PHIL COLLINS

Phil Collins - Play Well With Others [2018] (4 x CDs)

Philip David Charles Collins is a renowned English musician, born in London, England, on January 30, 1951, known for his drumming, singing, songwriting, record producing, and acting abilities. His rise to stardom in the music industry occurred during the 1970s and ’80s, attributed to his work with the rock band Genesis and his successful solo pop career. At the tender age of five, Collins received a drum set as a gift and honed his skills by practicing along with music from the radio and television. He also ventured into acting and singing, with notable performances in a 1964 stage production of Oliver! and minor roles in several films, including the Beatles’ comedy musical A Hard Day’s Night (1964).

“Play Well With Others,” is a box set released in 2018 and stands as a testament to Phil Collins’ musical versatility and genius. The box set’s first three discs document Collins’ contributions to various musicians’ albums, while the fourth disc features live performances. This unique approach to documenting Collins’ history puts the spotlight on Collins the drummer, not Collins the singer/songwriter, highlighting his supporting work for other artists over his own albums.

The set includes only a few tracks that Collins recorded under his own name, and he doesn’t even take the lead for a vocal until the last song of the second disc. By emphasizing Collins’ often overlooked instrumental prowess, “Play Well With Others” allows listeners to momentarily forget his reign as one of the premier pop stars of the ‘80s.

The box set guides listeners through Collins’ musical evolution, from his early days with the post-psych/proto-prog sound of his pre-Genesis band Flaming Youth, through his time with Genesis, and his work with other artists. It showcases his mastery of odd meters, drastic dynamic shifts, and complex polyrhythms, proving him to be on par with any other first-generation prog drummer.

“Play Well With Others” also brings to light Collins’ jazzy side, with fusion tracks by British jazz-rockers Brand X, with whom Collins spent an extended sabbatical in the latter half of the ‘70s. Collins was present for the transition from straight-up prog to idiosyncratic art rock, as evidenced by his presence on groundbreaking tracks by Brian Eno, John Cale, and Peter Gabriel.

In conclusion, “Play Well With Others” is a testament to Phil Collins’ musical versatility and his ability to collaborate effectively with other artists. It provides a unique perspective on his career, focusing on his instrumental prowess and his work as a supporting musician. This is a great box set and is a a celebration of his spirit of collaboration. It is must-have for any Phil Collins fans, or anyone interested in the evolution of rock and pop music from the 1970s to the present day.(B)

  1. This is a very good box set....however, had they asked me, I would have changed the track list to Disc 1: Genesis, Disc 2: Brand X. Disc 3: Various contributions and Disc 4: His solo work. Throw in a bonus disc for the live stuff.
But no one is asking for my input, are they? ;P
