VA - 120 Years Of Deutsche Grammophon, 120 Legendary Tracks [2018] (7 x CDs)

Deutsche Grammophon might the oldest record label in the world, with an unprecedented treasure chest of an album catalog, but also a highly vital label to this day. Their iconic yellow label logo is still a brand of quality on levels; the performers, recordings and the sound quality all being world class. Now, the label sets out on an ambitious 120th anniversary entitled DG 120, with a wide-ranging and carefully curated program of activities celebrating their past, present and future.

As part of Deutsche Grammophon's all-inclusive celebrations of its 120-year history, comes an accessible and concise collection of 120 tracks across 7 CDs: Chronologically ordered from the present back to 1898: this collection takes the listener on a journey through time, through a 120 years of classical music recording and interpretation, the perfect guide to Deutsche Grammophon's iconic catalog. An unrivaled roster of brilliant artists shows the artistic range Deutsche Grammophon.

This is a 7 CD disc sampling of Deutsche Grammophon recordings starting in 2017 (CD 1 Track 1) and going back in time (CD 7 track 18) to the voice of Emil Berliner in 1897. This is a great mini history of the label and is an introduction to maybe some new artists/pieces that one may not be familiar with. I believe the idea is for Deutsche Grammophon to give us an overview of some of the recordings that they have made through all the years and by necessity, the vast majority of selections are single movements of a work.  (Amazon)

  5. I don't love classical music, but I do NOT find it to be instantly annoying in the same way reggae, and the Grateful Dead are. Come, take a trip with me into my brain where classical music is this huge beautiful, but well defended castle, and I'm just one stupid idiot trying to get in. Being able to read music and play a very small assortment of instruments is, in my mind, the metaphoric equivalent of getting past the crocodile-filled moat surrounding the classical music castle in my imagination. I've yet to get inside the actual structure.

Sometimes I listen to classical music on the radio in my car while I'm doing errands, and I'll really enjoy a large segment. The problem occurs when I hear a piece I like and don't have time to sit in a parking lot for 20 damned minutes waiting for an announcer to tell me its title & who composed it. If that info is presented en route I miss it for two reasons: my short term memory is bullshit, and I'm not pulling over to write anything down. I mean, I'll remember the composer, maybe, just not that it was a 1967 recording of the first movement of their 4th piano concerto, al dente - that's too much jibber-jabber while I'm driving. Anyways...

    Thanks.

Hopefully there is something in this lot that you will love.
There are many popular rock songs are based on classical music. (Sounds like a new compilation).

  6. Thanks for the classic Classical, BB! I picked up the Karajan set you posted on TZ a few years ago (except discs 91 thru 103. I had to play catch up and some of the links had expired). I am not a regular listener, but sometimes I'll just drop a playlist in my player and listen to a whole side. It's a big mood changer.

    Thanks again!

  10. Oh my! Guess I wasn't around the first time, so thanks so much for the refresh. As much as I love music, I haven't a creative bone in my body. How someone can sit down and pull this much beauty out of thin air and get it down on paper is (excuse the expression) inconceivable to me. This is going to keep me smiling for quite a while!
