SUPERFLY
VA - Superfly Soul 1, 2 & 3 [2003 - 2005] (6 x CD's)
These sets are full of obscure classics both by well-known artists and by genuine obscurities. Very few tracks are merely good, the overall standard is incredibly high and the stuff you don't know (unless you're a serious soul/funk buff,) stands up really well next to the famous tunes. The soul, funk and acid jazz from the 60's and 70's is so fine you can totally forgive the inclusion of a few rather obvious selections (Curtis Mayfield, Gil Scott-Heron, Ann Sexton and Bobby Womack). There is a lot of funk you won't hear on the radio much less find in a dusty record store. The third volume in this hugely successful series delves deeper than ever before into the vaults for another peerless selection of late '60s and 70s nuggets. Few of these artists had hits, and even the ones recognized by soul fans like Maceo & All the King's Men, Pee Wee Ellis, Bobby Womack, Garnet Mimms, Allen Toussaint, a Tina-less Ike Turner, and Big Al Downing -- tend to be on the cultish side. The whole Supefly Soul series does not disappoint, focusing on funky '70s soul. (Amazon)
