BANNED BY THE BBC

VA -This Record Is Not to Be Broadcast Vol. 01 & Vol 2 [2008-2010] (5 x CDs)

Based on the Theme, this is a hilarious boxset of three CD's that talks more about RADIO BBC than the records. Some of these recordings are so harmless that you will have to read the comments about Why these were banned. It is nonetheless a fascinating look into the bureaucratic workings of the government body that controlled British broadcasting for so long. Both sets were released on the Fantastic Voyage label.

VA - This Record Is Not to Be Broadcast, 75 Records Banned by the BBC 1931-1957 [2008] Box set: This is a fascinating and entertaining collection of songs that were deemed unsuitable for broadcasting by the BBC for various reasons, such as political, religious, sexual, or moral content. The box set contains three CDs with 75 songs from 1931 to 1957, covering a wide range of genres and styles, from jazz and blues to pop and rock and roll. The songs are arranged chronologically, giving a sense of the historical and cultural context of the time. The collection also features a booklet with detailed notes by Spencer Leigh, a music historian and broadcaster, who explains the reasons behind each ban and provides some background information on the artists and the songs. The collection is a treasure trove of musical gems that reveal the changing attitudes and tastes of the public and the authorities, as well as the creativity and talent of the artists who pushed the boundaries of music and expression. This is a must-have for any music lover who wants to explore the hidden history of British music in the mid-20th century.

VA -This Record Is Not to Be Broadcast Vol. 02, 50 More Records Banned by the BBC [2010]: This is a follow up to the previous collection, featuring 50 more songs that were banned by the BBC for various reasons, such as political, religious, sexual, or moral content. The follow up contains two CDs actually with 51 songs from 1931 to 1962, extending the time period and adding more diversity and variety to the selection. The songs are also arranged chronologically, giving a sense of the historical and cultural context of the time. The collection also features a booklet with detailed notes by Spencer Leigh, a music historian and broadcaster, who explains the reasons behind each ban and provides some background information on the artists and the songs. The collection is a great complement to the previous one, offering more insight and enjoyment into the history and culture of British music in the mid-20th century. This is a great addition to any music collection that wants to discover more of the banned and controversial songs that shaped the musical landscape of Britain. (B)

  4. "Beep Beep" by the Playmates?? From 1958? How on earth?? I surmise it's because the singer pushes his car to 110 mph in pursuit of his muse, and that could encourage drag racing. Rully? I mean, just listen to "Beep Beep"! No one who bought it had a drivers license ... I sure didn't, I was 8. What a stunning example of period moral panic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMNtnr0LKYk

    1. Hi Jonathan F. King.
      Moral panic, indeed.
Just imagine placing today's society into the 1958 environment.
      Cheers.

  5. In Australia the ABC banned some of the songs from Kiss Me Kate from airplay too. Too ribald! Thanks for sharing these amazing albums BB.

Some of these are so saccharine compared to today.
