Lonnie Johnson - The Original Guitar Wizard [2004] (4 x CDs)

Lonnie Johnson (1899–1970) was one of the most influential early guitarists in American music and moves through this set the same way he moved through his career, without drawing hard lines between styles. Born in New Orleans in 1899, he worked across blues, jazz, and popular song, shaping a guitar style built on single-note lines and clear, melodic phrasing. His recordings from the 1920s and 1930s, including sessions with Eddie Lang, show how early that approach was formed.

Issued in 2004 by Proper Records, this four-CD set gathers that material into a steady, unbroken flow. The guitar never dominates, but it is always present, moving around the vocal with a light, controlled touch. Notes are placed carefully, giving even the shorter tracks a sense of space.

As the discs unfold, the balance remains consistent. Vocals stay direct, almost conversational, while the guitar shifts between support and quiet lead. Other instruments appear, but they tend to frame the performance rather than redirect it.

What settles in over time is the continuity. Different sessions, slightly different settings, but the same tone and timing carry through. Left to play, the set feels less like a compilation and more like a single voice held in place, measured, clear, and never needing to reach beyond its own line. (B)
