Country music, also known as country and western (or simply country), and hillbilly music, is a genre of popular music that originated in the southern United States in the early 1920s. It takes its roots from genres such as folk music (especially Appalachian folk and Western music) and blues. Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms, folk lyrics, and harmonies mostly accompanied by string instruments such as banjos, electric and acoustic guitars, steel guitars (such as pedal steels and dobro’s), and fiddles as well as harmonicas. Country music has developed a clear reputation for having some of the saddest songs of any genre. If it weren't for sad songs, country music may not be the same. From losing a lover, a friend, a mother, or a beloved family pet, there’s something on this list that has grabbed us all emotionally. Through these songs we relive memories of heartache or death, with emotions we can all relate to whether sweet and bitter. From the earliest hillbilly music and through to the current generation of country warblers' country songs can still break our hearts.
