex musicianship from Curved Air, epic hard rock from Uriah Heep and Atomic Rooster, symphonically injected weirdness from Gentle Giant, a fusion of jazz instrumentation and heavy-hitting riffs from Nucleus, and many, many other approaches to the blanket concept of progressive rock. While not many of the artists here rose to the same levels of commercial success as Yes or Jethro Tull, they're not all hyper-obscure footnotes of their time, either. Songs from the Pretty Things, Sandy Denny, Cream's Jack Bruce, Barclay James Harvest, the Pink Fairies, and other notable acts all point to how active and relevant this kind of outward-reaching rock was in 1971. All of the bands here had respectable, full-time careers making music, and Breakthrough highlights the wide spectrum of sounds happening at the time, and just how valuable all these different interpretations of progressive music were as rock began expanding into something new. Though they were little known in the United States (where none of their recordings were ever released), the Sorrows were one of the more interesting acts to rise from the British Beat scene of the 1960s.With their unabashed force, the Sorrows were in a league with the Kinks and the Pretty Things, playing tough, menacing, R&B-infused rock with a suitably resonant vocalist in Don Fardon and a wiry but incisive guitarist in Philip "Pip" Whitcher. They also had a very unusual career trajectory -- their star began to fade in England after their 1965 hit "Take a Heart" ran its course, but they went on to have a second act in Italy, where they became stars singing phonetically. The Sorrows made more than their share of great records between 1963 and 1969, and all of them are included on Pink, Purple, Yellow & Red: The Complete Sorrows, a four-disc set that, as the title suggests, brings together their entire recorded output, as well as some previously unheard material. From a historical standpoint, the sheer depth of this set is welcome, as it tells us all there is to know about the Sorrows, and a bit more. However, as a listening experience, this bogs down the program, with enough chaff to thin out the wheat. The first two discs tell the story well, featuring their run of singles for Pye's Piccadilly label, their debut album (1965's Take a Heart), and the Italian and German-language singles that led to their popularity in Europe. Disc three opens with the band's second LP, 1969's Old Songs New Songs, recorded in Italy near the end of their run and finding them devoting as much time to covering Traffic and Family as their own material, as well as inadvertently proving they were much better playing R&B than embryonic prog rock. The disc is rounded out with Italian single sides and post-Sorrows recordings from the Eggy and Renegade, while disc four has an album-length demo that features the flaws of Old Songs New Songs in magnified form and closes with a potent 11-song recording of a 1980 Sorrows reunion show, which is mostly good enough to overcome its iffy fidelity, but not always. Pink, Purple, Yellow & Red has been assembled with obvious love and care, and the liner notes from David Wells are a complete and well-written history of the band, and the deep dive into the material would be ideal if this band had been more consistent in their latter years. Pink, Purple, Yellow & Red: The Complete Sorrows is a treat for fans obsessed with the group; for those who are less loyal, play the first two discs and save the others for a day you're feeling generous. Best known for their 1965 hit, the brooding garage pop masterpiece 'Take A Heart', Coventry band The Sorrows cut a clutch of similarly vital 45's and the Take A Heart album before front man Don Fardon left in 1966. While Fardon went on to a solo career, The Sorrows regrouped and moved to Italy, where they had a couple of minor hit singles and released the psych-rock album Old Songs, New Songs before breaking up at the end of the decade. While those two distinct phases of the band have been individually anthologized before, Pink Purple Yellow and Red represents the first time that they have been assembled under one roof, and as such stands as the definitive document of The Sorrows' fascinating career. In addition to those pivotal mid-Sixties singles, the package includes the entire "Take A Heart" album in both mono and stereo, the "Old Songs, New Songs" LP and an earlier acetate-only demo album that was scrapped when two members of the band left. The set also features their collaborations with soundtrack maestro Ennio Morricone, their title song to the Italian spy movie Ypotron, a superb acetate-only early 1968 single, spin-off singles by The Eggy and Renegade, a 1980 live show from the reformed band and, in a thrilling new archival find, four previously unissued 1964 recordings with legendary producer Joe Meek. Housed in a clamshell box and including a lavish booklet containing many rare photos and a detailed essay on the band's activities, the set Pink Purple Yellow And Red is an essential purchase for anyone with more than a passing interest in Sixties British pop.
