Bonnie Tyler was born on 8 June 1951 in Skewen, Wales, and her career grew from small club stages to international charts through the force of a voice that carried grain, power and emotional weight. Her early singles on RCA, including Lost in France in 1976 and More Than a Lover in 1977, introduced a singer who could move between soft phrasing and full dramatic lift. It was It’s a Heartache in 1977 that changed her reach. The single appeared on the album Natural Force in 1978 and travelled across Europe and the United States, becoming one of the decade’s most recognisable radio songs.

Her work in the early eighties shifted again when she began recording with Jim Steinman. Faster Than the Speed of Night in 1983 placed her voice inside a widescreen production style that suited its scale. Total Eclipse of the Heart became the album’s centrepiece, a single that moved across charts in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia. Holding Out for a Hero followed in 1984, first appearing on the Footloose soundtrack and later on her album Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire in 1986. These recordings shaped her reputation as a singer who could carry theatrical intensity without losing human detail.

Tyler continued releasing albums through the nineties and two thousands, including Bitterblue in 1991 on Hansa and Simply Believe in 2004 on Stick Music. Her later work, such as Rocks and Honey in 2013 and The Best Is Yet to Come in 2021, showed a performer who remained committed to melody, phrasing and emotional clarity. She represented the United Kingdom at Eurovision in 2013, adding another chapter to a career built on resilience and presence.

Bonnie Tyler passed away on 8 July 2026 in Faro, Portugal, after complications from emergency intestinal surgery. She was seventy-five. Her catalogue remains a record of strength, vulnerability and unmistakable tone, carried across formats, labels and decades. Her loss is felt deeply, yet her recordings continue to hold the same force they carried when first released. (B)
