John Lodge’s passing at 82 leaves a quiet ache in the hearts of those who found wonder in his music. As bassist and vocalist for The Moody Blues, Lodge didn’t just play, he philosophized in melody. His basslines were thoughtful, his harmonies expansive, and his lyrics often reached for something beyond the stars.

His solo work, especially Natural Avenue, revealed a man attuned to the emotional weight of goodbye and the clarity of purpose. In “Intro to Children of Rock ’n’ Roll,” he wrote: “You have to know where you're going / Before you say goodbye” “You have to know what you're asking / Before you ask why” lines that feel like a farewell letter to life itself.

Lodge’s greatest achievement wasn’t just induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or penning hits like “Ride My See-Saw.” It was his ability to make listeners feel seen, heard, and understood. He gave sound to introspection, rhythm to wonder, and voice to the questions we carry.

Now, as silence settles where his voice once rang, we remember a man who didn’t just perform, he guided. John Lodge built galaxies in song, and somewhere, they’re still echoing. (B)
