B-SIDES
VA - Besides the Other B-Sides (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3+CD4+CD5+CD6
You don’t hear the term B-side much these days. Back in the day (as they say), a B-side was a song placed on the back of a single with the A-side – the song intended to be a hit on the radio, on the front. Even as vinyl has made a comeback, the art of a double-sided single has been lost outside of collector circles. Still, it’s a rich part of rock and roll history. Some of the greatest recordings of all time began their life as B-sides. It’s a lost art form. Thus, some fan favorites may have gotten lost in the shuffle. (cleveland.com)
Now that physical singles are rarely released, many would assume that B-Sides have been rendered redundant, but that seems to be missing the point. B-Sides have never just been about making sure the back of a 45 isn’t blank. In many cases, they offer a deeper glimpse into an artist’s depths and what they are working on beyond the glare of the singles charts. They can be an unexpected treat, prognostic glance at the future direction of an artist, or a track that goes on to trump its flipside, big brother, no matter what, they are always interesting. Their glory days may be behind them, but with more and more bands releasing B-Side bolstered reissues and bumper gift boxes chocked with charming little 45s, the B-Side will forever linger on, like the unknown glory on the dark side of the moon.
Whilst there are a lot of B-sides don't see the light of day after their initial release. Here are a bunch of quality B-Sides that all deserve another listen. Some are too good to forget. Very, very few of these selections have been placed on Albums but were still true B-sides. So, besides the other B-sides that that may appear in additional volumes of B-sides, I hope you will enjoy this selection.

Il Commendatore.
DeleteSome great music to be found on B sides. This can obviously be expanded further. Who knows how much further in the future.
Cheers.
great, thanks
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, bluero54.
DeleteCheers.
Terrific! Many thanks, Paul
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul.
DeleteEnjoy revisiting these.
Cheers.
They were also a great way for some artists, groups or managers to put on a song, written by them, regardless of quality, so they could cop a royalty equal to that of the hit side
ReplyDeleteThe "B"-Side was often a coverted "Extra" when I was out buying singles, often to be completist!
ReplyDeleteThe advent of CD Bonus + Extra Tracks changed this view........Good or bad or indeifferent.....Progress!?
What I need is reference to the original "A"-Side......its my brain....(it will get a lot of them but...)!
Cheers
Stephen
Four Seasons - Silence Is Golden 1964 -Lissted twice CD3 (44) CD4 (71)

Stephen
Hi Stephen,
DeleteOoops! I know.
Just delete one, although it still fits in the scheme of things, and you get a great song twice.
Cheers.
CD5
Delete98 Central Line We Chose Love 6:18
100 Central Line We Choose Love 4:40
...But its not! The second one is something else...'"Life Is In The Groove"!?
Cheers
Stephen
It was said of the Beatles the didn't want fans to pay twice for a song. So singles and their B-sides were the only way to get those songs. It may have been different in the states. Thanks for this set.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, lemonflag.
DeleteThey were a good bunch of lads.
Cheers.
... and by all means thank you and K for these great comps!!!...
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, pattirules.
DeleteCheers.
suggestion ...just replace one of those doubles with silver springs by fleetwood mac!!! one of the 80s most famous US b side
ReplyDeleteHi pattirules.
DeleteA good suggestion but I tried to avoid cross over with other B side sets already posted and that track had already appeared.
Cheers.
Early in the Morning was an A side in England
ReplyDeleteHi Dave,
DeleteFor some reason my notes I had suggested "Early in the Morning" was released as the B-side of Buddy Holly's single "Love's Made a Fool of You" in 1959. "Love's Made a Fool of You" was the A-side and received more attention at the time. That is why I included it. I probably should have included "Everyday the 1957, flipside of Peggy Sue.
Cheers.
