PSYCHEDELIC COUNTRY
VA - Psychedelic Country (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2
Psychedelic Rock found its way into the country genre or was that the other way around. Some artists were more country than Psychedelic, and some artists were more psychedelic than country. Some got it just right and that sound continues through to current bands. The sound is unmistakable when it is done with just enough who use swirling alt-country psychedelia.
Some of my favorite tracks of this genre are from the late sixties and early seventies and includes tracks by Quicksilver Messenger Service, Neil Young, Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Grateful Dead and Country Joe & The Fish. These artists produced some of the finest country-tinged psychedelic-pop/rock records available. Country songs with fuzzed out guitar and spacey pedal-steal noodling. There are a number of new/modern bands that carry on the tradition of Psychedelic Country sounds with the use of 60s flavoured with west coast rock, pastoral sounds, jangly, alt-country with a psychedelic flavor. Sadie's and the Futurebirds are the two best modern bands in this genre at present.
Here are 60 tracks that highlight that country-tinged Psychedelia.

Hi Butterboy's,
ReplyDeleteI have no doubt this is a great comp.
Thanks a lot
Hi Il Commendatore,
DeleteI like the feel of these songs, hope you will enjoy them as well.
Cheers
Very interesting concept for a comp, BB! Looking forward to checking it out, thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gummo.
DeletePsychedelic Country is a very interesting and rewarding experience. I hope you will enjoy the selections.
Cheers
Thank you for this. I've only just discovered your blog, and have been introduced to several artists I didn't know at all. I'm sorry that I never heard Grant McLennan until now, but happy that I can listen to his albums from now on.
ReplyDeleteHi Bionic Grooooove,
DeleteThanks for your comment, I have received a few comments from you and they are appreciated.
Grant McLennan shows up on VA - Jangle Rock Bonanza (A Butterboy Compilation). Glad to hear you like this artist who was a great Australian songwriter. Watch out for more in the future.
Cheers
I like it when I find a comp with some pretty well known songs and others perfectly unknown for me. Most of the time it's well worth a try.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your great blog.
Hi Chocoreve,
DeleteThank you for you kind words.
I often try to make my comps interesting to anyone who seek that blend of old and new. Track 31 Israel Nash Gripka - Rain Plans is wonderful.
Cheers
Very interested in listening to this and many songs here I'm unfamiliar with even though I may have heard of the artist. That Quicksilver Messenger Service song though I know is outstanding and the album it's from (their 1st) is the most cohesive and commercially best of anything they ever did. Thanks.. happy to see another BB comp!
ReplyDeleteHi mrRadio,
DeleteSome of the newer artists continue to make beautiful psychedelic county music that whilst doesn't always match the 60's originators, still gives immense pleasure. I really enjoy the Israel Nash Gripka track Rain Plans (as well as his other output).
I was given the Quicksilver messenger Service by a guy who ran a record store. He gave it to me because he wanted to recruit a new young fan. I immediately took to that wonderful album, I have 4 copies including the original vinyl.I loved the graphic that adorned the cover. Many other great songs there too.
Cheers
Very good mix
ReplyDeleteThanks Joewad.
DeleteCheers
Many thanks, enjoyed pt1. Looking forward to pt2.
ReplyDeleteHi Gill,
DeleteHope you enjoy part 2 as well. Both parts are a fun listen. Thanks for the feedback.
Cheers
Enjoyed this set more than I expected. i tend to listen to artisit that I already know, but this set was full of artists new to me that I really enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for opening my ears a little!
Mike M
Hi Mike,
DeleteYou made my day. As I have said before I often try to place new material in with the known greats. This shows the impact of past generations' on the new generation. I find that very exciting. And the music is uniformly wonderful.
Thank you for your comment.
cheers
boa noite amigo, links off, ansioso para nova postagem, o blog esta de parabens estou visitando com frequencia, fique bem, abraço.
ReplyDeleteHi Unknown,
DeleteI lost many files in the recent accident at KrakenFiles.
New links established, tested and working.
Enjoy.
Cheers
Heh! I was just reading the Feb 2024 UNCUT mag. It has a review of the re-release of 1984's Meat Puppets II (includes 'Lake of Fire') with the brief heading description "Classic psych-country-punk LP gets 30th-anniversary re-release". Did he find that description here?
ReplyDeleteHi John,
DeleteI did the compilation way back in 2019. Who knows...
Cheers.
