VA - Born Free, The 12th German Jazz Festival 1970 [2015] (9 x CDs)

This 9-CD box set from B.Free Records is a monumental archival release documenting the full breadth of the 12th German Jazz Festival, held in Frankfurt across three concerts in March 1970. Original pressings of the 1970 vinyl were limited to only a few thousand copies, and MPS stopped producing the title after that first run. That scarcity has turned surviving copies, especially those with the original gatefold sleeve intact, into prized collectibles, often fetching premium prices on the resale market. While a 2015 CD reissue and a later limited‑edition vinyl revival made the music more accessible to new ears, many purists still favor the warmth and authenticity of the first‑generation LP.

This expanded 2015 edition runs over 10 hours and features previously unreleased material, restored audio, and a 32-page booklet packed with rare photos and artist credits. It’s one of the deepest dives into European free jazz ever committed to disc.

The set opens with the German Jazz Festival Big Band, a powerhouse ensemble featuring Albert Mangelsdorff, Heinz Sauer, Volker Kriegel, and Manfred Schoof. Their pieces, like “Intoxication” and “Jazzminers Dance in Frankfurt”, set the tone: bold, brassy, and unafraid to swing into abstraction. From there, the box unfolds like a sonic map of the avant-garde. Dave Pike’s vibraphone-led quartet delivers psychedelic grooves; Wolfgang Dauner’s Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart experiments with ring modulators and clavichords; and Karin Krog’s haunting vocals float over Pike’s compositions.

Phil Woods’ European Rhythm Machine brings fierce energy on “Freedom Jazz Dance,” while Klaus Doldinger’s quartet and the Frederic Rabold Crew explore modal and fusion textures. The deeper discs dive into pure improvisation: Just Music, Limbus 4, and Free Jazz Group Wiesbaden stretch time and tone, while Peter Brötzmann’s infamous “Fuck de Boere” erupts with political rage.

Later CDs spotlight Alexander von Schlippenbach, Pierre Favre, and Joachim Kühn, each pushing the envelope of form and freedom. Gunter Hampel’s group closes the set with a suite of chamber-jazz compositions that feel ritualistic and deeply personal.

This isn’t just a reissue, it’s a resurrection. For collectors, it’s rare and essential. For historians, it’s a complete snapshot of a scene in full bloom. And for listeners, it’s a thrilling, sometimes overwhelming ride through jazz’s outer limits. (B)

Music weaves itself into the fabric of our emotions, dances through the corridors of memory, and whispers to the soul of who we are. Sharing these stories deepens the connection, turning the experience into something timeless and profound.

    1. Hi Unknown,
Great to hear that this compilation is up your ally.
I have posted some Blumenkraft label material in the past. You can check out the archive to seek albums from this label. I am sure Kraut! Demons! Kraut! - German Psychedelic Underground 1968 - 1974 was posted.
      Cheers.
