READER'S POLL #05 VA - Reader's Poll, Hidden Gems (A Butterboy Compilation) (15 x CDs)

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

READER'S POLL #05

VA - Reader's Poll, Hidden Gems (A Butterboy Compilation) (15 x CDs)

Hidden gems in music are like rare treasures waiting to be unearthed, each with the potential to resonate deeply with the listener. These are not just songs, but emotional experiences that transport us through time, connect us with others, and reveal new facets of ourselves. This recent compilation of Hidden Gems is a vibrant celebration of this phenomenon, and it's thanks to the heartfelt contributions of passionate music lovers.

Among the gems gathered here, each track tells a unique story. Some take us on journeys of healing and hope. For instance, a listener once found solace in an uplifting track during one of life’s darkest chapters. The lyrics spoke directly to their soul, offering strength and a reminder that better days lay ahead. This is the power of a hidden gem, it becomes a personal anthem, a lifeline that pulls us through.

Others bring joy by capturing unforgettable moments. A road trip anthem, for example, might evoke memories of freedom, laughter, and the open road. A single song can bottle up those fleeting moments of happiness, playing them back for us whenever we need to feel alive again. Similarly, a gem might transport someone back to their wedding day, with the melody of their first dance intertwined forever with feelings of love and unity.

Hidden gems also have the incredible power to inspire and connect. Imagine discovering a little-known artist on a rainy afternoon, only to find their music becomes your sanctuary during trying times. Or consider the story of a young musician who, after hearing a jazz legend like John Coltrane for the first time, is compelled to pick up an instrument and embark on their own creative path. Gems like these don’t just entertain, they ignite something within us.

And perhaps the most touching aspect of hidden gems is the way they bridge generations and cultures. Folk songs passed down through families, carry with them not just melodies but legacies. They connect us to our roots and keep traditions alive, forging bonds that transcend time.

To all who participated in uncovering this treasure chest of musical gold, thank you. Your selections are not just tracks on a playlist, they are stories, emotions, and connections brought to life. Together, we’ve created something extraordinary: a celebration of music’s timeless ability to move and inspire. Here’s to the hidden gems that enrich our lives, one note at a time.

This compilation of 15 CDs contains 318 tracks offering almost 24 hrs. of play time. But what truly matters is the music itself and the experience it offers. The tracks are arranged chronologically by year, providing a thoughtful structure for the compilation. This arrangement allows listeners to follow the evolution of musical history and witness its transformation over time.

Be proud of all your choices and dedication and passion sharing the music you cherish. Now, we all have the privilege of experiencing the sounds as you hear them. (B)

  1. BB this is fabulous!
I really thought I would know a lot. But this list is amazing, so much new music. I am going to try me best to listen to the whole thing. Even the 2000s.
    Thanks so much for this.
Could you tell us the missing 4? (I did read a comment elsewhere that someone sent in some impossible tracks).

  2. Congratulations BB and contributors on putting this together, I intended to send my chosen tracks to you but alas I ended up in hospital having some unexpected surgery and missed the deadline. Just in case you're interested, my three tracks were going to be:
    1) Michael Head & The Strands - Something Like You (1994)
    2) Nic Jones - Ten Thousand Miles (1977)
    3) Worker Bees (a.k.a. Ups & Downs) - Zero (2011)

    1. AC sorry to hear about your surgery, hope you recover soon. I liked the first 2 songs, very nice. No comment on #3. But isn't that the fun o sharing like this. Take care.

    2. Thanks mate, recovery is ticking along nicely as the ol' body stitches itself back together. Yes, Zero is a bit different than the other two choices, I wanted to pay tribute to a mid '80s independent Brisbane band named Ups and Downs who had great singles like This Perfect Crime, The Living Kind, and In the Shadows, I think the Stone Roses might have been listening. Zero was the track they made after getting back together three decades later. Here's some audio for In the Shadows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1LZlmVfs24

  5. I go to sleep by The Pretenders listed twice on CD 5. Is that correct or a blip? Great song mind you.

Problem from resorting the tracks sequence.
      Cheers.

  8. I'm starting listening to this collection... what an incredible job you've done BB.. thanks again! And the choice of ranking the songs by years was the best one in my opinion

  9. Great idea, great work!
Such a wide range of musical styles was to be expected, but it still feels strange to actually hear it.
The best thing about Hidden Gems: finding one.

    My finds this time:
    Hadda Brooks, Velocette, Polkadot Cadaver.

Whoever chose Hound Dog Man, great move!

(I'd be ready for Hidden Gems round 2)

  10. That brilliant idea of yours BB, proved the good taste and the music knowledge of our e-community, plus the fact that more than 10 people can participate in sharing the treasures of their souls!
As Canned Heat are singing "Let's Work Together"!

  11. Thanksthanksthanks Should ever go with "original VS rare/unexpected cover", let me know: I have some particular suggestions, e.g. "Swing low, sweet chariot" by S.Rollins with R.Harley at Montreux Jazz festival 70s.
    ciao!

  20. This is an overwhelming compilation, so infinite thanks to everyone involved and especially to you, BB, for all your hard work on this magical 24 hours trip (an almost unbelievable amount of time and commitment!). Your personal, poignant and profound introductory text fits in so well and speaks to me from the heart. A big thank you for that too. Best with the highest respect, TC

  21. Merci et bravo pour le travail colossal. On a de quoi s'occuper et c'est génial.

  22. To say "Thank you" is not sufficient to acknowledge your efforts but others can speak better than me in that regard. It's wonderful to see my choices included and to know I now have a further 315 songs to sample. Despite my collection ranging over the thousands there are so many new to me here and I shall indulge over the coming weeks.

  23. Mr. Butterboy did an excellent job. The idea alone deserves due credit. As I always say, “Music connects people all over the world”. No matter what genre you prefer, if you are open enough to expand your musical horizons, you will enter a world of wonder. Enjoy Butterboy's hard work and a journey through all styles of music. Next time I'll send along HQ Audio Rips. with best regards to all of you, from Vienna Austria, Michael

  27. I've only managed to skim through some of this, but it's an awesome collection. An inspired idea, BB, and aren't we all awesome for submitting these gems? There are weeks worth of leads here for mr to hunt down. Well done everybody - this is what the internet is for!

  28. Wouahhhh. Now will have to listen slowly, time after time, so much to discover. Sorted by year is a good idea... Question: how to start? ;-) Thanks a lot for all

  29. Thanks for all these unknown gems, Butterboy, but I have remarks on all my 3 contributions.
164 Tall Dwarfs - Nothing's Going to Happen 3:54 1985 isn't the long version (#2) from the LP "That's the short and long of it" from 1985 that I proposed, but the short version (#1) from the 12" Three songs from 1981. The long version is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbu9bEJwtn8
    298 Mina - Se Telefonando 2:58 2015 isn't from 2015 but from 1966.
305 Womack Sisters - Darling 2:46 2017. I don't know where you got this version from (it's only available on You Tube), but it sounds terrible. Here's a better sound (and view): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tueRAV0fGlg

  30. BTW: 305 is a cover of Darling, come back home (1963) by The Valentinos (The Lovers), a group with their uncles The Womack Brothers

  35. Hi Butter:
It's truly exciting that in an age where blogs are "out of fashion," you're an example for all other blogs, the good atmosphere you've managed to create, and the participation of many friends you've made over the years, among whom I'm proud to be one.
I will listen carefully to this "Holy Bible."
Greetings from Spain, from your friend
    Jose

  37. Butterboy was so kind to send me a download file with the 3 hidden gems I had sent him. 298 Mina is the same as on CD15, but you could replace 164 Tall Dwarfs and 305 Womack Sisters with the tracks in this link: https://pixeldrain.com/u/96VBgNQP

  38. I have made a personal Top 2222. I only put the first 22 songs in the correct order. If a song a song is on 99, 100 or 101 doesn't matter so much to me, so for the other 2.200 songs I came up with something clever, if I may say so myself. If you want to know how I did it, like to see my complete list or think "That seems like something I could do, making my own Top 2222": send an email to rob.kopp@xs4all.nl and I will gladly send you the explanation and a PDF-file and Excel-spreadsheet with the complete list.

  39. Many thanks for the time you have taken to put this together.
Look forward to listening to them all over the coming weeks

  40. Just now getting to this - and it really is incredible! What a team everyone here is. I didn't get a chance to add anything, but there were some very unexpected goodies here (Silver Cloud!) that I'm VERY happy with this and everyone's efforts.
