The Jamaican pop music industry has always been prolific, ever-shifting, and built independently from the ground up for the most part, and per capita, no place on earth produces more records, remixes, dubs, do-overs, and left-field releases than Jamaica. This two-disc set collects some of the big island hits from 1961 and includes tracks by early Jamaican pop stars like Laurel Aitken, Derrick Morgan, Eric Morris, the Folkes Brothers, Clancy Eccles, Don Drummond, and Byron Lee & the Dragonaires, among many others.

As with the other releases in this excellent series, this two CD set highlights the music that Jamaicans were buying in their droves throughout the year. By 1961, locally produced music dominated the local radio charts, as reflected in the selection here.

The styles range from slow ballads to rocking shuffle blues, courtesy of the island's biggest stars of the period. The sound quality is brilliant, the selection superbly researched, and the presentation is second to none, with the booklet featuring fascinating imagery and extremely informative notes.

While other companies have subsequently attempted to repeat the theme, this groundbreaking range remains by far the best of the lot and cannot be recommended highly enough.

The story of how Jamaica's modern recording business developed from being a virtual one-man operation into a global industry has often been told, but never without with a degree of subjectivity. Until now… The result is a truly fascinating, informative, and most importantly, hugely enjoyable listening experience. (AMG review by Steve Leggett)
