CRESCENT CITY BOUNCE
VA - Crescent City Bounce, From Blues To R&B In New Orleans (1949 - 1956) [2007]
New Orleans has always been a music city. For many, jazz was its most significant invention, formed at the start of the twentieth century and passed on to the world thereafter. Some point to the city's simultaneous association with blues explain the explosion of rhythm and blues in the 1950s. The impact jazz made over the 20th Century's early decades was huge, while blues progressed unseen in the salons of the red light district. Pianists would gather at dives like Tudlum's Tonk, where rolling the horses - or boogie woogie - was the coming thing. That's the heritage behind Leon T. Gross, known as Archibald. Born in the city on September 14, 1912, he took to the piano early. Serving in India during World War II, he returned to New Orleans. The two-part 'Stack-A-Lee' was recorded in March 1950 and backed by Dave Bartholomew's band, with the notable addition of a banjo. Another session followed in September, with a final four songs cut two years later. He never recorded again - but in the 1960s he enjoyed a long residency at Poodle Patio Club on Bourbon Street. He also partnered Cousin Joe in a two-year stint at the Court of Two Sisters. Cousin Joe reaped the rewards of late fame, touring the US and Europe, entrancing audiences with his humorous but worldly-wise songs. One of the artists Cousin Joe helped along the way was veteran blues pianist Roosevelt Sykes. In a long career, Sykes had recorded for Okeh, Paramount, Decca and twice for Victor, before signing with Regal and United. By 1954, he returned south and cut a couple of sessions for Imperial, including remakes of his 'Sweet Home Chicago' and 'Hush Oh Hush'. All the artists here - Earl Johnson, Earl King, Little Mr Midnight and many, many more are part of that same vibrant tradition. (Amazon)

Thanks for this share of NOLA piano pioneers. As owner of many of the JSP boxes, this is one that I missed. The years (49 - 56) puts the Crescent City Bounce set between Getting Funky (41 - 50) and the Cosimos Matassa Stories (through the early 70s).
ReplyDeleteThanks and Happy holidays!

ReplyDeleteThank you very much for putting together these many compilations. It's wonderful that you keep alive so much of this older and treasured music. Evidently, zippy share had gone south. Here's what you get when I click on one of the links above.
[Hello weary wanderer,

When you get time, could you please repost the 4 CD collection above on another hosting service? Thank you.
