The Shangri-Las - The Complete Studio Recordings (Super Deluxe Edition) [2023] (11 x CDs)

The Shangri-Las were an American girl group of the 1960s, consisting of Mary Weiss, Elizabeth "Betty" Weiss, Marguerite "Marge" Ganser, and Mary Ann Ganser. Between 1964 and 1966 several hit pop songs of theirs documented teen tragedies and melodramas.

They continue to be known for their hits "Remember (Walking in the Sand)", "Give Him a Great Big Kiss", and in particular, "Leader of the Pack" which went to #1 in the US in late 1964.

The Shangri-Las' "tough girl" persona set them apart from other girl groups. Having grown up in a rough neighborhood of Queens, New York, they were less demure than their contemporaries. Rumors about supposed escapades have since become legend; for example, the story that Mary Weiss attracted the attention of the FBI for transporting a firearm across state lines. In her defense, she said someone tried to break into her hotel room one night and for protection she bought a pistol. Whatever truth the stories may have, they were believed by fans in the 1960s, and they helped cement the group's bad-girl reputation. According to Weiss, that persona helped fend off advances from musicians on tours.

The Shangri-Las continued to chart with fairly successful U.S. hit records, specializing in adolescent themes such as alienation, loneliness, abandonment, and premature death. Singles included "Give Him a Great Big Kiss", "Out in the Streets", "Give Us Your Blessings", the top ten hit "I Can Never Go Home Anymore", "Long Live Our Love" (a rare example of a song dedicated to the men at the time fighting overseas in Vietnam), "He Cried" and the spoken-word "Past, Present, and Future", featuring a musical backdrop inspired by Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". Noteworthy B-sides included "Heaven Only Knows", "The Train from Kansas City", "Dressed in Black" and "Paradise" (written by Harry Nilsson).

Among titles in favorites lists is "I Can Never Go Home Anymore", the story of a girl who leaves home for a boy; her pride keeps her from returning to her mother who "grew so lonely in the end/the angels picked her for their friend". Lines from "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" include "When I say I'm in love, you best believe I'm in love, L-U-V", and "Well I hear he's bad." "Hmm, he's good-bad, but he's not evil." "Past, Present, and Future" has been said to be about rape, something Weiss disagrees with. She has said it is about "teenage angst," heartbreak, and "being hurt and angsty and not wanting anyone near you."

The streetwise image of the Shangri-Las - initially a promotional device for "Leader of the Pack" - contrasted with other "girl groups" of the 1960s, and they were cited as an influence by 1970s punk rock-era acts such as the New York Dolls, Ramones and Blondie; the latter covered "Out in the Streets" twice. The Go-Go's have been performing "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" live ever since their early punk rock days in Los Angeles clubs.

The Shangri-Las - Leader of the Pack (2016 Japanese Mini LP CD Paper Sleeve Expanded Edition) (Red Bird) (1965)

Leader of the Pack is the 1965 debut album by girl group the Shangri-Las. The album was produced to capitalize on the group's breakthrough hits "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" and "Leader of the Pack" which had been co-written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. After the album's focal track went to number one, The Shangri-Las' style and image had evolved into something tougher and earthier.

Much of the material for Leader of the Pack such as "Bull Dog" and "It's Easier to Cry" emphasized their new style. Other songs on the album include cover versions of "Maybe" originally by The Chantels with Betty Weiss on lead vocals, along with "Shout" by The Isley Brothers and "Twist and Shout" by the Top Notes. Also on the album is "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" which The Shangri-Las would release as a single later in the year. Although the group had scored two major hits, the album only charted at 109 on the U.S. albums chart.

The album was rated the 49th best album of the 1960s by Pitchfork.

It had never been released on CD until recently, when it was finally issued for the very first time in Japan only in 2016 as a Mini LP CD Paper Sleeve Expanded Edition.

There are a number of album tracks featured here which had never been released on CD previously, despite the many official compilations released up until this point. Fully remastered, it now contains 7 bonus tracks.

The Shangri-Las - Shangri-Las '65 (2017 Japanese Mini LP CD Paper Sleeve Expanded Edition) (Red Bird) (1965)

Shangri-Las-65! is the second album by the Shangri-Las. Released in late 1965, it serves as the follow-up album to Leader of the Pack, which was released earlier in the year.

The original pressing of the album contains the hit singles "Out in the Streets" and "Give Us Your Blessings". The second pressing includes the hit "I Can Never Go Home Anymore", and excludes the album track "The Dum Dum Ditty". The second pressing was later repackaged and re-released as I Can Never Go Home Anymore.

It had never been released on CD until recently, when it was finally issued for the very first time in Japan only in 2017 as a Mini LP CD Paper Sleeve Expanded Edition.  Fully remastered, it now contains 7 bonus tracks.

The Shangri-Las - Golden Hits of the Shangri-Las (2021, 55th Anniversary Expanded Mono Remaster) (Mercury) (1966)

This is the third and final Shangri-Las album, a compilation originally released in 1966 on the Mercury label. It has never been released on CD.

This is my own compilation using all the original mono mixes from the highest quality digital sources for the 12 track album,

plus adding another 18 bonus tracks for a 30 track 2021 55th anniversary expanded edition, with a 79:37 CD running time.

The Red Bird Story (4CD) (1991)

FANTASTIC 4CD set originally released in 1991 featuring the very best offerings from The Shangri-Las, The Ad-Libs,

The Dixie Cups, The Jelly Beans and more on New York's Red Bird label founded in 1964.

The label's first release was "Chapel of Love" by the Dixie Cups, which quickly reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, a feat matched later that year by the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack".

Eleven of the first 30 singles released by Red Bird reached the Top Forty.
