Jack Bruce’s album “Smiles And Grins, Broadcast Sessions 1970-2001” is a fantastic mix of tunes that really shows off Jack’s musical chops. Released in 2024 by Esoteric Recordings, a part of Cherry Red Records, it’s a great showcase of his talent and lasting impact on music. Jack, who hailed from Glasgow, was a big name in jazz and rock. He was drawn to these styles and moved to London to play with bands like Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, The Graham Bond Organisation, and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. His career really took off when he teamed up with Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton to form Cream in 1966. Even though Cream didn’t last long, they made a big splash and paved the way for Jack’s solo success.
“Smiles And Grins, Broadcast Sessions 1970-2001” is a treasure trove of Jack’s solo work from over three decades. It’s got a bit of everything - contemporary jazz, classic rock, and free improvisation, all blended together by Jack’s skillful hand. His amazing bass skills and unique bluesy voice are the stars of the show.
This album really shines a light on Jack’s live performances, which many fans think was his strong suit. You can really feel the energy and spontaneity of live music in these tracks, making it a real treat for fans of Jack and live music lovers. The album also highlights the great teamwork between Jack and lyricist Pete Brown. They created many popular songs together, as well as some hidden gems that are revealed in this compilation.
It’s a hefty package with four CDs and two Blu-Ray discs featuring all the radio and TV broadcast sessions. It even comes with an expanded booklet, making it a must-have for fans of the late, great Jack.
“Smiles And Grins, Broadcast Sessions 1970-2001” is a wonderful tribute to Jack Bruce’s legacy. It highlights his range, his unique sound, and his knack for captivating audiences with his live performances. This compilation isn’t just a bunch of songs; it’s a journey through the life and career of one of the most influential figures in jazz and rock. (B)
