12 BAR BLUES

VA - 12 Bar Blues (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3+CD4.

The 12-bar blues, a chord progression that is central to the genre of blues, has had a profound impact on popular music. Its popularity can be attributed to its simplicity and versatility. It serves as the backbone of countless blues, rock, and jazz compositions, and is found in various genres of music, not just Blues.

The reason for its lasting appeal lies in its structure. The 12-bar blues progression provides a clear sense of balance and allows other instruments time to develop longer melodies. This repetitive pattern, despite its simplicity, offers a canvas for compelling storytelling and emotional expression. The blues progression has a distinctive form in lyrics, phrase, chord structure, and duration. In its basic form, it is predominantly based on the I, IV, and V chords of a key.

The origins of the 12-bar blues can be traced back to African musical traditions brought to America through slavery. These traditions emphasized repetitive patterns and call-and-response vocals, which laid the foundation for the structure of the 12-bar blues. The blues originated from a combination of work songs, spirituals, and early southern country music. It was first written down by W.C. Handy, an African American composer and band leader.

The first published piece of music in the 12-bar blues style was “Memphis Blues” in 1912, a composition by W.C. Handy. However, the Beatles’ instrumental “12-Bar Original”, recorded in 1965, is one of the earliest examples of a 12-bar blues track. Its commercial release in 1996 underscores the enduring influence of the 12-bar blues. (B)

Here are 80 12 bar blues tracks that we all know. For some I have used cover versions oof th original with delightful differences and for others I have use two versions of the same song to see how these songs were interpreted from different artists. Also, I have kept the tracks chronological order based on their released dates so you can travel through the changes of time. The 12-bar blues form has stood the test of time. Its simplicity and emotional depth resonate with listeners across generations. Enjoy!
